Stennis Returns to Sea for Squadron Carrier Qualifications

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Will Tyndall, USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Public Affairs

USS JOHN C. STENNIS, At Sea (NNS) -- USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) returned to sea March 12 to begin fleet replacement squadron carrier qualifications (FRSCQ) and to perform a major ammunition offload.

Carrier qualifications allow newly trained pilots to gain experience landing aboard a carrier in assigned tactical aircraft.

Each pilot is tasked with 12 day arrested landings and six night landings, as well as "touch-and-goes," where aircraft land and take off again without catching an arresting cable.

"What's different from fleet operations is, it's continuous flight ops (operations)," said Cmdr. Shelby Stratton, Stennis' air boss. "We are recovering aircraft and launching continuously, so the pattern is always full."

The 29 fleet replacement squadron pilots are from the "Flying Eagles" of Strike Fighter Squadron VFA 122, the "Sharpshooters" of Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron VMFAT 101 and the "Vikings" of Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ 129. Collectively, they are expected to perform 96 hours of flight operations consisting of 570 arrested landings, a third of which will be at night.

"It's one of the more difficult and taxing things we ask of the flight deck [crews], because it's just continuous flight operations," said Stratton. "It's going to be long 12 hour days with two hour breaks in the middle, then get up and do it again."

After the completion of FRSCQ, Stennis will conduct an ordnance offload prior to returning to its homeport of Bremerton, Wash.

The ordnance offload is scheduled to span three days with Stennis's crew moving 2.5 million pounds of ordnance with 1,300 total lifts by connected and vertical replenishment.

"Even though it's hard work everyone is happy to do it, because it's the end of this cruise and surge period," said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class (AW) Jason Homchick.

Stennis is the surge-ready carrier on the west coast and vital in performing fleet replacement squadron pilot qualifications. Once the qualifications and ammunition offload are complete, the ship will finalize preparations for a planned incremental availability maintenance period.

Freedom Achieves Third Caribbean Drug Seizure

USS FREEDOM, At Sea (NNS) -- The littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1) achieved its third drug seizure March 11, disrupting a high-speed "go-fast" vessel and recovering 2 1/4 tons of cocaine during counter-illicit trafficking (CIT) operations in U.S. 4th Fleet's Area of Responsibility.

While patrolling with embarked Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 22, the Litorral Combat Ship Surface Warfare Mission Package and U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment, Freedom detected a suspected drug vessel and began pursuit at high speed.

Freedom deployed a response team of Sailors and Coast Guardsmen to intercept the vessel, which jettisoned its illicit cargo in the southern Caribbean Sea.

An MH-60S Sea Hawk from Freedom forced the go-fast to beach itself. Local officials later confiscated the vessel.

The Navy-Coast Guard response team recovered 72 bales of cocaine, weighing 2,127 kilos (4,680 pounds), from the water.

Freedom's third successful drug interdiction was made possible by the coordinated actions of the Navy, U.S. Coast Guard District 7 and Joint Interagency Task Force-South (JIATF-S).

During its first two successful CIT seizures in the Caribbean, Feb. 22 and March 3, Freedom seized a total of one "go-fast" vessel, five suspects and more than 1,700 kilos of cocaine.

Freedom, which will be homeported in San Diego, is currently on its maiden deployment in the Caribbean and the coasts of Central and South America under the operational control of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet. Freedom is conducting CIT operations in support of JIATF-S, U.S. Southern Command and Coast Guard District 7.

Wright-Patterson’s C-5 cargo planes to be replaced by C-17s

from the Dayton Daily News By John Nolan, Staff Writer

The Air Force plans to retire the aging, massive C-5 Galaxy cargo aircraft assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and replace them with newer C-17 cargo transport planes sometime between Oct. 1, 2010, and Sept. 30, 2012.

The 10 C-5s are to be replaced with eight C-17s, the Air Force said Friday, March 12. Maj. Cynthia Harris, a spokeswoman, said she did not have more precise dates for when the replacements will take place.

The 445th Airlift Wing, an Air Force Reserve unit, flies the planes several times a week from Wright-Patterson to carry munitions, weapons, airmen’s belongings and other cargo from the United States to international destinations in support of the global war on terror.

Reservists also often fly the planes in the Dayton area during pilot training runs.

The Air Force has seen rapidly increasing costs for modernizing its more than 100 C-5 planes system-wide, including replacing or overhauling their engines and navigation systems.

The oldest C-5s date to between 1969 and 1980. The C-17s date to the 1980s and 1990s.

