HAIFA, Israel (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) arrived in Haifa, Israel for a routine port visit, Sept. 4.
San Antonio's commanding officer, Capt. Randell Dykes, said this visit is a well-deserved break for Sailors and Marines, and for many is the first time they have visited Israel.
"If you've been here, you know what a great country Israel is," said Dykes. "I know our Sailors and Marines will have a great time. They certainly deserve it after all the hard work they've put in on this deployment."
While in Haifa, Sailors and Marines will have the opportunity to explore the city and to experience the rich history and culture of Israel. Tours are being offered to the Sailors and Marines to historic locations while in port.
San Antonio is part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group and, with the embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

Two Amphibious Assault Ships 'Parked Off of Egypt'

WASHINGTON -- As political unrest continues in post-coup Egypt, two amphibious assault ships have moved to the coast there, the commandant of the Marine Corps said Thursday.
The USS Kearsarge and the USS San Antonio “moved up into the Red Sea and parked off of Egypt,” a couple of nights ago, “because we don’t know what’s going to happen,” Gen. James Amos said.

San Antonio Demonstrates Capabilities During Maiden Deployment

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) readies to return to its homeport in Norfolk after completing a seven-month deployment as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG).
The homecoming will mark the end of the maiden deployment for the first San Antonio-class warship, which brought new warfighting capabilities to the stike group.
"We've demonstrated that the LPD 17 platform is very robust with its new features," said Cmdr. Eric Cash, San Antonio's commanding officer. "If you look at the lift capability, command and control, and capacity and facilities to embark a multitude of detachments, you can see how amphibious ships can be utilized from low to high intensity operations."
Thanks to San Antonio's design, embarked Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (26 MEU) were able to carry out their daily routine and shore operations in an efficient manner.
"We were a complete unit, capable of any tasking because of the capacity that San Antonio has for our operations," said Lt. Col. John Giltz, Combat Logistics Battalion 26 commanding officer. "The passageways are much wider for a large number of Marines to move throughout the ship and for transporting vehicles. The flight deck is capable of having multiple aircraft, which makes loading and offloading much faster."
"This deployment has taught us a great deal on how to carry out MEU operations," Giltz added. "From what we've learned on San Antonio's maiden cruise, the LPD-class ships are very capable in independent ship missions."
A number of functions are monitored through the ship's latest feature, the shipwide area network (SWAN).
"SWAN has been a godsend for this ship on this deployment," said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Wendall Bates.
"It has enabled us to man less spaces, and it's a constant watchdog for our systems should anything go wrong, such as broken consoles at an engineering station, navigation issues or problems with the ship's control system."
At the start of the new year, San Antonio was selected to serve as the flagship for the newly-established Combined Task Force (CTF) 151 counter-piracy mission. Fleet Surgical Team 8, from the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), and Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron 3, from the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), embarked San Antonio to enhance CTF-151's capabilities.
"By bringing such a diverse group of forces together, we were able to capitalize on each other's experiences and training, and that allowed us to better prepare for future missions," said Lt. Cmdr. Sean Kearns, San Antonio's executive officer.
"San Antonio surpassed all expectations made by the Iwo Jima ARG," said Lt. Richard Knutson, San Antonio's operations officer. "We demonstrated that this platform is versatile in carrying out operations such as visit, board, search and seizure operations, damage control training and simulated warfare."
Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's former commanding officer, led the ship and its crew out on the maiden deployment and is proud of the crew's accomplishments.
"The crew and embarked Marines faced every challenge and mission head-on," said Kastner. "I think their efforts will go a long way in defining future LPD 17 class deployments."
San Antonio is deployed as part of the Iwo Jima ARG supporting maritime security operations (MSO). MSO help develop security in the maritime environment. From security arises stability that results in global economic prosperity. MSO complements the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.

