The Department of Defense announced today the decision to inactivate and partially return the Monte Orlando Compound, Gaeta, Italy. The pier side of the facility known as Fleet Landing, on Italian Navy Base Gaeta, will remain.
This inactivation will affect 140 military, five U.S. civilians, 23 local national employees, and 100 U.S. family members. The Navy will begin the process of returning the site affected by this decision to the host nation. Current annual operating costs for these sites are approximately $13.6 million
The United States coordinated this action with host nation officials and will return the compound to the host nation in 2009.
As with all stationing actions, the United States has coordinated with host nation officials prior to this announcement.
