US Navy Conducts Simultaneous Bilateral Exercises with JMSDF and ROK

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- U.S. Navy ships are conducting simultaneous bilateral maritime exercises with the Republic of Korea Navy and with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force today and tomorrow (April 25-26, local time).

The destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) and ROKN Wang Geon (DDH 978) are conducting combined maritime exercises in waters west of the Korean Peninsula while the destroyers USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and JMSDF JS Chokai (DDG 176) execute combined maritime exercises in waters west of Japan.

Both exercises demonstrate a shared commitment to security and stability in Northeast Asia as well as the U.S. Navy's inherent flexibility to combine with allied naval forces in response to a broad range of situations.

US, Egypt Commence Exercise Eagle Salute 2017

RED SEA (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy with the Egyptian Naval Forces commenced exercise
Eagle Salute 2017 in the Red Sea, April 23.

Eagle Salute 2017 incorporates Eagle Response 2017, an explosive ordnance exercise,
to provide opportunities for participating nations to collaborate on an even wider range
of maritime security operations. These exercises focus on sharing knowledge and
experiences in order to enhance solid regional partnerships.

Several vessels will participate in the exercise including guided-missile destroyer USS
Truxtun (DDG 103) and Egyptian Naval Force guided-missile frigate ENS Taba
(F 916).

"We are fortunate to have this opportunity to strengthen our maritime security
capabilities and our relationship with the participating nations," said Cmdr. Troy
Denison, Truxtun commanding officer. "Exercises like Eagle Salute provide our
Sailors the unique chance to learn from our allied countries and show them
what we can do."

The exercise began with a harbor phase focused on team-building activities.

Events included a sports day and a "damage control olympics," a friendly competition
in firefighting, hose handling and pipe patching, concluding with a reception. The
exercise will end with an at-sea phase involving a live-fire gunnery exercise, division
tactics in which multiple ships maneuver in close proximity and a joint air defense
exercise.

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command conducts more than 20 bilateral and multilateral
exercises with partner nations throughout the region each year. Exercise Eagle Salute
is one of numerous exercises vital to the U.S. Navy's theater security cooperation
efforts in building and enhancing solid regional and international relationships.

USS Michigan Busan ROK Port Visit

Nimitz Strike Group Successfully Completes COMPTUEX

PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) Carrier Strike
Group (CSG) 11 successfully completed its final pre-deployment
assessment, Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), April 21,
marking the completion of its condensed Inter-Deployment Training
Cycle (IDTC) for an upcoming deployment.

COMPTUEX is an exercise that tests a strike group's ability to work and
operate as one cohesive unit in a simulated real-world-scenario based
training environment.

Nimitz was joined by CSG 11, to include Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9
and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, to prove their operational capabilities prior
to deploying.

Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, said COMPTUEX is
designed to put a strike group through the highest level of training that we
can possible give. This allows them to go forward around the world and do
anything that our country would ask them to do.

Throughout the exercise, the strike group encountered an environment that
mirrored, as closely as possible, what they may encounter while deployed
in future areas of operation.

"Considering that the past five weeks have been the first time that the
Nimitz Carrier Strike Group has trained together at sea in more than three
years, we did extremely well," said Commander, CSG 11, Rear Adm. Bill
Byrne. "We did a lot of high velocity learning."

Nimitz, during the COMPTUEX, became the first carrier strike group to
implement the use of the Fleet Warfighting Training System Live, Virtual,
Constructive (LVC) training concept. LVC allows for the synthetic virtual
environment to be integrated with the live environment, providing a more
comprehensive and realistic training environment.

LVC can create scenarios that involve higher complexities and stress the
strike group to its max capabilities, leading to more proficient strike groups
and fighting forces while better preparing them for what they may encounter
while deployed.

The COMPTUEX was broken up into two separate phases.

Phase I closely followed a schedule of events (SOE) that acted as a training
phase for Sailors and watchstanders. Phase II provided the strike group with
a scenario that didn't follow an SOE, and is more realistic.

"Some of it might be in a synthetic environment, some is live, but overall it is
designed to really challenge the strike group," said Tyson. "This is so that,
from Rear Adm. Byrne, to the youngest Sailor on the deck plates, everyone
feels confident that, if you have to go into any scenario where you are tested
to the highest end of your capability, you will be able to comfortably go and
succeed."

