Ships Sail into New York City for Fleet Week Celebration

NEW YORK (NNS) -- Six U.S. Navy ships, three U.S. Coast Guard cutters and 12 coalition ships from around the world sailed into New York harbor to commence Fleet Week New York 2012, May 23.

Approximately 6,000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen descended upon the city to celebrate the 25th Fleet Week New York, taking place May 23-30.

This year the sea services join together to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Fleet Week has been New York City's celebration of the sea services since 1984. It is an unparalleled opportunity for citizens of New York and the surrounding area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see, firsthand, the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.

"I'm glad to be here with the Wasp to commemorate the War of 1812 and to get to be home and see my family since I haven't seen them in quite some time," said Aviation Support Equipment Technician 2nd Class Angel Garcia, from Bronx, N.Y. and currently stationed aboard USS Wasp (LHD 1).

Navy ships participating in this year's commemoration include multipurpose amphibious assault ship Wasp, the Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) and USS Roosevelt (DDG 80).

Wasp and Roosevelt will dock in Manhattan at Piers 90 and 92. All other U.S. Navy ships will dock at Sullivan's Homeport Pier in Staten Island. The U.S. Coast Guard signature ship, Eagle, will dock at Pier 90 in Manhattan, while two additional Coast Guard cutters, along with several coalition ships will dock in Brooklyn at the Port Authority Piers.

Public visitations of the U.S. Navy ships will commence May 24 and conclude May 29. Manhattan ships at Piers 90 and 92, as well as Staten Island ships located at the Homeport Pier, are open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coalition ships located at Port Authority Piers in Brooklyn are open Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 26-28, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Throughout the week, a number of exhibits and displays will show off the technology of the maritime services to include air shows and ground demonstrations by members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard team.

"Being a part of Fleet Week is awesome. Last year I was in Afghanistan on the bird to go over there, and this year I'm here at Fleet Week in New York City, back in my hometown," said Lance Corporal Dennis Cox, from Manhattan, N.Y., currently attached to the Ground Combat Element from1st Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment. "I joined the Marine Corps because of 9/11. That kind of sealed the deal for me. If I could have, I would have joined right then and there, but I had to wait to graduate high school first."

This year, Fleet Week New York is one of the signature events around the country commemorating OpSail 2012, the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Star-Spangled Banner. The commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 is a salute to all Sailors and Marines who fought gallantly in that conflict, all who served in the nation's conflicts since then, and who are defending freedom around the world today.

From USS Carl Vinson Public Affairs

At Sea (NNS) -- Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17, guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), and guided missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97) are scheduled to return to their homeport of San Diego, May 23.

USS Carl Vinson serves as the flagship for Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, which also includes Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1.

"The successful completion of this deployment is a testament to the high quality of men and women who volunteer to serve in our Navy," said Rear Adm. Thomas Shannon, commander of CSG 1. "Whether supporting U.S. and coalition forces on the ground in Afghanistan; preventing piracy; or taking on our Navy's tradition of ambassadorship during overseas port visits to Hong Kong, Dubai, India and Australia, our strike group Sailors represented our country with great distinction and honor."

"This was the ship's second deployment in 18 months, and the crew performed superbly," said Vinson's Commanding Officer Capt. Kent D. Whalen. "I could not be more proud of my crew."

CVW-17 includes the "Sunliners" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 81, the "Stingers" of VFA-113, the "Redcocks" of VFA-22, the "Fists of the Fleet" of VFA-25, the "Garudas" of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 134, the "Tiger Tails" of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125, the "Rawhides" of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 and the "Red Lions" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 15.

