Mode-S/ADS-B Intercepts 29-30 March 2011 - Brasstown

Time for some more Mode-S/ADS-B Military and Government intercepts from here on the Radio Ranch. Has been a bit quiet here over the last two days. That may be to the low ceilings and bad weather we have been experiencing.

What I haven't listed here are the hundreds of civilian airline and bizjets Mode-S equipped aircraft listings. Those listings would go on and on for pages and I won't post them up here on this subject specific blog. If you are a civilian aviation monitoring enthusiast, then a Mode-S box or a Pinkfroot app should be on your bucketlist.

If you are interested in monitoring voice comms from military and civilian aircraft regardless of band, you need a scanner or HF receiver. The good folks at Grove Enterprises here in Brasstown have a wide selection of scanners and HF receivers, antennas, and other monitoring accessories that will help you hear your radio listening environment. Be sure to check out http://grove-ent.com/ for all your monitoring equipment.

In order to track ADS-B equipped aircraft or AIS ships, if you live near a waterway or the coast, checkout the Pinkfroot Plane Finder and Ship Finder apps for real time tracking on the iPhone, iPod, iPod and now the Android platform as well. Their website is located at http://my.pinkfroot.com/.

Pinkfroot has also just posted up a new on-line live air traffic radar map at planefinder.net, and a super fast ship map at shipfinder.co. Both of these online tracking tools provide amazing ADS-B and AIS virtual radar information straight to your PC or Mac.

To monitoring Mode-S transmissions, you will need some quality receiving equipment. I recommend you checkout the Kinetic Avionics website at http://www.kinetic-avionics.com/. They have some neat toys that will add a whole new dimension to your radio monitoring hobby.

Finally, for some of the best military radio monitoring information available in the public domain, be sure to check out my monthly Milcom column in Monitoring Times magazine. You can even choose a print or electronic versions of this great monthly magazine. Go to http://www.monitoringtimes.com/ to order your subscription.

Bizarre - DoD/Army MARS Exercise? What was this all about?

We certainly had some strange comms late yesterday afternoon and last evening EDT time on some US Army MARS frequencies. Both Jack Metcalfe in Kentucky and my MT colleague Hugh Stegman in California (via his twitter feed @UtilityWorld) reported what appears to be a high level DoD/Army MARS comm exercise.

There were three primary freqs reported:

Freq (Army MARS Designator passed)
14484.0 (KMC)
14487.0 (KME)
20994.0 (KSM)

I'm posting up each of their intercepts so that you can see what was heard.

14484.0 LOOKING GLASS in contact with 9 TANGO FOXTROT. 9TF passed exercise traffic to LOOKING GLASS. 9TF noted LOOKING GLASS would be "off station" in 11 mikes: 1953 USB Voice (29/MAR/2011) (JLM)

14484.0 9 UNIFORM SIERRA ALPHA calling TOP HAND & POKER FACE & raised POKER FACE for AAR8AY. AAR8AY holding traffic for STEP MOTHER. 9TF looking for a new frequency for direct contact with POKER FACE. Moved to 20994.0 USB (KSM) at 2028 UTC: 2019 USB voice (29/MAR/2011) (JLM)

14484.0 USB USAF exercise, unit w/ traffic for STEPMOTHER, others weak. ~2019, ongoing. (Hugh Stegman via Twitter)

14484.0 USB AAN6ELP 2026 clg Stepmother w/traffic. Then wkg ALPHA LIMA JULIET with IMMEDIATE grade msg coded in line format. (Hugh Stegman via Twitter)

14484.0 POKER FACE requesting phone patch, but 9TF not phone patch capable. Placed call & unid station confirmed he would be looking for POKER FACE on RF-17 at station CONCRETE. Also passed UHF MUX frequencies 325.4 & 344.4. 325.4 UHF WBFM just now active here: 2112 USB Voice (29/MAR/2011)(JLM)

14484.0 POKER FACE & 9TF in comms. 9TF passed 4 line message from AAN0BOI & POKER FACE said he would maintain this frequency as primary until he went off station. 325.4 UHF WBFM also still active here at this time.: 2138 USB Voice (29/MAR/2011)(JLM)

14487.0 TOP HAND receiving traffic from 9 TANGO CHARLIE. 9 TANGO FOXTROT suggested a move back to primary frequency KMC (14484.0). At 2325 UTC 9TF relayed traffic through 9USA to TOP HAND: 2336 USB Voice (29/MAR/2011) (JLM)

A very interesting set of comm intercepts indeed and many thanks to Hugh and Jack for sharing them. Now we shall see what pops up to let us determine what this was all about.

Marines Deploy to Libya

More than 2,000 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 2nd Marine Expeditionary force, deployed along with Amphibious Squadron 6 for Libya Tuesday.

