Garudas Return to Sea
USS JOHN C. STENNIS, At Sea (NNS) -- For the first time in 15 years EA-6B Prowlers from the "Garudas" of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 134 landed on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier March 18.
VAQ-134 is completing carrier qualifications (CQ) aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) before going to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17, attached to USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70).
The last time a Prowler from VAQ-134 made an arrested landing aboard a carrier was in 1994, when the Garudas went on a Western Pacific deployment with USS Kitty Hawk (CVN 63) before being ordered to a permanent land billet.
VAQ-134 is stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and returned in November from Afghanistan after flying hundreds of missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where the squadron logged approximately 2,000 hours of flight time in support of ground forces.
Due to the various squadrons transitioning from the Prowler to the E/A-18G Growler, an electronic warfare variant of the F/A-18F Super Hornet, land-based Prowler squadrons must fill sea-based air wing billets that need Prowlers.
"It is exciting and professionally rewarding to have the honor of being part of a squadron again and doing what they do to support missions around the world," said VAQ-134 Commanding Officer Cmdr. David Slayton.
VAQ-134 is qualifying five pilots, who must each complete approximately 10 carrier arrested landings during the day and six at night.
"It was a huge shock finding out we're going back to a carrier," said Lt. Ryan Koziol, a VAQ-134 pilot who made the first carrier landing in 15 years for the Garudas. "It was an honor and unexpected. Landing on an aircraft carrier takes more discipline, skill and a lot of training."
Air Force Capt. Tony Breck, an electronic countermeasure officer in the back seat of Koziol's Prowler, made his first carrier landing ever.
"It was awesome," said Breck. "Going from 120 knots to zero is a thrill. It was nothing I ever experienced before."
As the surge-ready carrier, Stennis executes a vital role in the timely training of pilots at sea. By providing a landing platform for VAQ-134, Stennis allows the Garudas' pilots to qualify or re-qualify aboard an aircraft carrier, and gain experience before joining CVW-17.

Navy Combat Ship Earns High Marks on Maiden Voyage

By John J. Kruzel, American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- A month into a maiden voyage that has seen a trio of drug-smuggling attempts thwarted, the commander aboard the Navy's first littoral combat ship described March 22 the vessel's performance to date as "exceptional."
Now floating off the coast of Colombia, Freedom received high marks from Cmdr. Randy Gardner, who delivered an assessment to reporters March 22 from aboard the ship via telephone.
"The performance of the ship so far has been exceptional," he said of the Freedom, which set sail Feb. 16 from Mayport, Fla. "We are learning a lot about what Freedom can do well."
Freedom and its crew grabbed headlines in recent weeks after interdicting three vessels transporting illicit drugs through the western Caribbean. Military officials say the ship's speed, which at roughly 46 miles per hour is significantly faster than U.S. frigates that max out just below 30 miles per hour, is responsible for much of its counternarcotics success.
In its most recent interdiction, Freedom disrupted a high-speed ship known as a "go-fast" vessel and recovered more than 2 tons of cocaine that officials said was bound for the United States.
After detecting the suspected drug vessel March 11, Freedom launched a high-speed pursuit and deployed a separate team of sailors and Coast Guardsmen aboard rigid inflatable boats to intercept it. Smugglers aboard the fleeing vessel began dumping its cargo into the southern Caribbean Sea.
The Navy-Coast Guard response team recovered 72 bales of cocaine weighing a total of 4,680 pounds from the water after being jettisoned from the vessel that was on a "stereotypical route" pursued by drug traffickers with U.S.-bound narcotics, Gardner said.
During its first two successful drug seizures in the Caribbean - on Feb. 22 and March 3 - Freedom seized one "go-fast" vessel, five suspects and more than 3,700 pounds of cocaine.
In addition to counternarcotics operations, Freedom made its first shore leave in Cartagena, Colombia, Gardner said. Freedom also played host to top defense officials from Colombia who toured the ship while it was docked in Cartagena.
Freedom, which is deploying about two and a half years before the first littoral combat ship was expected to be operational, is bound for Panama and Mexico before it's set to return to its home port in San Diego in late April 2010. After undergoing about a month of routine maintenance, the ship then will carry out operations in Canada, followed by an exercise in the Pacific Ocean, military officials said.
Freedom, along with the USS Independence (LCS 2), is at the vanguard of a Navy littoral combat ship fleet that is expected to grow to about 55 vessels by 2035, officials said.