Throughout the deployment, CSG-1 completed the following:

- Flew 1,085 Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) missions, totaling 6,600 total flight hours. This included close air support missions, support for coalition ground forces, airborne electronic warfare missions and airborne command and control missions.
- Delivered 7,283 pounds of ordnance and expended 1,717 rounds of 20mm ammunition in support of OEF.
- Conducted exercises with coalition countries and other nations, including Singapore, Britain, India
and Australia.
- 818 Sailors volunteered for 37 community relations projects and professional exchanges while
enjoying port visits in Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, India and Australia.
- Carl Vinson earned the 2011 Commander Naval Air Forces Battle Efficiency (Battle "E") award for West Coast-based aircraft carriers.
- Carl Vinson hosted newsman Dan Rather for a three-day visit as the subject of a segment for the television news magazine "Dan Rather Reports." Halsey hosted Oliver North as part of the television news program "War Stories with Oliver North."
- Carl Vinson sailed more than 55,600 nautical miles.
- 676 Sailors earned their Enlisted Surface and Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist qualifications.

UNITAS Pacific 53-12 Participants Prepare for Advanced Phase

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Frank J. Pikul, Southern Seas 2012 Public Affairs

PISCO, Peru (NNS) -- Commanding officers of the Chilean, Colombian, Mexican, Peruvian and U.S. Navy ships participating in UNITAS Pacific (PAC) gathered aboard Peruvian frigate Mariategui (FM 54) for a mid-exercise brief, May 19.

The agenda included debriefs of the work-up phase of UNITAS PAC and an exchange of plans for the upcoming "exercise scenario phase" (ESP).

"We have worked at the basic level of operations with our partner nations such as gunnery exercises and we have worked with each nation's helicopters to come to a common procedural understanding," said Cmdr. Peter T. Mirisola, commanding officer of Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36).

During the "hot wash" debrief, each nation discussed improving communication procedures and enhancing interoperability.

"When you bring the different capabilities with different navies, it is difficult at first, but we eventually overcame those problems and operated successfully at sea," said Mirisola.

The ESP began May 21 and includes maritime interdiction operations, anti-submarine warfare scenarios, counter-piracy operations, and other training scenarios.

"It is the next level of complexity for us and our partner nation navies to work as a cohesive unit and communicate better with each other in order to accomplish our mission," said Mirisola. "The crew is well prepared for these exercises and they get more proficient as they complete more operations at sea."

Underwood is representing the U.S. Navy during the 53rd iteration of UNITAS 2012 and is deployed to Central and South America and the Caribbean in support of Southern Seas 2012.

U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. 4th Fleet supports USSOUTHCOM joint and combined full-spectrum military operations by providing principally sea-based, forward presence to ensure freedom of maneuver in the maritime domain, to foster and sustain cooperative relationships with international partners and to fully exploit the sea as maneuver space in order to enhance regional security and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Caribbean, Central and South American regions.

Navy Commissions Amphibious Transport Dock Ship San Diego

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy will commission the newest San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship San Diego during a 10 a.m. PDT ceremony Saturday, May 19, 2012, in San Diego, Calif.

The ship is named for the city of San Diego, principal homeport of the Pacific fleet, and honors the people of "America's Finest City" and its leaders for their continuous support of the military.

Three previous ships have carried the name San Diego -- the armored cruiser named in 1914, the World War II-era cruiser commissioned in 1942 and the combat stores ship commissioned in 1969.

Adm. Mark Ferguson, vice chief of naval operations, will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Additional remarks will be given by Jerry Sanders, mayor, City of San Diego; Sean J. Stackley, assistant secretary of the Navy (research, development and acquisition); Vice Adm. Richard W. Hunt, commander Naval Surface Forces; Maj. Gen. Ronald Bailey, commanding general, 1st Marine Division; and Rear Adm. David H. Lewis, program executive officer - ships.

Linda Winter, wife of Former Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter, is serving as the ship's sponsor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, she will give the order to "man our ship and bring her to life!"

Designated as LPD 22, the USS San Diego is the sixth amphibious transport dock ship in the San Antonio class. The principal mission of LPD 17 San Antonio-class ships is to deploy combat and support elements of Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. With the capability of transporting and debarking air cushion or conventional landing craft and augmented by helicopters or MV-22 vertical take-off and landing aircraft, these ships support amphibious assault, special operations, and expeditionary warfare missions. The USS San Diego will provide improved warfighting capabilities including an advanced command-and-control suite, increased lift capability in vehicle and cargo-carrying capacity, and advanced ship survivability features.