The COMPTUEX challenged and trained the strike group on all levels including
the Sailors on the deckplates.

"I believe the training was invaluable," said Cryptologic Technician (Technical)
2nd Class Traci Allen, Combat Systems' Electronic Warfare (EW) Module
Supervisor, and a native of Chattanooga, Tennesee. "We finally got the chance
to work with our whole strike group and figure out our battle rhythm. The
experiences we gained will follow us over the horizon when we take to open
water. Nothing and no one can take that away from us."

Commander, CSG 15, Rear Adm. Ross Myers and his staff acted as the grading
entity for the COMPTUEX. They observed the Sailors aboard Nimitz and
throughout the strike group as they reacted to scenarios that they may face on
deployment and determined their proficiency to operate in a real-world
environment.

"CSG 15, our trainers and assessors, presented an enemy and warfighting
environment that was both relevant and realistic," said Byrne. "This is the
best training scenario I've seen in my 30 years of working these types of
battle problems. That sort of competitiveness, initiative, and toughness I saw
across the strike group is exactly what the Chief of Naval Operations asks of us."

With the completion of COMPTUEX, the Nimitz carrier strike group is now
fully certified to deploy later this year.

"We are going to be tested. We need to go forth confident that we will be
competitive enough and that we will be tough enough to prevail. I have no
doubt that Nimitz Strike Group is both," said Byrne.

Vinson CSG in Philippine Sea

Eisenhower Strike Group Sustaining Readiness if Called Upon

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Approximately 6,000 Sailors from the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) are conducting a sustainment exercise (SUSTEX) to maintain their readiness and capability to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice should the need arise.

"Ike CSG is doing a great job on SUSTEX. Sustaining the readiness of this strike group--so it is ready to respond to a crisis anywhere on the planet--is a bargain and an important part of what our Navy's Optimized Fleet Response Plan does for the nation," said Adm. Phil Davidson, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces.

SUSTEX is designed to test and train the carrier strike group's ability to perform and effectively respond as an integrated team during scenarios the group may encounter while deployed or during high-end warfare.

"Since returning in December 2016 from our combat deployment to the Arabian Gulf, Red Sea and Eastern Mediterranean, our tasking has been to remain deployment-ready in all respects," said Rear Adm. Jim Malloy, commander of Ike CSG. "The Navy has invested and focused its limited resources to keep us fully manned, trained and equipped in case we are needed for a crisis."

The exercise consists of a variety of training evolutions including anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, strike warfare, irregular warfare and maritime interdiction scenarios.

"SUSTEX provides a realistic and challenging at-sea opportunity to refresh those skills, apply what we learned on deployment and integrate any new personnel who might have rotated in since we deployed," explains Malloy.

Capt. Marc Miguez, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 commander, said the underway period, the air wing's first extended underway aboard Ike since completing the 2016 deployment, has proven to be a seamless re-integration as the Ike-Battle Axe team.

"This team learned how to effectively work together and execute the missions necessary to successfully complete our last deployment. We are back together now, honing our skills, processes and procedures to ensure we are combat ready to respond if called upon again," said Miguez.

Ike CSG comprised of its flagship, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike), embarked CVW-3, staffs of CSG-10 and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26 and its associated ships: the guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) and guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61), are participating in the SUSTEX as part of the Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP).

The squadrons of CVW-3, include Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 32 "Swordsmen," VFA-86 "Sidewinders," VFA-105 "Gunslingers," and VFA-131 "Wildcats;" Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 " Zappers;" Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 123 "Screwtops;" Carrier Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 40 "Rawhides;" Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74 "Swamp Foxes;" and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 7 "Dusty Dogs."

USS Makin Island Concludes Hong Kong Port Visit

Two Anchorage-based fighter jets intercepted a pair of Russian bombers Monday night off Kodiak Island in what an Air Force commander called the first such flight seen near Alaska in nearly two years.

Lt. Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, head of both the Alaskan Command and the Alaska NORAD Region, said Tuesday that the detection and intercept of the Tu-95 Bear bombers took place over the course of about two hours from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

"I can't go into all of the details on how we detected them, but we did detect them," Wilsbach said. "We were tracking them basically paralleling the Aleutian Islands roughly 100 miles to the south."