DOD Announces Stationing of Two Combat Aviation Brigades

The Department of Defense announced today the stationing of two Army combat aviation brigades. The 16th Combat Aviation Brigade will be split-based and established at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., and Fort Wainwright, Alaska, using existing aviation units not currently assigned to a combat aviation brigade. A new brigade will be activated at Fort Carson, Colo.

The 16th CAB stationing action realigns existing assets resulting in an increase of approximately 1,400 new soldiers and 44 helicopters at JBLM. This action for the split-based CAB at JBLM will begin in fiscal 2012 and is expected to be completed by fiscal 2014.

The Army recognizes Alaska as a strategic location and will continue to maintain a significant aviation presence there. This stationing increases the invaluable medical evacuation strength in Alaska by three additional aircraft in fiscal 2013. It also validates the Army’s commitment and support to the aviation infrastructure through military construction programmed for replacement and upgrade of the aviation facilities.

The new combat aviation brigade activation at Fort Carson, Colo., will result in a total growth in Army forces and equipment by approximately 2,700 soldiers and 113 helicopters. Fort Carson establishes the new brigade beginning fiscal 2013 and is expected to be completed by fiscal 2014.

The activation of these brigades will increase the capabilities of the active component of the U.S. Army and increase dwell time for aviation units between deployments in support of overseas contingency operations. These combined force structure actions represent integrated changes that support the Army’s transformation requirements.

Amateur Skywatchers Spot Secret Space Plane

After an intense search, a crew of amateur satellite sleuths has spotted the U.S. Air Force's second X-37B space plane – a robotic spacecraft that launched into orbit March 5.

The mission of the unmanned X-37B space plane, which is known officially as the Orbital Test Vehicle 2 (OTV-2), is shrouded in secrecy. The Boeing-built spacecraft is believed to be involved in reconnaissance — perhaps testing powerful sensors for a new generation of spy satellites. It looks much like a small version of NASA's space shuttles and blasted off from the Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

While its mission is secret, the OTV-2 itself has attracted the eyes of dedicated skywatchers hoping to spot it in orbit just as they saw its predecessor – the first X-37B spacecraft, OTV-1 – during the OTV-1's months-long flight last year.

You can read the rest of this interesting story by clicking here.

And here are the latest orbital elements for OTV-2 the X-37B spacecraft from Ted Molczan via the SEESAT-L newsgroup mentioned in the article on FNC/Space.com.

US Navy P-3C, USAF A-10 and USS Barry Engage Libyan Vessels

Blog Editor Note: Some have asked with the PsyOps broadcasts on 10405.0 kHz by the coalition? Evidently the Libyan Navy is still a threat based on the story below.

USS MOUNT WHITNEY, At Sea (NNS) -- A U.S. Navy P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft, U.S. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt attack aircraft and guided-missile destroyer USS Barry (DDG-52), engaged Libyan Coast Guard vessel Vittoria and two smaller craft March 28.

The vessels were engaged after confirmed reports that Vittoria and accompanying crafts were firing indiscriminately at merchant vessels in the port of Misrata, Libya.

The P-3C fired at Vittoria with AGM-65F Maverick missiles, rendering the 12-meter patrol vessel ineffective and forcing it to be beached after multiple explosions were observed in the vicinity of the port.

Two smaller Libyan craft were fired upon by the A-10 using its 30mm GAU-8/ Avenger cannon, destroying one and forcing the other to be abandoned.

Barry provided situational awareness for the aircraft by managing the airspace and maintaining the maritime picture.

The P-3C, A-10 and Barry are currently supporting operations for Joint Task Force Odyssey Dawn.

Joint Task Force Odyssey Dawn is the U.S. Africa Command task force established to provide operational and tactical command and control of U.S. military forces supporting the international response to the unrest in Libya and enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1973. UNSCR 1973 authorizes all necessary measures to protect civilians in Libya under threat of attack by Qadhafi regime forces.

Coalition Air Operations Take on Gadhafi's Forces

By Jim Garamone, American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON - The coalition struck a number of targets in Libya with air operations flown to protect the Libyan people from Moammar Gadhafi's forces, the director of the Joint Staff said today.

Navy Vice Adm. William E. Gortney briefed Pentagon reporters on the latest developments in the United Nations-ordered operation.

Many strikes went after Gadhafi regime armored forces outside Ajdabiyah, a city south of the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, Gortney said. The coalition also hit more command and control facilities in and around Tripoli and launched 16 more Tomahawk strikes against targets that included Scud missile garrisons in Tripoli and air defense systems around Sabha, he added.

In the last 24 hours, coalition aircraft flew 153 sorties, with 96 of those being strikes. "Slightly more than half of those strike missions were flown by U.S. pilots," the admiral said. Partner nations flew all of the no-fly zone enforcement missions.