Cmdr. Kevin P. Meyers, a native of Baltimore, is the commanding officer of the ship, leading a crew of approximately 377 officers and enlisted personnel. Upon commissioning, the USS San Diego will be homeported in San Diego, Calif., as a part of the U.S. Third Fleet.

Built by Huntington Ingalls Industries in Pascagoula, Miss., the USS San Diego is 684 feet in length, has an overall beam of 105 feet, a navigational draft of 23 feet, displaces about 24,900 tons and is capable of embarking a landing force of about 800 Marines. Four turbo-charged diesel engines power the ship to sustained speeds in excess of 22 knots.

Strange English OM Voice Loop in 6950 kHz

As originally reported on the UDXF newsgroup, a strange English OM voice loop has popped up, first on 6990 kHz USB then yesterday moved to 6950 kHz USB. The loop is sending the following continuously: "She had your dark suit in greasy wash water all year. Don't ask me to carry an oily rag like that. They used an aggressive policeman to flag thoughtless motorists." Is this a DoD or DARPA related transmission?

You just have to love shortwave for the wonderful and strange things you will hear. Now we need Yosemite Sam to make an appearance.

CSG8 Successfully Completes COMPTUEX

USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, At Sea (NNS) -- Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8 successfully completed a Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPTUEX) May 17, off the East Coast of the United States from Virginia to Florida, in preparation for their scheduled combat deployment later this year.

The exercise, which started April 24, was conducted by a training team led by Commander, Strike Force Training Atlantic (CSFTL). COMPTUEX ensured the collective forces of the Carrier Strike Group attained major combat operations certification and are ready for deployment.

"This three weeks of intense at-sea training is hands-down the most effective way to train our team of combatant ships, the carrier, the air wing, and strike group staff for sustained operations while deployed to 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility," said Rear Adm. Michael Manazir, commander, Carrier Strike Group 8. "The trainers of Strike Force Training Atlantic and their supporting cast have assembled a curriculum which stresses ships and their crews to the high-end of warfighting capabilities and refines non-kinetic missions such as maritime interception operations and theater security cooperation. After completing COMPTUEX, I am more confident than ever in our ability to go anywhere in the world, anytime, and successfully conduct the full range of missions that we may be directed to accomplish."

The strike group was assessed on their ability to execute the nation's maritime strategy. The task scenarios provided Sailors with experience for deployment as they operated together through strike warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions. The scenario also involved events focused on irregular warfare, counter-piracy, counters proliferation and associated maritime interdiction operations.

Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group consists of aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Farragut (DDG 99), and USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109), the guided-missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66), Carrier Air Wing 7, Destroyer Squadron 28, and Spanish Navy frigate Braz de Leso (F 103).

Independent deployers the guided-missile destroyers USS Laboon (DDG 58), USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79), the guided-missile frigates USS Klakring (FFG 42) and USS Carr (FFG 52), dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), and the Brazilian Navy frigate BNS Independencia (F 44) also participated.

CONR to enforce TFR during G-8 Summit

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) Command Region fighters will be protecting the skies during the G-8 Summit at Camp David, Md.

Air Force fighter jets will be on alert during the event May 18-19 enforcing the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zone during the summit.

Lt. Gen. Sid Clarke, Continental U.S. NORAD Region (CONR) commander, explained how the Continental U.S. NORAD Region provides air defense for the protection of the continental United States, to include special events such as this year's G-8 Summit.

"CONR is charged with defending the airspace over the continental United States every minute of the day, and we routinely provide enhanced air defense at special events like this year’s G-8 Summit," General Clarke said. "Pilots in the Camp David area are used to seeing Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) zones over Camp David, but what makes the G-8 Summit a little different is that the Federal Aviation Administration’s TFR is larger than normal. It’s very important that the general aviation community remember to check their Notice to Airmen and fly informed!”

