South Pole airdrop delivers critical medical supplies in total darkness

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AFNS) -- Airmen with the 304th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron here airdropped urgently needed medical supplies Sept. 1 at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica.

The supplies will augment a South Pole medical team's treatment of an ailing civilian wintering there with the U.S. Antarctic Program.

Although accessible by ski-equipped aircraft during the summer season, extreme cold winter temperatures ranging between 70 and 80 degrees below zero, plus continual darkness and strong winds, rule out traveling 800 miles overland and prohibit landing any aircraft at the pole during the winter. South Pole physicians and staff must therefore handle all medical emergencies themselves.

Upon learning that one the staff members at South Pole required additional medical supplies, the National Science Foundation, which is the lead agency for the U.S. Antarctic Program, formally requested help from its inter-agency partner, Joint Task Force-Support Forces Antarctica. Lt. Gen. Stanley T. Kresge, the commander of both 13th Air Force and JTF-SFA, based at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, called upon his attached C-17 Globemaster III forces, deployed from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wa., to provide a solution.

The solution: a parachute-enabled C-17 air-drop of medical supplies in bitter cold and complete darkness using night-vision devices. Although JTF-SFA plans for such missions and trains for this requirement during the summer season, this is the first time a C-17 has attempted a mid-winter, nighttime air-drop at the South Pole, according to officials.

Lt. Col. Robert Wellington, the commander of the 304th EAS, assigned C-17 weapons and tactics instructor pilot Maj. Rick Kind to plan the mission. Wellington, Kind and the JTF-SFA team worked closely with NSF planners to execute the mission.

The typical Operation Deep Freeze mission consists of a 4 1/2-hour flight from Christchurch to McMurdo, with only one hour on the ground before returning to New Zealand. By being able to combine missions, the C-17 crew simply added the 2 1/2-hour flight over the South Pole after the routine stop at McMurdo. Once over the South Pole, the crew released two parachute-supported 200-lb bundles of supplies before heading back to Christchurch.

"During the winter, the only option was to airdrop supplies in," said Lt. Col. Edward Vaughan, Operation Deep Freeze's interim director of joint operations. "Rapid global mobility is one of the Air Force's core capabilities in supporting the joint military team. Year-round airdrop at the South Pole is one of the specific capabilities that the 304th EAS brings to JTF-SFA operations."

Since the South Pole has 24 hours of darkness during the polar winter, the use of night-vision goggles was essential for the mission, officials said. Scheduling the delivery around daylight was not a factor.

"The complex mission, utilizing NVGs to first land at McMurdo and then later acquire the South Pole drop zone, exploited the unique capability of the aircraft and validated the operational procedures developed and the training accomplished over the last several ODF Seasons," Wellington said. "It was the first C-17A winter airdrop at the pole and presents a stellar example of inter-agency cooperation."

According to Kevin Schriner, an NSF contractor and network administrator at the South Pole, the air drop was a complete success. Both packages were dropped and recovered without damage.

"Coming on the heels of the late-June, mid-winter medical evacuation mission from McMurdo (Station, Antarctica), we welcomed another opportunity to provide assistance to the NSF," Wellington said. "Plus, we were fortunate to have the right crew with right qualifications in place when the call came in."

Operation Deep Freeze 2011-2012 begins

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (AFNS) -- Late winter flights, known as WINFLY, for Operation Deep Freeze 2011-2012 began August 20.

Deep Freeze is a joint service, interagency activity that supports the National Science Foundation, which manages the U.S. Antarctic Program.

Lt. Gen. Stanley T. Kresge, the commander of 13th Air Force, is dual-hatted as the commander of Joint Task Force-Support Forces Antarctica, based at Joint Base Pearl-Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. The joint task force's main summer season in Antarctica is slated to begin Sept. 28.

A C-17 Globemaster III from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wa., began delivering passengers and cargo to the NSF McMurdo Station, Antarctica, in support of the United States Antarctic Program. Scientists and support personnel at the station will start pre-summer projects, augment maintenance personnel, and prepare skiways, ice runways and an ice pier.

The airlift part of Operation Deep Freeze operates from two primary locations with C-17s situated at Christchurch, New Zealand and LC-130 Hercules forward based at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, beginning in late October.

The operation year is divided into three main phases: WINFLY, which is currently ongoing, followed by the main summer season and the winter phase. WINFLY is the preparation phase between winter and summer when additional support personnel arrive to prepare the station for the upcoming science field season.

NSF manages the U.S. Antarctic Program through which it coordinates all U.S. scientific research on the southernmost continent and aboard ships in the Southern Ocean as well as related logistics support.

