USCGC Bertholf returns home following RIMPAC 2018

From Navaltoday,com

Coast Guard cutter Bertholf (WMSL 750) returned on September 4 to her homeport in Alameda following a nearly 90-day deployment to the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California.
There, Bertholf crewmembers participated in Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2018 which is said to be the world’s largest multi-national naval exercise.
Twenty-five nations, forty-six ships, five submarines, about 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel took part in this year’s RIMPAC.
Bertholf crewmembers executed and assisted in several boardings, humanitarian response scenarios and war-at-sea exercises during RIMPAC which were designed to strengthen international relations with allied navies, according to the coast guard.
Bertholf served as the task force commander for the multi-national, Combined Task Force (CTF) 175, which included naval units from Japan, the Philippines, Peru and France.
Following RIMPAC, the crew sailed to San Diego to conduct tailored ship’s training availability (TSTA) which assessed the crew’s capabilities and operational readiness through testing and evaluation. During TSTA, the crew executed engineering, medical, damage control, navigation, force protection and combat systems oriented drills and exercises.
Bertholf is a 418-foot national security cutter and one of four NSCs homeported in Alameda. NSCs are designed to patrol the open ocean and serve as a command and control center for complex law enforcement, defense and national security missions.
The NSCs displace 4,500 tons with a full load, have a range of 12,000 miles and can endure up to 90-day patrol cycles. The cutters feature advanced command, control, communication, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance equipment, aviation support facilities and a stern cutter boat launch.

Milcom Field Report Coastal GA MilCom; August 2018

Our friend Mac down in south Georgia checks in with his August monitoring intercepts. Thanks for sharing Mac.

August turned out to be an excellent month for monitoring. The 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade at Hunter AAF recently returned from a year-long deployment and began taking to the skies around Savannah during the second half of the month. As I recently blogged
<https://kf4lmt.com/2018/08/29/3rd-combat-aviation-brigade-post-deployment-update-30-august-2018/>, the brigade seems to have some of the aircraft they previously used and some that are new to the unit after their deployment.  It’s been fun to hear the UH-60Ls, HH-60Ms, CH-47Fs, AH-64Ds, and UH-60Ms back in the air over Savannah after a year’s absence.

Unfortunately, the month ended on a somber note. On 25 August, one of the Jumping Place’s Cessna 182s, N4785D, crashed while conducting skydiving operations at the Swainsboro Airport
<http://www.wtoc.com/story/38961373/all-5-passengers-involved-in-swainsboro-plane-crash-identified>. Using the callsigns JUMPER 1 and JUMPER 2, The Jumping Place’s Cessna 182s
are frequently heard on Coastal Georgia area air traffic control frequencies. There were five people on board the aircraft when it crashed; one survived and four perished; my prayers are with their families, friends, and comrades and I pray for the survivor’s recovery.

“By training and operating together, the USS Harry S. Truman and USS Abraham Lincoln strike groups enhance combat readiness and interoperability, and also demonstrate the inherent flexibility and scalability of carrier strike groups,” Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group Commander Rear Adm. Gene Black explained.
The operations include a war-at-sea exercise (WASEX), with scenarios testing the readiness of involved units to carry out strike and air operations as well as formation steaming.
These evolutions provide both carriers, with embarked air wings and accompanying surface ships, the opportunity to operate in close proximity and coordinate maneuvers cooperatively, according to the navy.
“The training conducted with Harry S. Truman Strike Group enabled us to increase our lethality and tactical proficiency. It also demonstrated our navy’s ability to achieve and maintain sea control,” Abraham Lincoln Strike Group Commander Rear Adm. John Wade said.
Participating in the exercise are the embarked air wings of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 and CVW-1, as well as select surface assets from CSG-8 and CSG-12.
Harry S. Truman deployed on April 11, 2018, and is currently deployed conducting operations in the Atlantic Ocean.
Abraham Lincoln is underway in the Atlantic Ocean with Carrier Strike Group 12 conducting Operational Test-1 (OT1) for the F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter.