The noisy C-5s are among the largest aircraft in the world. Their massive cargo interiors can carry up to 270,000 pounds of cargo, including tanks and helicopters.

USS Connecticut Returns from Deployment

By Mass Communications Specialist Petty Officer 2nd Class (SW/AW) Gretchen Albrecht

BANGOR, Wash. (NNS) -- Sailors aboard the USS Connecticut (SSN 22) returned to Bremerton, Wash., March 10, after successfully completing a six month deployment.

Family members gathered together on the pier to welcome their loved ones home, and for some the moment was even more special due to the birth of a child during the deployment.

"I am very excited for Charlie to meet his dad for the first time," said Kaitlyn Mandigo. "He was born 10 hours after the boat deployed so it has been hard, but it will be so nice to be a family again."

Many Sailors are glad to be home and are looking forward to some well-deserved time off with their families.

"It was really hard being away from my family and not being there for the birth of my daughter," said Lt. Cmdr. Jared Severson, Connecticut Engineering Officer. "With God's help we succeeded and made it home safely. I am looking forward to spending time with my family and getting to know my little girl."

Connecticut successfully completed two missions and one major inspection, and conducted liberty port calls in the Philippines, Guam, and Japan.

Freedom Intercepts Drug Vessel In Caribbean, Makes Second Narcotics Seizure

ABOARD USS FREEDOM, At Sea (NNS) -- The littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1), conducting counter-illicit trafficking (CIT) operations in the U.S. 4th Fleet area of focus, intercepted and captured a high-speed "go-fast" vessel carrying more than 1 1/2 tons of cocaine on March 3.

The late-night seizure of the "go-fast," its illicit cargo and five suspected drug smugglers was the second narcotics seizure in 10 days for Freedom and its embarked Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 22, LCS Surface Warfare Mission Package and U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET). It also marked Freedom's first apprehension of personnel suspected of narcotics trafficking and their vessel.

Freedom was on routine patrol when it intercepted a suspected drug vessel, and launched an MH-60S. The "go-fast" attempted to elude the MH-60S, but Freedom closed on the vessel and intercepted it, forcing the suspects to stop. Freedom then launched a response team of Sailors and Coast Guardsmen to apprehend the suspects and secure the vessel and its illegal cargo.

A search of the vessel yielded 51 bales of cocaine weighing 1,506 kilos (3,315 pounds), all seized by the LEDET as evidence in preparation for possible criminal prosecution. The five suspects were taken into custody aboard Freedom.

The coordinated actions of the Navy, Coast Guard and JIATF-S were instrumental to the successful interdiction of narcotics.

Freedom's first CIT seizure came on Feb. 22, when it disrupted a high-speed "go-fast" vessel and recovered more than a quarter of a ton of cocaine from the western Caribbean Sea.

Freedom, which will be homeported in San Diego, is currently on its maiden deployment in the Caribbean and the coasts of Central and South America under the operational control of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO)/U.S. 4th Fleet. Freedom is conducting CIT operations in support of JIATF-S, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and U.S. Coast Guard District Seven.

USS Essex Participates in Balikatan 2010

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (SW/AW) Mark R. Alvarez, USS Essex Public Affairs

USS ESSEX, At sea (NNS) -- The forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) began participating in exercise Balikatan 2010 (BK 10) March 9 in the Republic of the Philippines and its surrounding waters.

Balikatan, an annual Philippine-U.S. bilateral military humanitarian assistance and training exercise, will take place in the Philippines March 9-19.

"Balikatan is a great opportunity to conduct training that is vital to maintaining readiness and interoperability between the U.S. and Philippine military forces," said Capt. Troy Hart, Essex's commanding officer. "It's a valuable exercise not just militarily, but also in terms of preparation for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations."

During the exercise, Essex Sailors will work with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to conduct humanitarian and civic assistance events, including multiple medical, dental, veterinary and engineering projects ashore. This part of BK 10 is designed to compliment reconstruction efforts done in the wake of typhoons that devastated part of the Philippines in 2009. Sailors and Marines will also work with their Filipino counterparts to conduct field-training exercises and various cross-training events.

To prepare for BK 10, Essex and Assault Craft Unit 1 off-loaded support personnel assigned to the 31st MEU's Aviation Combat Element and dozens of vehicles and ground personnel March 8 at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. In addition, Essex hosted a group of Filipino service members during the week leading up to the exercise to help with planning and familiarization of the ship and its capabilities.