Helo Squadron's Flexibility Supports Counterpiracy Ops

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- Helicopter Anti-submarine Squadron (HS) 3, attached to Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), is embarked aboard amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) in support of Combined Task Force (CTF) 151's counterpiracy mission.
HS 3's primary role in CTF 151 operations is to provide aerial support with its HH-60H and SH-60F helicopters, which specialize in combat search and rescue, mobility and logistics.
"We present a show of force when flying above any suspected pirate vessels while the boarding teams track them in the [rigid-hull inflatable boats], and we can definitely provide a rescue platform during the operation as well as a show of firepower," said Cmdr. William Cox, HS 3's executive officer.
San Antonio was chosen as the afloat forward staging base (AFSB) for HS 3 because of the ship's many capabilities. Its hangar bay can house two helicopters with plenty of space for maintenance, and its large flight deck allows the squadron to launch four helicopters at the same time if needed.
HS 3 brought everything they needed for sustainment during the mission, such as parts for the helicopters and optimal manning in logistics.
"We had to decide how many of our Sailors we could bring over to San Antonio from Theodore Roosevelt without taking away all the quality of work we provide on the carrier," added Cox.
HS 3 Sailors are enjoying working alongside San Antonio's crew while supporting CTF 151's counterpiracy mission.
"We've never worked with the Marine Corps and Coast Guard, and it's exciting to be in this atmosphere of working with the international community on San Antonio's first deployment," said Cox.
"My Sailors are great people who do a great job for me every day, and we're just happy to be a part of this event."
San Antonio's Air Department provides HS 3 with the manpower it needs to carry out the various CTF 151 operations.
"We provide safe ground support for the aircraft with directing, landing and refueling," said Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) Richard Romious, the air department's leading chief petty officer. "Our handlers make sure the helicopters are chocked and chained to the hangar or flight deck, and our fuels personnel provide quality assurance through our refueling their craft."
San Antonio's crew spent weeks making the necessary changes and configurations to prepare the ship for its current mission. These changes allowed several spaces to be available for use by the various embarked units, including HS 3.
"We have configured several of the ship's spaces so that the equipment and resources available are tailored to the specific missions that the CTF 151 staff, along with the help of San Antonio's personnel, will be planning and executing," said Lt. Cmdr. Sean Kearns, San Antonio's executive officer.
Although three helicopters from the squadron are currently part of CTF 151, the rest of the squadron is still aboard the aircraft carrier supporting maritime security operations and Operation Enduring Freedom in the North Arabian Sea.

San Antonio Showcases Air Capabilities with Marine ACE Detachment

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM) 264 Aviation Combat Element (ACE) detachment recently embarked amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) to conduct a variety of training operations with the ship's air department.
The 75 Marines assigned to the ACE detachment, stationed out of Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., disembarked from the multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) to test their skills in defensive postures and ordnance loading operations, and to showcase the aviation capabilities of the new San Antonio-class ship.
"The LPD class has the capabilities to support an aviation detachment aboard, and we were here to exercise the motions of executing air operations that can be used in future missions," said Capt. Peter Herrmann, ACE action officer.
"Normally we are the ready deck to support Iwo Jima when the ship is at flight operations and, on occasion, we will fly and perform deck landing qualifications," said Chief Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) (AW) Thomas Cline, San Antonio's Air Department leading chief petty officer.
The mission of San Antonio's aviation boatswain's mates (handling) was to serve as safety directors while ACE performed 48 mishap-free aircraft moves to and from the hangar bay to the ship's flight deck.
Refueling the helicopters safely was another top priority for San Antonio's Air Department and for the aviation boatswain's mate (fuel) Sailors.
"We refueled the helicopters 40 times in one week in order to keep ACE in the air," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Fuel) 1st Class (AW) Jerome Fuda.
Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's commanding officer, commented on the air department's performance.
"Our air department is truly flexing their operational muscle," said Kastner. "We are conducting a lot of flight operations and aircraft handling evolutions, so they are getting a lot of experience."
Cline is proud of his departments' achievements.
"We demonstrated our air capabilities by launching the ACE's aircraft in an environment of amphibious ships deploying Marines," added Cline. "San Antonio is even capable of going off on its own with an embarked detachment, and perform missions independently. This was the first time we had a Marine detachment with us, and we look forward to the opportunity of working with them again in the future."
ACE departed with an enhanced appreciation for the professionalism of San Antonio's Sailors and Marines.
"San Antonio has been a very hospitable place for us, and the Sailors and Marines have been very supportive of our operations," added Herrmann.