Milcom Streaming Audio Link - Beale AFB/Travis AFB, California
Paul Raguse is experimenting with USTREAM this week to see how it does with his scanner. Paul says he has rather mundane military activity in his area, but it can get busy at times. If you want to monitor Milcom activity from Beale and Travis AFB, give the link below a try.

Stennis Returns to Sea for Squadron Carrier Qualifications
By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Will Tyndall, USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Public Affairs
USS JOHN C. STENNIS, At Sea (NNS) -- USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) returned to sea March 12 to begin fleet replacement squadron carrier qualifications (FRSCQ) and to perform a major ammunition offload.
Carrier qualifications allow newly trained pilots to gain experience landing aboard a carrier in assigned tactical aircraft.
Each pilot is tasked with 12 day arrested landings and six night landings, as well as "touch-and-goes," where aircraft land and take off again without catching an arresting cable.
"What's different from fleet operations is, it's continuous flight ops (operations)," said Cmdr. Shelby Stratton, Stennis' air boss. "We are recovering aircraft and launching continuously, so the pattern is always full."
The 29 fleet replacement squadron pilots are from the "Flying Eagles" of Strike Fighter Squadron VFA 122, the "Sharpshooters" of Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron VMFAT 101 and the "Vikings" of Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ 129. Collectively, they are expected to perform 96 hours of flight operations consisting of 570 arrested landings, a third of which will be at night.
"It's one of the more difficult and taxing things we ask of the flight deck [crews], because it's just continuous flight operations," said Stratton. "It's going to be long 12 hour days with two hour breaks in the middle, then get up and do it again."
After the completion of FRSCQ, Stennis will conduct an ordnance offload prior to returning to its homeport of Bremerton, Wash.
The ordnance offload is scheduled to span three days with Stennis's crew moving 2.5 million pounds of ordnance with 1,300 total lifts by connected and vertical replenishment.
"Even though it's hard work everyone is happy to do it, because it's the end of this cruise and surge period," said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class (AW) Jason Homchick.
Stennis is the surge-ready carrier on the west coast and vital in performing fleet replacement squadron pilot qualifications. Once the qualifications and ammunition offload are complete, the ship will finalize preparations for a planned incremental availability maintenance period.

Freedom Achieves Third Caribbean Drug Seizure
USS FREEDOM, At Sea (NNS) -- The littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1) achieved its third drug seizure March 11, disrupting a high-speed "go-fast" vessel and recovering 2 1/4 tons of cocaine during counter-illicit trafficking (CIT) operations in U.S. 4th Fleet's Area of Responsibility.
While patrolling with embarked Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22, the Litorral Combat Ship Surface Warfare Mission Package and U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment, Freedom detected a suspected drug vessel and began pursuit at high speed.
Freedom deployed a response team of Sailors and Coast Guardsmen to intercept the vessel, which jettisoned its illicit cargo in the southern Caribbean Sea.
An MH-60S Sea Hawk from Freedom forced the go-fast to beach itself. Local officials later confiscated the vessel.
The Navy-Coast Guard response team recovered 72 bales of cocaine, weighing 2,127 kilos (4,680 pounds), from the water.
Freedom's third successful drug interdiction was made possible by the coordinated actions of the Navy, U.S. Coast Guard District 7 and Joint Interagency Task Force-South (JIATF-S).
During its first two successful CIT seizures in the Caribbean, Feb. 22 and March 3, Freedom seized a total of one "go-fast" vessel, five suspects and more than 1,700 kilos of cocaine.
Freedom, which will be homeported in San Diego, is currently on its maiden deployment in the Caribbean and the coasts of Central and South America under the operational control of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet. Freedom is conducting CIT operations in support of JIATF-S, U.S. Southern Command and Coast Guard District 7.