NATO has agreed to take on the no-fly zone enforcement mission, and officials at the alliance's headquarters in Belgium named Canadian air force Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard to lead Operation Unified Protector. The operation covers enforcing the U.N.-mandated arms embargo and no-fly zone. Bouchard is stationed in Naples, Italy, at the Allied Joint Force Command.

Gortney said it is possible that NATO may take over the last part of the U.N. mission, which is protecting Libyan civilians from Gadhafi's forces.

Partner nations are taking on more missions, and the division of labor between U.S. and partner nations has evened out, the admiral said. As operations continue, the United States will fly most refueling, surveillance, information operations and jamming missions, he added.

"The coalition is working very hard to make it very hard for Colonel Gadhafi and his troops to kill their own citizens and destroy property," Gortney said. "But that is ... a delicate mission."

The U.N. charged the coalition with protecting the people of Libya, the admiral noted, adding that nothing the coalition can do could put the people at greater risk than the risk they face at the hands of Gadhafi's regime.

"What we must focus on is limiting the regime's ability to inflict the harm by squeezing it and denying it the tools to do so, and we believe we are achieving success in that regard," Gortney said.

Navy Names Littoral Combat Ships Jackson and Montgomery

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced today that the next two Freedom-class littoral combat ships (LCS) to be built in Alabama will be named the USS Jackson and the USS Montgomery.

These two ships are part of a dual block buy of LCS class ships announced by Mabus in December 2010. By procuring both versions of the LCS -- Lockheed Martin's semiplaning monohull and General Dynamic's aluminum trimaran -- the Navy can stabilize the LCS program and the industrial base with an award of 20 ships; increase ship procurement rate to support operational requirements; sustain competition through the program; and enhance foreign military sales opportunities. Both designs meet the Navy's LCS requirement. However, the diversity provided by two designs provides operational flexibility.

The selection of Jackson, designated LCS 6, honors the great state capitol Jackson, Miss. This is the first ship to bear the city's name.

The selection of Montgomery, the capitol of Alabama, designated LCS 8, honors Montgomery, Ala. This is the second ship to bear the city's name.

Jackson and Montgomery will be designed to defeat growing littoral threats and provide access and dominance in the coastal waters. A fast, agile surface combatant, the LCS provides the required war fighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute focused missions close to the shore such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.

Jackson and Montgomery will be 419 feet in length, have a waterline beam of 103 feet, displace approximately 3,000 tons, and will make speed in excess of 40 knots.

Construction of Jackson and Montgomery will be by Austal Shipbuilding in Mobile, Ala.

Additional information about Freedom class Littoral Combat Ships is available online at click here.

Maritime Prepositioning Ships Arrive for Port Visit in Split, Croatia

A roll-on roll-off discharge facility transports Marine Corps equipment between the Military Sealift Command container roll-on roll-off ship USNS 2nd LT John P. By Kim Dixon, Military Sealift Command Public Affairs

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- Two U.S. Navy Maritime Prepositioning Force ships arrived off the coast of Split, Croatia, to conduct routine port visits March 24.

The civilian mariners and U.S. Navy crew members of Military Sealift Command ships USNS 2ND LT John P. Bobo (T-AK 3008) and USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat (T-AK 3016), two of the four ships assigned to Maritime Prepositioning Ship (MPS) Squadron One, will have the opportunity to visit and experience the second largest urban center in Croatia, traditionally considered to be more than 1,700 years old.

Forward deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Atlantic Ocean, MPS Squadron One ships operate in European waters without a permanent homeport, carrying equipment and supplies for rapid delivery to U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe, in major combat operations or other contingencies.

The squadron is commanded by Navy Capt. Michael F. Ott, with an embarked military staff of 11 military personnel and six civilians stationed aboard USNS Bobo. Each ship is crewed by approximately 30 U.S. merchant mariners who work for a private ship operating company under contract to MSC.

"Ships like USNS Bobo and USNS Wheat are prepositioned around the world to speed supplies to crisis areas when the need arises," said Ott.

There are 16 prepositioning ships in three MPS squadrons worldwide, strategically positioning supplies for the U.S. Marine Corps at sea. These supplies include wheeled and tracked vehicles, ammunition, food, water, cargo, hospital equipment, petroleum products and spare parts - ready for rapid delivery ashore when needed.

"We are fortunate to return to Split, Croatia," said Ott. "Visits such as this offer the opportunity to understand each other and bring us closer together."

Earlier information posted as part of this update blog post.

Well it has been a very busy 24 hours plus with all the action in and around Libya. So in this post I will try to summarize what was heard and reported.

