Russia war games over Ukraine prompt US warning

In a clear warning to Ukraine, Putin on Wednesday ordered massive military exercises involving most of the military units in western Russia according to AP press reports.

On Thursday, as part of the exercises, 90 fighter jets were put on combat alert and were patrolling the border with Ukraine, Russian news agencies quoted the Defense Ministry as saying.

The military also announced measures to tighten security at the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea Fleet on the Crimean peninsula in southeastern Ukraine.
The military maneuvers prompted a sharp rebuke from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who warned Russia that any military intervention in Ukraine would be a "grave mistake."

Two F1 Mirage fighter jets of the Libyan Air Force landed in Malta earlier Monday, after the pilots deserted their home country.

Monday afternoon and evening other air force jets and helicopters are performing bombing raids targeting civilians in the capital Tripoli.

No news about a possible departute of Libyan ruler Gadaffi for a possible exile in Venezuela.

8894 kHz (Algiers/Nouakchott) could be the frequency to watch tonight. Also Santa Maria channels like 8906, 5598 and 3016 kHz.

Pentagon Officials Monitor Protests Overseas

By Karen Parrish, American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON - Defense Department officials are closely watching protests that have flared over recent days in Egypt, Tunisia and Lebanon, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said today.

"These are three separate, fast-moving situations that the secretary and others here in this department, and ... obviously others throughout the government, are monitoring closely as they evolve," Morrell told Pentagon reporters in a briefing here.

The U.S. military relationships with the three countries vary greatly, Morrell said.

"We have no military-to-military relationship with Tunisia, we have a long-standing military-to-military relationship with Egypt, and we have an evolving military-to-military relationship with Lebanon," he said.

Since Syria pulled its forces out of Lebanon in 2006, Morrell said, the United States has pursued a closer military relationship, providing assistance "upwards of $600 million" to Lebanon in that time.

"In the case of Lebanon, we're monitoring the situation as the constitutional process plays out. We will need to see what the final makeup of the Lebanese government looks like before we make any decisions regarding our relationship, including military assistance," he said.

A Hezbollah-controlled government would "obviously have an effect" on the U.S-Lebanon relationship, Morrell said.

"I think [the State Department] should take it from here, in terms of the ultimate impact that may or may not have on military-to-military relationship and financial assistance," he added.

The White House has addressed the protest situation in Egypt at length, Morrell said. A White House statement on Egypt released yesterday urges all parties to refrain from violence.

"We support the universal rights of the Egyptian people, including the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly," the statement reads, in part. "The Egyptian government has an important opportunity to be responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people, and pursue political, economic and social reforms that can improve their lives and help Egypt prosper. The United States is committed to working with Egypt and the Egyptian people to advance these goals."

Defense officials are hosting senior Egyptian military leaders this week for their annual bilateral defense talks, Morrell said.

"That's just an example of how engaged we are with the Egyptians, even as these developments have taken place on the streets of Cairo, and elsewhere," he said.

Hot Spot DXing: Conflict in Georgia (The Country)

Russia and its pro-West neighbour Georgia engaged in fierce fighting on Saturday in the disputed region of South Ossetia. Russia dispatched an armored column into the breakaway enclave of South Ossetia on Friday after Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, launched a surprise offensive to crush separatists. Witnesses said hundreds of civilians were killed. Fighting reportedly raged well into the night with Georgia's interior ministry saying early Saturday that warplanes attacked three Georgian military bases and key facilities for shipping oil to the West.

There are literally hundreds of frequencies that the Russian military can operate on so unless we have some specific monitoring intercepts relating to ths event, I won't be listing them in this article.

I do have an extensive list of Georgian military and border guard freqs. Special thanks to Thomas M. Rösner, DL8AAM, for the GEO Army listings.

Hot Spot DXing: Colombia-Ecuador-Venezuala

Blog Note: You can find additional information on broadcasting from the affected area on our sister blog the Shortwave Central.

Over the weekend, the crisis has continued to escalate in the northern portion of South America. The latest on the wires indicates that Venezuela has closed its border with Colombia as part of a rapidly escalating crisis over the killing of a Colombian FARC rebel chief. The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) - has been waging a four-decade guerrilla war against the government in Bogota, Colombia.

The move comes amid frantic diplomatic maneuvering to quell a rapidly spiraling crisis that threatens to engulf much of South America, after Colombia's weekend cross-border raid on a rebel camp in Ecuador which killed the FARC number two leader Raul Reyes.

Ecuador severed diplomatic ties with Colombia and Venezuela expelled all Colombian diplomats, prompting the 34-member Organization of American States to plan an emergency meeting in hopes of resolving the escalating tensions.

President Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela - a socialist and ideologically sympathetic to the Marxist-inspired FARC, ordered 6000 troops, tanks and aircraft to the border, warning Colombia of "war" if it tried a raid into Venezuelan territory.

While I do not have any material on monitoring the Ecuadorian military, I do have some previously monitored frequency information on the Colombia and Venezuela military. So from the Milcom Monitoring Post files here are some frequencies and nets to watch (all freqs are in kHz).