"WINFLY missions are important for total force C-17 crews," said Lt. Col. Edward Vaughan, the Deep Freeze interim director of joint operations. "Aside from hauling support passengers and cargo, the National Science Foundation also permits a night-vision goggle training mission. This annual training mission ensures that C-17 crews are prepared to execute their mission in Antarctica year round."

U.S. military support for Operation Deep Freeze is a Pacific Command responsibility organized as Joint Task Forc -Support Forces Antarctica. The Joint Task Force includes cargo and fuel tanker ships provided by Military Sealift Command, active- duty and Reserve C-17 support from the 62nd and 446th Airlift Wings at JB Lewis-McChord, ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules flown by the 109th AW of the New York Air National Guard, as well as Coast Guard icebreakers and the Navy Cargo Handling Battalion One to provide critical port services at McMurdo Station.

The U.S. military is uniquely equipped and trained to operate in such an austere environment and has therefore provided annual support to U.S. Antarctic research since Rear Adm. Richard E. Byrd began such operations in 1955.

For more information about Operation Deep Freeze, contact Joint Task Force-Support Forces Antarctica Public Affairs at 808-449-7985 or by email at 13af.pa@hickam.af.mil. To learn more about the U.S. Antarctic Program, visit the official website at www.usap.gov.

SJAFB evacuates jets as Irene approaches

An F-15E Strike Eagle takes off as part of an evacuation from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Aug. 25, 2011, in preparation for Hurricane Irene. By the time the eye of the hurricane reaches North Carolina’s Outer Banks, it will be a Category 3 storm with sustained winds between 111 and 130 mph and a nine-to-12-foot storm surge. By Airman 1st Class Mariah Tolbert, 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs

SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. (AFNS) -- As Hurricane Irene approaches, the 4th Fighter Wing and 916th Air Refueling Wing began evacuating approximately 60 F-15E Strike Eagles and eight KC-135R Stratotankers to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., Aug. 25.

In addition to the aircraft sent to Barksdale, the base also sent approximately 350 aircrew and maintainers who are expected to return early next week.

"Officially, this is a hurricane evacuation," said Lt. Col. David Moeller, the 335th Fighter Squadron commander. "The intent is to take the F-15Es and KC-135Rs and get them out of harm's way. Each (F-15E) jet costs approximately $54 million; there is (more than) $5 billion worth of assets here at Seymour Johnson, so this is an attempt to mitigate the risk."

The base's biggest concern is the base personnel and aircraft resources, said Capt. Ryan Rickert, the 4th Operation Support Squadron weather flight commander. Moving the aircraft is important because, with a limited number of hangars, aircraft sitting out on the airfield are exposed to the elements.

"The biggest threat to us would be the winds," Rickert said. "With the conditions being dry lately, the precipitation could impact the county and the base, but we're not seeing the rain fall to be a big deal."

Based on the forecast track, Seymour Johnson AFB is expected to see wind gusts of more than 35 knots, which is approximately 45 miles per hour or more, Rickert said.

"Seymour Johnson is the largest F-15E base in the Air Force," Moeller said. "As such, it has a mission to not only train the young fighter pilots and weapons system officers, but also to maintain combat capability to deploy jets to Iraq and Afghanistan. By moving these jets away from Hurricane Irene's path, we ensure they will be available for the training as well as the operational missions."

All Sortie Ships Underway in Preparation for Hurricane Irene

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109), left, and USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) depart Naval Station Norfolk ahead of Hurricane Irene. Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, commander of U.S. 2nd Fleet, ordered all ships in the Hampton Roads area to set Sortie Condition Alpha. Ships in the area are departing the area early Thursday morning, Aug. 25. Irene's current track indicates it will pass off the North Carolina and Virginia coasts late Saturday as a Category 3 hurricane. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Rafael Martie/Released)

Blog Editor Note: I have heard Navy traffic from the ships underway on 4372.0 kHz USB yesterday as the ships departed NORVA. That tri-graph traffic continued into the evening hours.

NORFOLK (NNS) -- All U.S. Navy ships in Hampton Roads, Va., ordered to get underway Aug. 25, have sortied in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

Twenty-seven ships departed and will be clear of the storm's path by midday Aug. 27.

These ships will rendezvous with 11 other ships that remain at sea.

Twenty-eight additional ships were taken to safe haven for various reasons, such as being in a particular maintenance status that does not allow them to get underway. Safe havens are predesignated piers that offer better protection against weather than a general pier.

Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet, said that the decision to sortie the ships from Hampton Roads is based on Hurricane Irene's current track that indicates the storm will produce at least 50 knots of wind and a five to seven foot storm surge, which meets the critiera for getting the fleet underway to avoid storm damage.

