New Summer 2017 International Shortwave Broadcast Guide Now Available

Teak Publishing is pleased to announce the release of the Summer 2017 International Shortwave Broadcast Guide (ISWBG) electronic book by Amazon bestselling author Gayle Van Horn, W4GVH. This all important semi-annual information resource is your electronic guide to the world of shortwave radio listening.

The release of this book is very timely for international radio monitors given the recent outbreak of tensions in the world hotspots of Eastern Europe, Middle East, East Asia and the Korean Peninsula.

Shortwave radio listeners are routinely entertained with unique perspectives to events, music, culture, history, and news from other countries that you won’t see or hear on your local or national broadcast channels. Shortwave radio broadcast aren’t restricted by country borders or oceans, and can propagate thousands of miles, reaching millions of listeners worldwide, in over 300 different languages and dialects. These worldwide transmissions are monitored on internationally assigned radio frequencies between 1700 kHz and 30 MHz.

There are even broadcasts from the dark side, transmitted from broadcasters known as clandestine or clanny stations. Clandestine broadcasters are wrapped in mystery and intrigue, and they usually exist to bring about some sort of political change to the country they are targeting. Programming may largely be half-truths or sometimes even outright lies, but it is essentially propaganda for their cause.

Listeners who live in the United States can easily hear shortwave broadcast stations from Canada, China, Cuba, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, New Zealand, North/South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, and many other counties if you have an inexpensive shortwave radio receiver, and you know when and where to listen!

If you want to get in on the action, then this Amazon electronic book is your ticket the travel the world via radio. The ISWBG is our exclusive 24-hour station/frequency guide to “all” of the known longwave, selected mediumwave and shortwave radio stations currently broadcasting at time of publication. This unique radio hobby resource is the “only” radio hobby publication that has by-hour station schedules that include all language services, frequencies and world target areas.

New in this eighth edition of the ISWBG is an Surfing the Shortwave Radio Bands without a Radio by senior radio monitor Larry Van Horn Summertime Listening on Shortwave, by shortwave program specialist Fred Waterer, and a feature very timely feature - When News Breaks: Getting Your News from the Front Lines through streaming media by Loyd Van Horn.

There is also an expanded special feature on Who’s Who in the shortwave radio spectrum by former Monitoring Times editor and feature writer Larry Van Horn N5FPW. This story covers services and frequencies outside the regular broadcast and amateur radio bands, and includes our new, exclusive Hot HF 1000+ non-broadcast frequency list. The final feature article in this edition is Getting Started in Shortwave Radio, a primer, by Spectrum Monitor managing editor Ken Reitz KS4ZR.

Also included in this edition is increased frequency and station coverage of longwave broadcasters, selected medium wave broadcast frequencies used by international broadcasters, all known international standard time and frequency stations transmitting worldwide, and some selected spy numbers broadcasts.

The International Shortwave Broadcast Guide (Summer 2017 edition) is now available for purchase worldwide from Amazon.com at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071VMYYMH/.

USS Abraham Lincoln Underway for Sea Trials

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Mark Logico
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (NNS) -- Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham
Lincoln (CVN 72) got underway for sea trails, May 9, following a four-year
refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding,
Newport News, Virginia.

The four-day sea trails marks Abraham Lincoln's first time underway since
March 2013. The ship spent its last days in the shipyard completing a five-day
"fast cruise," May 2-7, making final preparations for its transit to Naval Station
Norfolk.

"We are looking forward to taking the ship out on the open water where we
belong," said Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt, Lincoln's executive officer. "I am
honored to serve with our crew. This dedicated and impressive group put an
incredible amount of work into revitalizing this ship. We are grateful for their
efforts and to our partners at Newport News Shipbuilding, and eagerly
anticipate completing successful sea trials and returning to the fleet ready
for tasking later this year."

During sea trials, the Abraham Lincoln crew will undergo multiple training
scenarios and qualification evolutions to include engineering maneuvers
designed to evaluate the performance of the ship after the extensive
maintenance period.

"Our team has worked hard to get USS Abraham Lincoln ready to redeliver
to the fleet," said Rear Adm. Brian Antonio, program executive officer for
aircraft carriers. "She has undergone significant combat systems modernization
and will also be the first CVN capable of accommodating the F-35C
Lightning II. This RCOH enabled the ship to meet future missions and
continued service life requirements for many years to come."

During RCOH, more than 2.5 million man-hours of work were conducted
aboard the ship, including refueling the reactors, upgrading ship's infrastructure
and modernizing combat systems and air wing capabilities to increase combat
effectiveness.

Abraham Lincoln is the fifth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier to complete RCOH,
a major lifecycle milestone at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of
Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News. She returns to the fleet as
one of the most modern and technologically-advanced Nimitz-class aircraft
carriers in service and will continue to be a vital part of the nation's defense
for an additional 25 years.

USS Lake Champlain Collision at Sea

WATERS EAST OF THE KOREAN PENINSULA (NNS) (NNS) -- A South Korean
fishing vessel collided with USS Lake Champlain (CG 57) while the guided-missile
cruiser was conducting routine operations in international waters.

No one was injured when the fishing vessel collided with Lake Champlain's port
side, amid ship, at approximately 11:50 a.m. (+9I), May 9.

Both ships were able to navigate under their own power.

The incident is under investigation by both U.S. Navy and South Korea Coast
Guard. Damage assessments of both the Ticonderoga-class guided missile
cruiser and the 60-70 foot long fishing vessel are underway.

Lake Champlain is part of the Carl Vinson Strike Group which is currently
on a Western-Pacific Deployment.

USS Ronald Reagan Departs for Sea Trials

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Greg Johnson
PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier USS
Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), departed Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY)
May 7.

Ronald Reagan's crew shifted colors at 11:54 a.m. and made way to conduct sea
trials in the final phase of the ship's selective restricted availability (SRA) maintenance
period, which began January 10.

"I am extremely proud of the Reagan crew's accomplishments up to this point of our
SRA period," said Capt. Buzz Donnelly, commanding officer. "We are all looking
forward to completing sea trials and returning to operations in the 7th Fleet."

During sea trials, Ronald Reagan's crew will undergo multiple training and
qualification exercises to include engineering and medical drills as well as air,
flight deck and hangar bay operations to evaluate the performance of Sailors and
their departments.

"A major priority is the safety of our crew as we continue to refine our mission
readiness of our ship, and crew and return to sea," said Donnelly. "To achieve
maximum readiness, it is imperative that we make every effort to identify and
reduce risk."

According to Donnelly, with Ronald Reagan's newest technology and well-
experienced crew, her return to operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet will mark a
significant milestone for the forward-deployed naval forces, reaffirming the
United States commitment to the region.

"The crew has worked tirelessly to get the ship ready to succeed at our mission
at sea," said Capt. Paul Lanzilotta, executive officer. "In partnership with our
SRF (ship repair facility), Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Sumitomo Heavy
Industries teammates, we've been able to complete a tremendous amount of work