"It has always been a pleasure and privilege working alongside the friendly and accommodating U.S. Sailors and Marines," said Philippine Navy Capt. Virme P. Torralba. "They are very professional and willing to share their knowledge and expertise."

Exercise BK 10 is the 26th in the series of these exercises. The term "balikatan" is a Tagalog word that means "shoulder-to-shoulder" and characterizes the philosophy and intent of the exercise.

"It's truly an appropriate title because one of the most important things we can do is to work side-by-side with our partner nations," said Capt. Mark Weber, commander of Amphibious Squadron 11. "Exercises like Balikatan really allow us to build relationships and develop cohesion with our allies as we work toward the common goal of peace and stability throughout the Pacific region."

Essex, commanded by Capt. Troy Hart, is part of the forward-deployed Essex Amphibious Ready Group and is currently conducting spring patrol in the Western Pacific.

China PLA officer urges challenging U.S. dominance

Blog Editor Note: Not only does China have the world's largest shortwave broadcaster, but Asia is the world's hotbed of shortwave broadcast activity. Advanced shortwave broadcast listeners who monitor the world's hot spots need to keep a listening watch on Asia, specifically China and North Korea.

Reuters article by Chris Buckley

BEIJING (Reuters) - China should build the world's strongest military and move swiftly to topple the United States as the global "champion," a senior Chinese PLA officer says in a new book reflecting swelling nationalist ambitions.

The call for China to abandon modesty about its global goals and "sprint to become world number one" comes from a People's Liberation Army (PLA) Senior Colonel, Liu Mingfu, who warns that his nation's ascent will alarm Washington, risking war despite Beijing's hopes for a "peaceful rise."

"China's big goal in the 21st century is to become world number one, the top power," Liu writes in his newly published Chinese-language book, The China Dream.

"If China in the 21st century cannot become world number one, cannot become the top power, then inevitably it will become a straggler that is cast aside," writes Liu, a professor at the elite National Defense University, which trains rising officers.

His 303-page book stands out for its boldness even in a recent chorus of strident Chinese voices demanding a hard shove back against Washington over trade, Tibet, human rights, and arms sales to Taiwan, the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own.

USS Dewey Commissioned at Seal Beach

SEAL BEACH, Calif. (NNS) -- USS Dewey (DDG105) was formally commissioned today in a ceremony on Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, marking the first time a warship has been commissioned in the Orange County city.

The new destroyer honors Adm. George Dewey (1837-1917) who commanded the Asiatic Station from the cruiser Olympia. Shortly after the onset of the Spanish-American War, Dewey led his squadron of warships into Manila Bay on April 30, 1898. The next morning, his squadron destroyed the Spanish fleet in only two hours without a single American loss. A widely popular hero of his day, Dewey was commissioned admiral of the Navy in March 1903. Two previous ships have proudly carried his name.

Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the event's principal speaker, addressed the new ship's crew and called on them to provide leadership and dedication to each other and the mission.

"Let you be guided by that sense of duty which knows not the timidity of those who stay silent when they see something wrong," Mullen said. "And let you be inspired by the strength and the fortitude of your families whose high expectations of your conduct are—or should be—exceeded only by those you hold for yourselves."

Dewey is the 55th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. The ship will be able to conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management, to sea control and power projection. Dewey will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously and contains a myriad of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime warfare in keeping with "A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower," which postures the sea services to apply maritime power to protect U.S. vital interests in an increasingly interconnected and uncertain world.

Mrs. Deborah Mullen, the ship's sponsor, culminated the ceremony with the traditional order to "Man our ship and bring her to life!" emphasizing that the ship is truly alive with the Sailors that are serving now and will serve on Dewey in the future.

Cmdr. Warren Buller, of Concord, Mass., is the first commanding officer of the ship and leads the crew of 276 officers and enlisted personnel. He was proud to see this day come, marking the beginning of the ship's life and pointed to the ship's flag flying from the yardarm with the echoing Adm. Dewey's exhortation "Fight" in Navy blue on a field of gold above four white stars.

"Our command's philosophy; fight the ship, fight for your people and know why you fight for the country," Buller said. "We are ready to join the fleet, we are ready to fight."

The 9,200-ton Dewey was built by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. The ship is 509 feet in length, has a waterline beam of 59 feet, and a navigational draft of 31 feet. Four gas turbine engines will power the ship to speeds in excess of 30 knots.

Dewey, her crew and their families will call San Diego home after commissioning.