In preparation for the G-8 Summit, the FAA will be imposing a TFR over Camp David. All aviators are advised to check the Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS) as required with a special focus on TFRs.

The Continental U.S. NORAD Region has enforced TFR’s throughout the United States since the beginning of Operation Noble Eagle, the command's response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. CONR activities will have minimal impact on aircraft in the area and are not in response to any specific threat.

CONR to fly air defense exercise in preparation for NATO Summit

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Continental U.S. North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) Command Region fighters will be active prior to the NATO Summit preparing to protect the skies around Chicago.

Exercise Amalgam Virgo 12-NATO, a NORAD air defense exercise, will be held Friday in the greater Chicago area to allow interagency partners an opportunity to work collaboratively in this environment.

The Amalgam Virgo exercise comprises a series of training flights held in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard, the NATO Summit Joint Operations Center and the Continental U.S. NORAD Region's Eastern Air Defense Sector.

Residents in the Chicago area can expect flights to begin around 9 a.m. (CST), Friday, and continue for approximately two hours. Exercise Amalgam Virgo is designed to hone NORAD’s intercept and identification operations. Civil Air Patrol aircraft, Air National Guard C-21 aircraft, Air Force KC-135 tanker, Air Force F-16s, and a Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphin helicopter will participate in the exercise.

"Providing the air defense for special security events like this year’s NATO Summit is a part of our day-to-day mission," said Lt. Gen. Sid Clarke, Continental U.S. NORAD Region commander. "Our interagency partnerships are a key component to the air defense shield for events like this and the Amalgam Virgo exercise is an excellent opportunity for us to hone our air defense skills with all our interagency partners.”

These exercises are carefully planned and closely controlled to ensure the Continental U.S. NORAD Region's rapid response capability. The Continental U.S. NORAD Region has conducted exercise flights of this nature throughout the U.S. since the start of Operation Noble Eagle, the command's response to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

During the NATO Summit, Air Force fighter jets will be on alert to enforce the Federal Aviation Administration's Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zone during the summit. Officials advise all aviators to check the Notices to Airmen (NOTAMS) as required with a special focus on TFRs.

New York National Guard Homeland Response Force validation training lifts off

By Army National Guard Spc. J.p. Lawrence, New York National Guard

ORISKANY, N.Y. -- About 1,000 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen worked with New York Guard volunteers at the New York State Preparedness Center here as part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency II Homeland Response Force validation training, May 15.

The FEMA II Homeland Response Force - which is a robust, specialized, rapid-response task force made up of National Guard Soldiers and Airmen to reinforce first responders in times of disaster - included members of the New Jersey, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands National Guards. The HRF

The organization supports civil authorities in response to Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) or Hazardous Material incidents that requiring the evacuation, decontamination and medical triage of casualties.

During the validation Soldiers from the New York Army National Guard‘s 1156th Engineer Company were given one simple task: move a concrete cube from point A to point B.

The only problem was that the concrete cube weighed two tons, and they had to move it 75 feet around obstacles while using only rollers, wood beams and pry bars.

Moving the cube was an exercise meant to build communications skills within the Soldiers in the event they are called to rescue civilians from collapsed buildings save lives in the real world.

“Pretend it’s your mother under that block,” said Army Sgt. Ivan Martinez, team leader of the Search and Extraction Team. “[We’ve got to] rescue her.”

The Soldiers dug their pry bars into the ground. “On my command - Go, go, go,” he said to his team as they attempted to move the cube.

The cube rose into the air. Soldiers placed black metal cylinders in front of it and pushed. The cube moved down a hasty path Soldiers made out of wood beams. The cube – all two tons of it – glided on the rollers in spurts.

Watching this whole affair is Army Sgt. 1st Class Lee Given, a trainer with the Joint Interagency Training and Education Center.

