F-22 Raptor air superiority fighters at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va., returned to flight earlier today after a weeklong grounding according to an online article at AirForce Times.
“The 1st Fighter Wing has resumed flying operations at Langley AFB as of 0800 this morning,” said Air Combat Command spokesman Miles Brown.
Wing commander Col. Kevin Robbins had ordered the grounding on Oct. 20 after one of the unit’s pilots suffered from an in-flight incident with symptoms resembling hypoxia.
On Monday, 3rd Wing commander Col. Dirk Smith, who also had grounded his two squadrons of F-22s at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska following the incident at Langley, lifted a flight ban on his aircraft. The first Raptors took off at the Alaska base Monday morning.
F-22 pilots at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, flew their regular schedule throughout the grounding at Langley, as did aviators at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.; Nellis AFB, Nevada; and Holloman AFB, New Mexico.

T-38 arrives to supplement F-22 training

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. (AFNS) -- Following a successful test run in March 2010 and approval by Air Combat Command officials, the first of several T-38 Talons from Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., arrived here April 1 for the beginning of the 1st Operations Group's T-38 Adversary Air Program.
Col. Matt Molloy, the 1st Fighter Wing's commander, and Col. Kevin Mastin, the 1st FW's vice commander, escorted the aircraft to here to bolster F-22 Raptor training using cost-effective training exercises and supplementing flight training for future pilots.
Following the completion of an environmental survey in the fall, the planes will be reassigned permanently to the 1st FW. Wing officials expect to receive the remaining six T-38s gradually over the coming months.
According to Lt. Col. Derek Wyler, the 1st OG Adversary Air Program lead, the program provides adversary support for training scenarios. The T-38s will serve in a "red air," or enemy capacity, while F-22s will fly as "blue air," or friendly forces. Each T-38 can be flown as often as three times daily to provide adversary support at a fraction of the cost of launching a Raptor.
The reduction of flying time on the Raptor combined with the lower operating cost of the T-38s will save the wing considerable money, officials said.
"The reduction in the Air Force's inventory of fourth-generation fighters (F-15s) placed an increased emphasis on finding a suitable, yet cost-effective platform to keep F-22 pilots current with combat readiness training," Colonel Wyler explained. "This T-38 program is a very economical solution to a difficult problem."
In addition, the T-38s serve as proficiency trainers for F-22 pilots as the aircraft is difficult to detect when airborne.
"This will sharpen the talons of the Raptor pilots," Colonel Molloy said. "The T-38 is small, nimble and difficult to find in the air. Combine that with a low radar cross-section and low electromagnetic emissions, and this plane will punish a Raptor pilot's mistakes if they make them."
These processes will take time to build and perfect, but the arrival of the T-38 is the first step in bringing the project to fruition.
"This is the culmination of a long road," Colonel Wyler said. "It took a lot of work by a whole lot of people to bring these planes here. Finally getting an airplane on the ramp at Langley is a big event."

Milcom Intel Report - 1FW Langley ORE
For readers in the mid-Atlantic, starting this week through Monday, August 31, 2009, the 1FW out of Langley will be conducting an Operational Readiness Exercise (ORE).
LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. -- The 1st Fighter Wing will participate in a Phase 1 Operational Readiness Exercise Aug. 26 and 27, designed to establish Langley's expeditionary readiness and efficiency in deploying Airmen.
More than 2,500 Airmen will be involved in the exercise, which will measure the 1 FW's capabilities on graded, step-by-step guidelines which involve preparing aircraft, cargo and Airmen to deploy seamlessly within an established period of time.
"The operational readiness exercise in August is essential to ensure we are primed and prepared for deployment operations," said Col. Matt Molloy, 1 FW Commander. "During this exercise, we will provide our Airmen with opportunities to apply their training, develop new skills and execute the Air Force's mission to fly, fight and win."
The exercise begins with maintainers preparing planes for action by determining capacity, organizing what cargo goes where and readying the aircraft to take Airmen and supplies to an area of responsibility. While maintenance crews work to ensure aircraft readiness, loadmasters plan what cargo goes on a plane and how it is organized.
The planes are then inspected in accordance with exercise standards to ensure they are properly prepared for deployment.
Airmen begin processing through a deployment line which culminates in them boarding the prepared aircraft.
"Medical records, luggage and certifications are all checked in line," said Neale Cummings, 1 FW Exercise Program Manager. "Everything needs to be in order for the process to go smoothly."
Of the Airmen participating, approximately 800 are on "deployable status," which indicates that they will be deploying in the exercise. The remaining personnel will support and facilitate the flow of the operation.
"Everyone needs to put forth maximum effort, including non-deployable Airmen," said Mr. Cummings. "Those who aren't leaving on the plane make as much of an impact as those who are."
This ORE is a Phase One exercise, which tests the preparedness in ramping up and deploying, said Mr. Cummings.
During the exercise, drivers should expect changes in the flow of traffic around base. Security is heightened with increases in force protection condition levels, and some buildings will require increased protection. Part of increased security includes widened building perimeters, which may displace some parking spots. (For instance, in FPCON level Bravo, vehicles need to be at least 82 feet away from essential buildings.)
"Security forces will be out working at gates and on roads, so we anticipate the effects on drivers to be held to a minimum," said Mr. Cummings.
Mr. Cummings said Airmen can prepare for the exercise by getting their affairs are in order, which will expedite the process for everyone. Airmen are encouraged to make sure their vaccinations are up-to-date, all paperwork is completed and bags are packed correctly with all essential items included, such as uniforms and toiletries.
"The more prepared Airmen are before they get in the line, the better we will perform in the exercise," said Mr. Cummings. "The whole point of the inspection is to ensure we're ready to go at a moment's notice, whenever we're needed."
Mr. Cummings added that with diligence and preparation, the graded inspection in February 2010 will be a complete success.
"If Airmen treat this like a real deployment, we will have no problem scoring high marks," he said.

F-22s at Langley receive FOC status

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. (AFPN) -- F-22 Raptors here reached full operational capability Dec. 12, said Gen. John D.W. Corley, the commander of Air Combat Command.
The announcement officially makes Langley's F-22 squadrons combat ready.
FOC for the F-22 means the aircraft are now ready for global engagement, said Lt. Col. Mark Hansen, the Air Combat Command F-22 integration officer.
"Crews are now (fully) organized, trained, equipped and ready for the joint fight," he said.
Since the F-22s reached initial operational capability two years ago, the 1st Fighter Wing and the Air National Guard's 192nd Fighter Wing have dedicated time and resources into finding how to best use and maintain the world's most advanced fighter. The fighter has deployed and trained across the world to define and refine its capabilities and tactics.
The 1st FW has been training for the wartime mission since the F-22 went IOC, said Brig. Gen. Mark A. Barrett, the 1st FW commander. Langley AFB's F-22s were declared IOC in December 2005, making them capable of some combat operations such as homeland defense.
"We are available to be tasked at any time, to do whatever our nation requires," General Barrett said. The 1st and 192nd Fighter Wings will continue to baseline the F-22 so the rest of the fleet can learn from their experience, he said.
Even though the F-22 has reached FOC, Airmen at Langley AFB will continue training to get better every day, said Col. Jay Pearsall, the 192nd FW commander.
"There's no change in training," he said. "Everybody is working hard, and we're ready to go to war, (on) deployments or on exercises."
The F-22's unique combination of stealth, speed, agility, precision and situational awareness, combined with air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities, gives the airframe numerous advantages over any potential adversary.
