Hurricane Harvey Houston Aircraft Activity

I have had several request asking about government and military aircraft activity in support of rescue operations in the Houston area associated with Hurricane Harvey.

Up until two days ago, weather really hampered air ops. Starting on June 27-28th, but especially yesterday (29 Jun), US government and military operations really cranked up in the Houston TFR (Temporary Flight Restrictions).

Here is a snapshot of all the aircraft flying in the Houston TFR from Jun 25-29. I should note that there were even aircraft registered to Mexico that appear to be part of this major operation. On both the 25-26th hurricane hunter aircraft were flying in the Houston area.

Lots of CG aircraft guard comms, much like we use to hear on the other prim A/G HF channels (5696, etc). Most of the comms were in the clear. Some of the ICE units used voice encryption.

COTHEN is a very active network, one that I recommend most monitors new to ALE comms start with. It is real busy and there are clear comms to monitor. I will have more on this in one of my future Milcom columns in Monitoring Times magazine.

At 2043Z TSC advises K78 he is very weak & if he has the current key to rescan on COTHEN then try again. After rescan TSC advises they will try PVT-3 (spelled) followed by encrypted data signal.

Advises he will be going from Ash Cake to stn Gas Mask & will terminate there. Sink Line advises that Lancelot has &c in stn Sand Blade & to sync on the Orderwire. PP terminated.