Given recently trained another HRF team in Oregon. Components of the HRF have trained for similar missions in recent years, and aiding civil authorities, as the HRF does, is part of the National Guard’s traditional role.

The team Givens watches is composed of both Soldiers and Airmen. Air Force Master Sgt. Hector Caro, member of the 105th Airlift Wing, is responsible for triage with this Search and Extraction Team.

“It’s good for us to get together and see how each other works,” Caro said, who would evaluate the wounded in a real-life disaster.

The team moved the two-ton cube through a narrow concrete tunnel, and Army Pfc. Neseer Carter, breathed a sigh of relief as the cube completed the 75-foot course.

But the exercise is not over. Given smiles and makes a bet. He places a wooden beam vertically on top of the cube. Lower the cube, currently on wooden support beams, to the ground, he said, and if this beam doesn’t fall, he’ll do pushups.

The team takes the bet.

“Everybody’s got to lift together,” said Army Sgt. John Grace, member of the 1156th Engineer Company. “All we’re doing is taking the weight off the rollers. We’re going to lift this thing down soft and gentle.”

At very last second, just as the cube came to rest upon the ground, the wooden beam perched on top of the cube wobbles and falls to the ground.

The team groaned - they lost bet, now they have to do pushups.

Givens laughed and joined in. The cube exercise is mostly for team building and helping Soldiers think outside the box, the instructor said, but the lessons from this will help the team gain the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters or terrorist-related incidents.

“That’s our goal,” Givens says, “to be able to go into an operation and execute the mission.”

The team rose from their pushups. The training has just begun.

“You got to keep your troops motivated,” Martinez says. “You never know when you have to use the skills here in the real world.”

Taylor Participates in Operation Ocean Shield

USS TAYLOR, At Sea (NNS) -- Over the past several weeks, guided-missile frigate USS Taylor (FFG 50) and its visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) team, have actively patrolled the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) and provided security assistance to several merchant vessels transiting through the Gulf of Aden region.

Taylor, with embarked Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 48 Detachment 9, is assigned to Commander, NATO Task Force 508 Operation Ocean Shield.

This Operation is NATO's counter-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden and India Ocean.

"Ocean Shield is a clear demonstration of the alliance's capability in the maritime field, and its flexibility in meeting the variety of challenges posed in today's security environment," said Cmdr. J. R. Hill, Taylor's commanding officer. "As part of the NATO Task Force Taylor complements the European Union, Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), and independent nations' units tackling piracy in the region."

Taylor's mission is to patrol the waters of the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and Somali Basin, and investigate suspicious maritime activity. Additionally, the ship supports merchant vessels requiring assistance while transiting the IRTC and other regional waterways. Taylor also monitors commercial merchant shipping and convoys and provides security overwatch.

"Most vessels we have encountered are legitimate fishing or trading and are not involved with piracy operations, but the data collected helps provide information for pattern of life analysis and evidence to compare between boardings that may help classify a dhow as a pirate vessel more clearly during a boarding," said Lt. Michael Modeer, Taylor's senior VBSS Officer.

Piracy and maritime crime are a significant concern to the international community, contributing nations, non-government and commercial organizations. Taylor has conducted numerous maritime security assist visit (MSAV) boardings in support of NATO's counter-piracy efforts.

As the deployment continues, Taylor expects to remain vigilant on patrol, providing the maritime presence and security necessary to support counter-piracy efforts throughout the region.

B-1 aircrews make history by employing laser JDAMS

by Airman 1st Class Hrair H. Palyan, 28th Bomb Wing Public Affairs

ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. (AFNS) -- B-1 Lancer aircrews from here employed laser Joint Direct Attack Munitions against moving targets during a weapon system evaluation program exercise May 14 through 16.

Aircrews from the 37th Bomb Squadron and 34th BS employed six GBU-54 laser JDAMs against targets on the Utah Test and Training Range near Hill Air Force Base, Utah, as part of the Air Force's air to ground WSEP, known as Combat Hammer.

