Editor Note: And then we have this TASS report via the Voice of Russia website that says they may indeed conduct a port visit at Tartus.
Naval squadrons of Russia’s Northern and Baltic Fleets have met in the North Atlantic.
The Russian Defence Ministry points out that the two will merge into one group under a single command by Tuesday night. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet squadron is due to join the group later.
The combined naval group has been set the task of joint sailing and manoeuvring, and driving away mock enemy submarines and aircraft. The group may call at Syria’s seaport of Tartus, a Russian Navy sustainment centre, to replenish their stocks of water and fuel. Russian naval ships in the Mediterranean can use Tartus as a base.