San Antonio Makes Inaugural Transit Through Suez Canal

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) made its first transit through the Suez Canal as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group Sept. 23.
San Antonio's first transit through the Suez Canal marked its entry into the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
"As we enter the Fifth Fleet area of operations, we will conduct Maritime Security Operations, maritime infrastructure protection and will work to deter destabilizing activities in order to help create a lawful maritime order," said Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's commanding officer.
San Antonio relied on the skill and expertise of its Sailors to successfully maneuver the Suez Canal's navigational challenges.
"As the first of the class making the transit, we are figuratively in uncharted waters," said Kastner. "However, we have plenty of experience, knowledge and resourcefulness in the crew, which made for a smooth transit."
One of the challenges of the transit was the narrow passage San Antonio had to navigate.
"The path through the Suez is only 119 meters wide with water as deep as 14.8 meters," said Lt. j. g. Kathleen Friel, San Antonio's navigator. "Therefore, the turns made by the helmsman need to be precise when adjusting course."

San Antonio's first transit through the Suez Canal marked its entry into the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
"As we enter the Fifth Fleet area of operations, we will conduct Maritime Security Operations, maritime infrastructure protection and will work to deter destabilizing activities in order to help create a lawful maritime order," said Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's commanding officer.
San Antonio relied on the skill and expertise of its Sailors to successfully maneuver the Suez Canal's navigational challenges.
"As the first of the class making the transit, we are figuratively in uncharted waters," said Kastner. "However, we have plenty of experience, knowledge and resourcefulness in the crew, which made for a smooth transit."
One of the challenges of the transit was the narrow passage San Antonio had to navigate.
"The path through the Suez is only 119 meters wide with water as deep as 14.8 meters," said Lt. j. g. Kathleen Friel, San Antonio's navigator. "Therefore, the turns made by the helmsman need to be precise when adjusting course."
San Antonio is deployed as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group supporting maritime security operations (MSO) in the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet area of operations. MSO help develop security in the maritime environment. From security arises stability that results in global economic prosperity. MSO complements the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.

San Antonio Takes New Technology to Sea

The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) deployed Aug. 28 as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG), marking the first deployment of a ship in the technologically advanced San Antonio class of warships.
The deployment introduces new technology and capabilities never before seen in any ESG. One example of this technology is the shipwide area network (SWAN).
"SWAN is the first network to be the backbone of vital components of the ship," said Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Wendall Bates.
"Engineering, navigation and steering all run through SWAN, allowing Sailors to monitor all the systems in a much faster and reliable way."
Communications with other ships has always been key to the Navy's success. San Antonio has taken communications to the next level.
"Our cooperative engagement capability allows us to interact with fellow ships underway," said Fire Controlman 1st Class (SW/AW) Kevin Sanders, combat systems leading petty officer.
"By seeing what other ships see through our radars, we can see targets far ahead and either intercept them ourselves or pass along orders for our allies to intercept."
Targeting surface threats with weapons has also benefited from the new technology.
"San Antonio is the first class of ship to have an MK-46 30mm gun weapon system," said Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's commanding officer. "It is a very effective anti-surface weapon with specific daytime and nighttime modes."
Another force protection measure added to the transport dock ship is San Antonio's arsenal of small boats.
"Our collection of small boats makes both Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) operations and visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) operations easier with increased capability and flexibility," explained Kastner.
Other San Antonio design features make day-to-day life more comfortable for the Sailors, while also increasing efficiency.
The engineers aboard keep much cooler thanks to unmanned engine rooms. This is possible due to the engineering control system (ECS).
"ECS is a PC-based system that provides remote monitoring and control of the propulsion, fuel, electrical, auxiliary, damage control, and ballast systems," said Kastner.
San Antonio can also serve as a small-scale hospital ship, and boasts a state-of-the-art medical department that is equipped to provide the highest quality of care with the inclusion of systems like Medical Web.
"San Antonio is designed as a secondary casualty receiving ship with an in-house care facility, complete with an operating room, capable of caring for 24 intensive care patients," said Kastner. "Additionally, Medical Web allows the medical team to transfer digital X-ray images for consultation at large, to shore-based hospitals."
The design of the ship has also made moving supplies throughout the ship less laborious.
"The ship's design places the elevators in front of the store rooms, allowing for easy transfer of stores while other ships often need to snake around the ship to get the stores where they need to go," stated Kastner.
A deployment is an opportune time to work on qualifications and further in-rate knowledge. San Antonio's Total Ship Training System provides shipwide access to computer-based lessons.
"This Total Ship Training System offers everybody the opportunity to train on any computer aboard on various topics ranging from rate specific training, to basic damage control courses," continued Kastner.
Ultimately, San Antonio was designed with one predominant focus: the Marines and supporting their mission.
"LPD-17 provides 23,000 square feet of vehicle space and wider passage ways for debarkation and embarkation," said Marine Chief Warrant Officer Two Anthonie Scott.
"This allows the ship and the Marines to perform independent operations, while the rest of the strike group works other missions. This is the future of amphibious shipping, and the Navy-Marine Corps team will only benefit from its existence."
"These systems, when combined together, will deliver to the Navy the next generation of warships," concluded Kastner.