I should point out that we had a real good hint that the USAF B-2 bombers were on a Global Power mission yesterday afternoon when we saw the Ethyl tankers on the AR track up in the Canadian maritimes. I can report as of this writing that the Ethyl tankers are up again this morning to get the B-2 boyz back home from their long flight overseas. According to the Pentagon they were the aircraft that bombed the Libyan military airfields. As this is being written, the flight of three is approaching their Ethyl tankers in the Can Maritimes using callsign Fury 23 flight. Heads up NEMilAir guys.

Now to the HF reported on UDXF. The biggest news was a psyops radio reported by our friend Ary Boender in the NL.

Ary reported the following around 0730 UTC:

"6877 kHz : Psychological operations, possibly EC-130J Commando Solo III. Asks Libyan naval officers not to board their ships in AA/EE/FF. Hard to read here in Holland but msg is clear."

There was an EC-130H Compass Call aircraft, callsign Sheen 53, that was in theater so given their mission to "disrupt enemy command and control communications and limits adversary coordination essential for enemy force management," that may have been who Ary and others monitored last night.

An EC-130J Commando Solo from 193SOS has finally popped up in the theater, callsign Steel 74, so let the psyops broadcast begin.

At some point Andrea B recorded jamming on the 6877.0 kHz transmissions and you can hear that at http://www.mediasuk.org/appoggio/jamming_6877.mp3. This is a must hear mp3. You can even hear the transmission form the aircraft telling the Libyan Navy sailors to not leave port, etc.

Nils DK8OK, has also posted an audio file from 6877.0 kHz. "6877 kHz, 20.3.11, 09:00 UTC, in SSB/USB with reduced carrier. Slightly jammed. Calling Libyan seamen to return to port and leave their ships in Arabic, English and French:
„Libyan sailors! Leave your ship immediately! Leave your ... and return to your family or your home. ... forces of violating at United National resolution ... the end of ... in your country. For your own safety: Leave your ship immediately! Do not attempt to jam [?] transmission." Click here for Nils DK8OK audio file.

There are several more audio files posted online and you can find those in messages posted to the UDXF group.

Stay tuned. More as we get or hear it.

Ships Were in Position for Odyssey Dawn, CNO Says

By Jim Garamone, American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- While Operation Odyssey Dawn brewed up quickly, the U.S. Navy already was positioned for operations over Libya, the chief of naval operations (CNO) said March 23.

CNO Adm. Gary Roughead told the Defense Writers Group that having Navy ships and submarines in the Mediterranean Sea enabled a quick response to the order that began Operation Odyssey Dawn.

"The need, for example in the opening rounds, for the Tomahawk strikes, the shooters were already in place," Roughead said. "They were already loaded, and that went off as we expected it would."

Roughead said he is pleased overall with the operation so far. The actions against Libya marked the first time the converted ballistic missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) was used in combat, and basing the coalition's joint task force aboard the USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20) has provided flexibility, he added.

CNO also said he is pleased with the performance of the EA-18G Growler, the Navy's newest electronic warfare aircraft. The five-jet squadron had been flying missions over Iraq, but was quickly moved and began flying missions in support of Operation Odyssey Dawn just 47 hours after recovering from operations over Iraq.

He also praised the tactical recovery of two F-15E Strike Eagle Airmen who ejected over Libya when their jet had mechanical problems. The USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) launched a V-22 Osprey that got in quickly and made the recovery, he said.

"The way it came together, the synchronicity of operations, the involvement and coordination among the different participants [went] quite well," he added.

Roughead said the Navy can continue supporting operations as long as it takes.

"That's what you get when you have a global Navy that's forward all the time," he said. "We don't surge, and we don't ride to the sound of the guns. We're there, and when the guns go off, we're ready to conduct combat operations, or, as you see in Japan, ready to conduct some pretty extensive humanitarian operations."

In the run-up to the operations, the admiral told the group, the Joint Chiefs of Staff deliberated on the military actions that would be required. Roughead said he was particularly concerned about Moammar Gadhafi's integrated air and missile defense system. Though the system was old, he said, "I don't take any of that for granted. If someone is going to put a missile in the air, you don't say, 'Oh, it's an old one, I'll worry about it later.'"

Roughead said logistics was another concern, but the Navy's robust presence in the Mediterranean comes with re-supply ships afloat and depots ashore. The global supply chain has worked well, he said, adding that he anticipates no problem in keeping operations going.

From a funding standpoint, Roughead said operations are not especially costly.

"When you look at the expenses of what we in the Navy incurred, given the fact that we were already there, those costs are 'sunk' for me. I'm already paying for that," he said.

The service did incur additional flying hours, and the Tomahawks will be replaced from the existing inventory, Roughead said. More than 3,200 Tomahawks are in the inventory, and the missiles used in the operation represent "relatively minor increases in cost," he added.