In response, two F-22 Raptor jets on standby were launched from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, along with an E-3 Sentry AWACS radar plane. Wilsbach said they were supported by an Alaska Air National Guard KC-135 tanker aircraft launched from Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks.

The F-22s intercepted the Bears about 100 miles southwest of Kodiak, Wilsbach said. The propeller-driven bombers didn't have any external signs of weaponry, and the pilots had no verbal contact.

"There is a procedure where we can talk to them, but generally we don't unless it's some sort of dangerous situation," Wilsbach said. "They waved at one another, but other than that there was no communication."

Eisenhower Strike Group Completes First OFRP SUSTEX

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) completed the first sustainment exercise (SUSTEX) under the Navy's Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP), April 11.

Prior to OFRP, carrier strike groups disaggregated following deployment and did not reintegrate until the work up cycle for the next deployment. Under OFRP, the carrier strike group remains intact throughout the integrated and sustainment phases.

The sustainment phase includes pre-deployment, deployment and post-deployment timelines, ensuring forces remain ready to deploy and surge if necessary. This maximizes the Navy's forward presence with available ship capacity.

Ike and its carrier strike group are underway participating in the sustainment exercise designed to maintain deployment readiness as part of the Navy's OFRP.

"OFRP balances forward presence requirements with maintenance and operational tempo in a way that ensures forces are ready to deploy, or in our case surge forward, if needed, with the right capabilities," said Rear Adm. Jim Malloy, commander of Ike CSG. "By having the CSG maintained at peak material readiness while continuing to train and operate together, we remain ready."

The two-week, live event driven exercise consisted of staffs, air wing and ships that deployed together, including the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, CSG-10, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87), and guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61).

SUSTEX is designed to reverify, test and train the carrier strike group's ability to perform and effectively respond as an integrated team during simulated scenarios the group may encounter while deployed or during high-end warfare.

CSG-10 worked in conjunction with CSG-4 to ensure the most realistic training evolutions including simulated opposing forces in anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, strike warfare, irregular warfare, and maritime interdiction scenarios.

The lessons learned and best practices will be incorporated into future CSG SUSTEX.

"Our successful SUSTEX has set the initial framework for other carrier strike groups to adopt and modify to their own post-deployment training plan," Malloy said.

At the conclusion of the exercise, Malloy said, "The strike group's outstanding performance in this complex and challenging exercise speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of the officers and Sailors in our ships and squadrons, as they rapidly integrated for the first time in three months and quickly regained fighting form, honing warfighting readiness and maintaining the edge that made our deployment so successful."

Japanese fighter jets were scrambled to warn six incoming Russian aircraft flying near Tokyo-claimed airspace, NHK reported Wednesday, local time.

The deployment of the aircraft of Japan's self-defense forces took place on Tuesday after two Russian Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers were seen near Japan's claimed portion of the Pacific Ocean.
Russia then sent two Ilyushin Il-38 fighters to an area near the coast of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, and that same afternoon deployed two anti-submarine warfare aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-142, to the Sea of Japan.

Two of the aircraft, most likely the Ilyushin Il-38 fighters, flew across the Pacific Ocean, then made a U-turn after reaching an offshore area near Tokyo.

The fighter jets returned to Russian territory following a course toward Hokkaido, according to the report.

Japanese airspace was not trespassed, the military said.

Tokyo is on alert for any further provocations in the region, particularly from North Korea.

Pyongyang most recently conducted a missile test that ended in failure, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the launch a grave threat to national security.

Japan is also coordinating an upcoming joint exercise with the U.S. aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, the Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday, local time.

The supercarrier is en route to the Korean peninsula, but will make a stopover in Japan to conduct joint training, according to Japan's defense ministry.

The drill is to take place in the East China Sea, in an area west of Kyushu in southern Japan.
North Korea warned of "catastrophic consequences" following the U.S. Navy decision to reroute the Carl Vinson back to the peninsula.

Unusual Navy Patrol Activity Sparks Fear of Foreign Sub Off SoCal Coast

Anti-submarine aircraft have been loitering over the same area off the California coast for hours, which is fueling speculation that a Russian – or a North Korean – submarine was spotted in the area.