"We are being prudent mariners, getting our ships underway so that they can better weather Hurricane Irene" said Holloway. "This will be a significant storm, so not only do we need to keep our ships safe but also our families. With the forecasted destructive winds and tidal surge, we could see some significant damage here on land. Now is the time for our families to execute the plan they prepared for. Now is the time, before the storm hits."

Second Fleet Sets Sortie Condition Bravo in Preparation for Hurricane Irene

NORFOLK (NNS) -- Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet ordered all U.S. Navy ships in the Hampton Roads, Va., area to set Sortie Condition Bravo Aug. 23, in order to maintain fleet readiness as a precaution due to the approach of Hurricane Irene.

Sortie Condition Bravo requires that ships make necessary preparations to get underway within 24 hours.

The setting of a sortie condition does not mean the actual sortie is inevitable. Should weather forecasts indicate, the sortie condition may be downgraded at any time.

While Hurricane Irene is currently a category II hurricane, it is forecasted to strengthen during the next 72 hours. Irene's current track indicates a possible landfall along the Virginia and North Carolina coasts late Aug. 27 as a major category III hurricane.

"We learned last hurricane season with Hurricane Earl that we must be prepared even sooner to make the decision to sortie," said Vice Adm. Daniel Holloway, Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet. "If the decision is made to sortie the fleet, as prudent mariners we must ensure that our ships have enough time to avoid storm damage and transit out of the path of the storm, well ahead of it."

"Now is also a critical time for family readiness," said Holloway. "Families should take this time in advance of a pending storm to review or make their plan and verify that their survival kits have everything that they will need if the hurricane makes landfall in Hampton Roads."

Former Air Force Two lands at DAFB

Courtesy of WGMD.com

The former Air Force Two, which carried foreign dignitaries and heads of state, U.S. Vice Presidents, First Ladies and even Presidents (in which case it became Air Force One) will now be on permanent display at the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base. The plane landed at the base just after 1 o’clock this afternoon. After traveling through a wall of water sprayed by two Dover Air Force Base Fire Department tankers, the crew parked it in the museum’s display area. After a brief ceremony, visitors were allowed to walk through the plane, from the rear to the front entrance, including through the conference room, where we can only imagine the number and magnitude of political and policy discussions which took place in that room. That thought is what awed many of the visitors, and even the plane’s captain, Col. Bill Edwards, commander of the 932nd Airlift Wing at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

The twin-engine VC-9 aircraft was replaced in the Presidential Fleet by Boeing 757s. Edwards says that now, the Vice President and Congressional delegations travel abroad on C-40s, which he says resemble 737s.

The plane will eventually be displayed outside the control tower at the museum, and will be one of the first displays visitors will see when they come to the museum.

And a related story from WGMD.com from earlier this month

Air Force Two will become a part of the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base next week. The VC-9 jet served 30 years carrying presidents, vice presidents and first ladies. The light blue, white and aluminum jet will arrive around 1pm on Thursday the 18th.

NEWS RELEASE: Air Force Two Arrives at the AMC Museum August 18th

A VC-9 jet that served for thirty years transporting presidents, vice presidents and first ladies will fly in to take its place at the Air Mobility Command Museum.

At approximately 1 p.m. Aug 18, a rather distinctive aircraft will be landing at Dover Air Force Base, Del. Aircraft that transport our nation’s most senior leaders, from members of Congress to the President, are painted in a distinctive light blue, white and polished aluminum scheme.

Serial number 73-1682 was assigned to the 89th Wing at Joint Base Andrews; their mission is to support the president and other distinguished leaders. It is a twin-engine jet that can fly at 565 miles per hour at 35,000 feet. The interior is configured with seating for support staff and a conference area for in-flight meetings as well as an extensive communications suite.

Among the many dignitaries transported were Former Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, making it Air Force One when transporting the president. Mostly, it was used by Former Vice Presidents George H. W. Bush, Dan Quayle, and Walter Mondale as Air Force Two.

In 2005, it was transferred to the USAF reserve when the Boeing 757 took its place in the Presidential Fleet. It will be delivered by a crew from the 932nd Airlift Wing from Scott AFB, Ill.

The arrival ceremony is open to the public. Please arrive a half hour early. Parking and admission is free.

Access to the museum is off Delaware Route 9 just a half mile from Exit 91 of DE Route 1 south of the base. Visitors can follow the AMC Museum signs for easy access.

Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free and photography is welcome. Adults and children of all ages are encouraged to come and enjoy learning about the history of your United States Air Force. Call 302-677-5938 for more information.