San Antonio Begins Its Maiden Deployment

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio (LPD 17) deployed from its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk Aug. 28 as part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG).
San Antonio's departure marks its first deployment since it's commissioning Jan. 14, 2006 and the first deployment of a San Antonio-class amphibious ship.
"It is truly an honor and privilege to be part of LPD 17's maiden deployment," said Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio's commanding officer. "When I look back at the accomplishments and effort by the crew getting the first ship in the San Antonio-class warship ready, I am proud and humbled at the same time."
San Antonio provides unique capabilities that have never been incorporated into any previously-deployed ESG.
"The operational flexibility of our strike group is greatly enhanced by San Antonio's capabilities," said Capt. Brian T. Smith, commander, Iwo Jima ESG. "Its multi-functional design supports technological advances in landing craft, aircraft and amphibious vehicles. The ship has a state-of-the-art command and control suite, more than double the storage space of the ships it replaces and advanced survivability features that enhance its ability to operate in the littoral environment."
This deployment is not only the first for San Antonio but the first for many of the ship's Sailors as well.
"It's ironic that my first deployment is the first for the San Antonio also," said Interior Communication's Specialist 3rd Class Thomas Quintavalle. "I've waited for this moment for a long time -- to visit places in the world that I dreamed of seeing as a kid."
The path to getting San Antonio prepared for her maiden voyage was scattered with a variety of technical challenges. The ship's departure from Norfolk is evidence of the dedicated effort of the crew and provides a sense of accomplishment for its Sailors.
"I wanted to help see this ship get underway to show that the blood, sweat and tears from its crew - both past and present - have paid off," said Hull Maintenance Technician 1st Class (SW) Walt Douglas, executive department leading petty officer.
The sense of accomplishment is shared by Smith.
"San Antonio and its Sailors are ready," he said. "The ship demonstrated flawless execution of procedures for getting underway and conducted a highly efficient onload of Marines and their equipment. I fully expect to see the same excellence from San Antonio and its crew throughout deployment."

San Antonio Preps for Deployment During JTFEX

USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- Sailors aboard the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17) are participating in Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) 08-4 off the U.S. eastern seaboard July 21-31.
JTFEX 08-4 serves as a ready-for-deployment certification event for the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group. It evaluates how ships work together in different tactical situations and prepares Sailors for deployment.
"JTFEX is scenario driven," said Cmdr. Kurt Kastner, San Antonio commanding officer. "It is as close to live action as we can get in a training environment."
The scenarios during JTFEX are scripted and designed to test the responses by crew members and evaluate decisions made by their leadership.
"These scenarios range from small boat boardings to communications with unidentified ships; it tests our ability to respond," said Lt. j.g. Greg Smith, assistant operations officer.
Sailors aboard San Antonio completed fleet synthetic training and composite unit training exercise (COMPTUEX) prior to participating in JTFEX.
"COMPTUEX helped us prepare for JTFEX and because of fleet synthetic training, we were able to have pier-side exercises with the other ships in our strike group," said Fire Controlman 1st Class (SW/AW) Kevin Sanders, combat systems leading petty officer.
"We held classes for the crew so they could be trained for various duties, including standing watch and visit, board, search and seizure exercises."
Smith said he is confident in the crew members' ability to do their jobs efficiently and set the standard for other ships in the fleet.
"The crew has trained long and hard for JTFEX, and we look forward to seeing positive results."
