Turmoil in Egypt - Civilian/Military Aero Frequencies

As indicated in two articles on the Shortwave Central Blog -  Egypt in Turmoil and Egypt in Turmoil - Monitoring Egyptian Radio via the Internet , Egypt is in nearly complete  collapse. Below I have compiled a list of Cairo area airports (military and civilian) as well as the Cairo Air Control Center VHF and HF frequencies. Cairo Radio on the AFI MWARA frequencies listed below is widely heard worldwide controlling aircraft within the Cairo FIR.

Black Sea Fleet participation in Exercise "Kavkaz-2009"

Following extract taken from the Russian Armed Forces daily Red Star. Translated and submitted for interest and information by Old Crow. Date of article: 25 June 2009.

Preparations by a large detachment of Black Sea warships which are to participate in Exercise Kavkaz-2009 (Caucasus-2009) are nearing completion. From the Sevastopol' Order of Nakhimov Rocket Cutter Brigade, commanded by Captain 1st Rank Yurij Zemskij, the Air Cushion Missile Ship Bora, the Small Missile Ship Mirage and two Rocket Cutters under the command of Captains 3rd Rank Igor'Vorob'ev and Vadim Lopatko will be taking part. In addition, three Large Landing Ships (BDK) from the Landing Ship Brigade commanded by Captain 1st Rank Oleg Ignasyuk will also participate. These are the BDK Yamal under the command of Captain 2nd Rank Aleksandr Kononenko, the Novocherkassk under the command of Captain 2nd Rank Roman Kotlyarov and the Nikolaj Fil'chenkov commanded by Captain 3rd Rank Evgenij Myasoedov.

I have the following update according to a piece published on wordpress.com:

Russia's defence ministry has announced that the Kavkaz-2009 military exercises will be held in the North Caucasus from June 29 until July 6. The exercises will involve more than 8,500 personnel, up to 200 battle tanks, 450 armoured vehicles and some 250 artillery systems of various types, the independent Georgian news and information service Civil.ge reports.

This appears to be more than just a naval exercise. According to an ITAR-TASS news agency release, all brigades in Russia's North Caucasus military district are to participate in the Kavkaz-2009 military maneuvers.

What I find real interesting is at the moment, the armies of 12 NATO countries are taking part in the Cooperative Longbow 09/Cooperative Lancer 09 war games in Georgia. These military drills close to Russian borders have resulted in numerous protests from top Russian officials.

Raduga/Globus mil communication satellite launched

On December 9, 2007 Russia successfully launched a Proton-M rocket from the launch pad No. 24 of the launch complex No. 81 of the Baykonur launch site. The launch took place at 03:16 MSK (00:16 UTC). The rocket, which was equipped with a Briz-M upper stage, deployed the satellite on an intermediate orbit with inclination of about 49 degrees. The satellite, which has not yet received official designation, appears to be a military communication relay satellite of the Globus-1/Raduga-1 class that will be eventually moved to a geosynchronous orbit. The satellite was given an international designation 2007-058A and the NORAD number 32373.

Satellites of this class normally receive a Raduga designation, so it is expected to become Raduga 1-8 (although it still may get "Cosmos" designation - in 2004 its predecessor, Raduga 1-7, was briefly designated as Cosmos).

The satellite will join two other active Raduga/Globus satellites - Raduga 1-5 (26477, launched on 28 August 2000, deployed in 45E) and Raduga 1-7 (28194, 27 March 2004, 85E). Raduga 1-4 (25642, 28 February 1999, 35E) ended its operations in November 2005, and Raduga 1-6 (26936, 6 October 2001, 70E) – in February 2006.

It should be noted that although it was officially announced that this launch was carried out “in the interest of the Ministry of Defense”, it was not included in the list of military launches for 2007 that were discussed in December 2006 and January 2007. Information about the launch became public only in October 2007. UPDATE 09/12/07: Space Forces representative was quoted as saying that the satelltie was given an official designation Cosmos-2434. According to the Space Forces, the launch is part of a flight test program of a new type of satellites.