"Combat Hammer provided us with the unique opportunity to employ weapons in real-world scenarios and evaluate the weapon and aircraft-to-weapon interface in great detail due to the telemetry kits on the weapons," said Lt. Col. Stuart Newberry, the 37th BS commander. "This data, when coupled with scenarios usually unavailable to us except in combat scenarios, provides us with an opportunity to validate and refine our tactics, techniques and procedures ... as well as adjust training plans and combat standards."

The goal of the exercise was to evaluate the effectiveness, maintainability, suitability and accuracy of precision guided munitions and other advanced air to ground weapons. The entire process of weapons handling was evaluated from start to finish during Combat Hammer.

Maj. Michael Ballard, the lead bomber evaluator for Combat Hammer, said this time around, WSEP focused on the cradle-to-grave evaluation for the LJDAM.

The LJDAM is a 500-pound, dual-mode guided weapon. It's equipped with a laser seeker, which aids in its ability to demonstrate outstanding accuracy and can be employed to engage both stationary and moving targets on the ground.

"We didn't do anything different because of WSEP - our main focus is always on safe and reliable loading first time, every time," said Master Sgt. Joshua Klotz, the 28th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron NCO in charge of loading. "We qualify monthly on all B-1 bomber assigned munitions and are required to complete proficiency loading every month."

Leadership was mindful in the selection process of aircrews for Combat Hammer, ensuring that Airmen who had less experience would be teamed up with seasoned aviators.

"We try to provide a mix of experience during Combat Hammer sorties," Newberry said. "All crewmembers were fully qualified, but it's important to allow younger aviators -- those without a lot of experience -- the opportunity to build confidence in their skills and weapon system while they are supervised by more experienced aircrew."

Newberry noted that aircrews have been limited in training opportunities with the LJDAM unless they are participating in a Combat Hammer scenario.

"It was gratifying to be part of the first operational release," said Capt. Charles Armstrong, a 37th BS B-1 weapon systems operator and a mission leader for Combat Hammer. "We're learning a lot from these missions, and it's vital to uncover the peculiarities of this weapon now in a training environment so we can employ it with no issues in combat."

Since LJDAMs had never been employed by an operational B-1 squadron before, Ellsworth AFB was the first to be evaluated on tactics and procedures while employing LJDAMs.

Newberry added that the Combat Hammer team continuously looks for different scenarios that could occur during combat situations, including GPS jamming, slowing down or speeding up moving targets, and then attempts to replicate them during sorties.

"Evaluators will be able to retrieve data from the telemetry kits on the weapons and build a picture of how the weapon was or was not affected in various scenarios," Newberry said. "That data is invaluable in refining and adjusting our training plans."

Ellsworth AFB is home to two of the nation's three B-1 combat squadrons and carries the lion's share of the deployment taskings involving the B-1. Since 2007, Ellsworth AFB B-1s have deployed 12 of every 18 months in support of missions in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Additionally, aircrews from here conduct missions to rapidly deliver massive quantities of precision and non-precision weapons against adversaries.

Armstrong said that adding LJDAMs to the B-1's already diverse arsenal will only increase the already remarkable mission effectiveness rate Ellsworth AFB has had in current operations around the globe.

UNITAS Pacific Begins in Peru

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Stuart Phillips, Southern Seas 2012 Public Affairs

CALLAO, Peru (NNS) -- Naval representatives from Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru and the United States gathered in the Ricardo Palma auditorium at the Peruvian naval base to officially recognize the beginning of UNITAS Pacific (PAC) at an opening ceremony in Callao, Peru, May 14.

Leaders from each country's navy took turns addressing the audience as the ceremony commenced.

Capt. Ace Van Wagoner, commander of Destroyer Squadron 40 and mission commander of UNITAS PAC, represented the U.S. Navy at the ceremony. After thanking Peru for hosting UNITAS PAC and for demonstrating hospitality and professionalism to the U.S., Van Wagoner spoke about the importance of UNITAS for everyone involved.