While the report of a foreign vessel is unconfirmed at this point, the military patrol is apparently not part of a routine exercise due to the number of aircraft hovering over the same area and the late hours of operation.

The patrol includes multiple low-flying aircraft including a Navy EP-3E Aries II, which is used for electronic surveillance, a Navy P-3C Orion, which is used for submarine spotting, and a Boeing P-8 Poseidon used for anti-submarine warfare.Additionally, a Royal Canadian CP-140 Orion, also known for submarine spotting, joined the search.

U.S. Reroutes Warships Toward Korean Peninsula in Show of Force

WASHINGTON — The commander of American forces in the Pacific has ordered an aircraft carrier and several other warships toward the Korean Peninsula in a show of force by the Trump administration just days after North Korea tested another intermediate-range missile.

The officer, Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., the head of the military’s Pacific Command, diverted the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and its wing of fighter jets from a planned series of exercises and port calls in Australia, the command said in a statement. The Vinson and three guided-missile destroyers and cruisers steamed out of Singapore on Saturday for their new mission in the Western Pacific.

USS CARL VINSON, At Sea (NNS) -- Adm. Harry Harris, commander, U.S. Pacific Command, has directed the Carl Vinson Strike Group to sail north and report on station in the Western Pacific Ocean after departing Singapore April 8.

Carl Vinson Strike Group, including Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) and USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112), and Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), will operate in the Western Pacific rather than executing previously planned port visits to Australia. The Strike Group will remain under the operational control of U.S. 3rd Fleet as part of the 3rd Fleet Forward initiative.

Deployed from San Diego to the Western Pacific since Jan. 5, the Strike Group has participated in numerous bilateral exercises with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and Republic of Korea Navy, various maritime security initiatives, and routine patrol operations in the South China Sea.

For more than 70 years, the U.S. Navy has maintained a persistent naval presence in the Indo-Asia Pacific. The U.S. Navy is committed to continuing this forward presence, which is focused on stability, regional cooperation and economic prosperity for all nations. Carl Vinson has deployed to the region several times, starting with a deployment to the Western Pacific in 1983, a year after commissioning. Most recently in 2015, Carl Vinson conducted port visits and exercises with regional navies in the South China Sea.

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Russian warship steams toward US destroyers that launched Syria strikes

Fox News is reporting that one of the Russian Navy's most modern frigates  has entered the eastern Mediterranean Sea Friday and is heading toward the two U.S. Navy destroyers that launched missile strikes into Syria.

The Russian naval frigate, Admiral Grigorovich RFS-494, crossed through the Bosphorus Strait “a few hours ago” from the Black Sea, according to a U.S. defense official. 

The Admiral Grigorovich class (Фрегаты проекта 11356Р/М) is the latest class of frigates ordered by the Russian Navy for the Black Sea Fleet. Six ships (two batches of three ships) have been ordered so far to be built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. Some reports indicate that the Grigorovich uses the CW call sign of RGR79 and a voice call sign of Buryevestnik.

More Mystery US Registered Aircraft Over Iraq

Peter Harley, who follows our @MilcomMP twitter feed posted yesterday about a probable fake US registration/hex code. The registration N11710/A048C8 in the FAA database is reserved to NCH Flight Services in Tampa FLA. Of course a Google search drew a complete blank. Spec Ops or a three letter agency would be my best guess.

And now today Peter Harley posted on his twitter feed (@PeterHarley20) that he has spotted another mystery US aircraft registration flying over Iraq. Like yesterday's registration/hex code this one it is not a current US registered airframe.

The aircraft was seen flying over the same area as above using the registration N5064N with a hex code of A6532B. The FAA database says this registration is cancelled and not assigned. So is this an aircraft that was sold to some entity in Iraq and they have not replaced the US credentials with Iraqi reg? Or is this something else such as what I mentioned above, Spec Ops or an aircraft from a three letter US agency?

Blue Angels Announce New Commanding Officer

NAVAL AIR STATION PENSACOLA, Fla. (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, announced the commanding officer for the 2018 and 2019 seasons at a press conference at the National Museum of Aviation onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, April 4.

A selection panel comprised of 10 admirals and former commanding officers selected Cmdr. Eric Doyle to succeed Cmdr. Ryan Bernacchi.

Applicants are required to have a minimum of 3,000 flight hours and be in current command or have had past command of a tactical jet squadron.

Doyle, a native of League City, Texas, joins the Blue Angels after serving as the commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113. His previous assignments include six squadron tours, where he flew the F/A-18 Hornet and F-22A Raptor as an operational test pilot. He has deployed in support of Operations Southern Watch, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve.

Doyle attended Texas A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1996. He earned his commission through the Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida. Doyle has more than 3,000 flight hours and 600 carrier-arrested landings. His decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (with combat V), Navy Commendation Medals (one with combat V), and Navy Achievement Medal, as well as various campaign and unit awards.

"This was a childhood dream come true," said Doyle. "My motivation to become a pilot came from watching the Blue Angels."

Doyle will serve as commanding officer and flight leader for the 2018 and 2019 Blue Angels air show seasons. He will report for initial training in Pensacola, Florida in September and officially take command of the squadron at the end of the air show season in November. The change of command ceremony is slated for Nov. 12, at the National Naval Aviation Museum.

As the Blue Angels' commanding officer, Doyle will lead a squadron of 130 personnel and serve as the demonstration flight leader, flying the #1 jet. The Blue Angels perform for 11 million people annually across the United States, and are scheduled to perform 61 shows in 33 locations for the 2018 season.

Carl Vinson Strike Group Arrives in Singapore

SINGAPORE (NNS) -- Aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, Arleigh Burke -class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) and Ticonderoga -class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) arrived in Singapore for a scheduled port visit, April 4.

Prior to the visit, the Carl Vinson Strike Group (CSG-1) completed two weeks of routine operations in the Asia-Pacific region, including maritime exercises with the Republic of Korea Navy and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. The ship also operated in the South China Sea during this deployment.

"This port visit reaffirms our commitment to the U.S.-Singapore defense relationship and our shared belief that lawful use of the sea and airspace are essential to prosperity, stability and security for all nations in the Pacific," said Rear Adm. Jim Kilby, CSG-1 commander. "We greatly appreciate the opportunity to return or in many cases visit this great country for the first time."

Carl Vinson will host a reception for distinguished visitors including the United States' Deputy Chief of Mission to Singapore
Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath; Vice Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet; Fleet Commander Cheong Kwok Chien; and various high commissioners, military attaches and distinguished members of the U.S. and Singapore Diplomatic Corps.

"Vinson Sailors are excited about Singapore and this port visit," said Capt. Doug Verissimo, Carl Vinson commanding officer. "They tirelessly execute the carrier's mission in providing a presence here in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. They work hard to better themselves personally and professionally, and now they have an opportunity to get some well-deserved rest and take in the sights and culture of Singapore."

During the port visit, CSG-1 Sailors will volunteer off-duty time to various charitable and community organizations. CVW-2 Sailors will volunteer at Willing Hearts, a soup kitchen, and Sailors stationed aboard Lake Champlain will volunteer with Child @ Street 11, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping low-income families provide education for their children.

Additionally, members of Carl Vinson's Junior Enlisted Association and Second Class Petty Officers Association will volunteer at a food bank where they will move food and receive donations.

The strike group will continue on their regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment after departing Singapore.

U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific routinely for more than 70 years. Carl Vinson has deployed to the region and has operated in the South China Sea during 16 separate deployments over its 35-year history.

Carrier Strike Group ONE departed San Diego for a regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific, Jan. 5. Carl Vinson, CVW 2 and embarked Destroyer Squadron (CDS) 1 deployed with Lake Champlain and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) and Wayne E. Meyer.

Carrier Strike Group ONE deployed with approximately 6,500 Sailors and will focus on maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts. The strike group assets will conduct bilateral exercises in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to include anti-submarine warfare, maneuvering drills, gunnery exercises, and visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) subject-matter-expert exchanges.

While deployed, Carrier Strike Group ONE will remain under U.S. 3rd Fleet command and control, including beyond the international dateline which previously divided operational areas of responsibility for 3rd and 7th Fleets. Third Fleet operating forward offers additional options to the Pacific Fleet commander by leveraging the capabilities of 3rd and 7th Fleets.