"This exercise is a renewed promise to enhance regional partnerships and promote hemispheric stability," said Van Wagoner. "Through exercises like UNITAS, we learn from each other, sharing the best practices and proving collective reliability for addressing hemispheric maritime challenges."

The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Underwood (FFG 36) is representing the U.S. Navy during UNITAS PAC. Underwood's commanding officer, executive officer and command master chief also attended the ceremony.

UNITAS will include live-fire exercises, a drone exercise, nighttime ship evolutions, tactical maneuvering, maritime interdiction operations, flight operations among other events and joint operations.

"I hope everyone leaves here at the end of UNITAS having learned something new from one another," said Van Wagoner. "I hope we exchange experiences and gain new perspectives on each other's cultures and people. We are here today because we are professional mariners and on the seas we will share our operational capabilities and enhance communications training in dynamic, real-time environments. In today's world, these skills are what will provide joint security and stability in our hemisphere."

U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. 4th Fleet (COMUSNAVSO/C4F) supports USSOUTHCOM joint and combined full-spectrum military operations by providing principally sea-based, forward presence to ensure freedom of maneuver in the maritime domain, to foster and sustain cooperative relationships with international partners and to fully exploit the sea as maneuver space in order to enhance regional security and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Caribbean, Central and South American regions.

Pelicans Like Ike

By Lt.j.g. Matt Melfa, Patrol Squadron 45 Public Affairs

MAYPORT, Fla (NNS) -- The Pelicans of P-3C Orion Patrol Squadron (VP) 45 continue to play an integral role in Carrier Strike Group 8's composite unit training exercise (COMPTUEX).

The ongoing 24-day exercise spans waters and airspace from the Chesapeake Bay to Florida's Space Coast, to simulate a modern conflict against symmetric and asymmetric forces.

"I've enjoyed the chance to be a part of something that involves the rest of the Navy," said Lt.j.g. John Leeds, VP-45 navigation and communication officer. "Most of the time we are out there alone and unafraid, so it's interesting to see how the P-3 fits in to the greater warfighting capabilities of the Navy."

The exercise is designed to mirror the entire spectrum of warfare that the strike group can face on today's oceans and battlefields. The Pelicans have been supporting round-the-clock flight operations to participate in the exercise.

The P-3's missions in the strike group include anti-submarine warfare, water space sanitization for a simulated strait transits and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance collection on land based and maritime targets.

COMPTUEX includes participants from all of the Navy's warfare communities, as well as components from the Spanish Navy, Brazilian Navy and contract aggressor air units. Cmdr. Michael Vitali, VP-45's executive officer has been aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) for the exercise to provide P-3 strategic advisement and liaise between the squadron and the strike group regarding maritime patrol support.

"I love seeing the Orion at work," said Vitali. "It's amazing how the P-3's capabilities can extend the eyes of the strike group beyond the horizon so that they have a perfect picture of any potential maritime threats long before they arrive. I couldn't be more proud of the work the Pelicans are doing out here."

The culmination of VP-45's involvement of the exercise came when they flew on the BMS Tikuna, a Brazilian Type-209 submarine. The Tikuna played the role of an enemy submarine force attempting to infiltrate the strike group water-space to gather intelligence and carry off a torpedo attack on the strike group's surface assets. VP-45 aircrew demonstrated the unsurpassed airborne anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the P-3 when they held the Tikuna in contact for six hours and delivered four successful torpedo attacks on the boat.

"With the widespread proliferation of submarine technology in the 21st century, this exercise emphasized how indispensable the P-3 is to strike group operations, despite being one of the oldest airframes in the Navy's inventory," said Lt.j.g. Matt Melfa, a member of VP-45.

COMPTUEX is designed to test and evaluate the cooperation and operational capabilities of participating units, ensuring preparation and qualification for upcoming deployments. The exercise has included more than 15 U.S. and foreign ships operating together through a dynamic scenario.
