Farewell to the Combat Talon

DUKE FIELD -- Dozens of people gathered Friday morning to say farewell to a piece of Air Force history.
The 919th Special Operations Wing sent one of its MC-130 Combat Talon I's to Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico, where it will be formally retired and put on display.
"Even though there is historical significance, we use them (aircraft) until their end of life," said Col. Anthony J. Comtois, commander of the 919th SOW. "This particular aircraft has almost 24,000 flight hours and has been through a number of pretty significant missions."
The aircraft was flown for 47 years and arrived at Duke Field in 1995, he said.
"The hair on my neck is standing up just being next to this airplane," said George Ferkes, a retired Air Force pilot who flew the plane for more than 20 years. "We flew this plane from Norway down to Africa. When I saw it again, it was like, 'Whoa, I'm back home.' "
The aircraft is best known for leading the air commando assault on the Son Tay prison camp in 1970 during the Vietnam War to try to rescue American POWs.
Although the prisoners had been moved before the raid, the mission has been considered a success based on its execution and use of military assets.
"It's bittersweet as we celebrate the end of the legacy," said Col. Buck Elton with the 8th Special Operations Wing at Cannon. "It's also exciting because there are new aircraft coming behind it."
Duke Field will retire all five of its remaining MC-130s by late 2013. The planes will be replaced by twin-engine, high-wing, light mobility aircraft, Comtois said.
The actual planes Duke will receive have not been announced, he said.
After the MC-130 arrives at Canon, Lt. Col. Leon Franklin, the pilot during the Son Tay raid, will help turn it off for the last time.
Moments before the MC-130 lifted off, Ferkes stood beside it and let the past roll over him.
"There are lots of memories with this old baby," said Ferkes, who plans to travel to Canon to see it. "This is not just a piece of metal. Each plane has its own personality and has had different experiences and different missions. There is an amazing history with this airplane."

Frequency Change - Hanscom CP
For my friends in the Northeast US - Hanscom AFB (Laurence G. Hanscom Field) MA (KBED) has reportedly moved its Command Post from 397.100 MHz to 362.950 MHz. This move has long been expected since the old CP frequency is now a nationwide DoD LMR frequency assignment.
Ike Strike Group Departs for Deployment

Casper/Released) NORFOLK, VA (NNS) -- Nearly 6,000 Sailors operating on ships and aircraft of Carrier Strike Group Eight departed June 20 for a scheduled deployment in support of maritime security operations and build on maritime partnerships.
They are deploying to the 5th and 6th fleet areas of responsibilities, as part of an ongoing rotation of U.S. forces supporting maritime security operations in international waters around the globe.
"This is a flexible, agile, and ready strike group," said Rear Adm. Michael C. Manazir, CSG 8 commander. "I'm extremely proud of every Sailor in this strike group. They have contributed to the readiness so that we can meet all tasks set out for us by the fleet commanders under which we will operate. We look forward to playing a part in keeping international waterways safe and building relationships with our partners."
CSG 8's flagship, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (IKE), with the seven squadrons of Carrier Air Wing 7 embarked, departed Naval Station Norfolk, along with the guided missile destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81) and USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109).
The Mayport, Fla.-based guided missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66) and the guided missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99) left their homeport in Mayport, Fla., as well, and will join Eisenhower as the strike group transits the Atlantic Ocean.
Carrier Strike Group Eight has spent the last few months successfully completing a series of complex training events and certifications.
Air Force officials announce milestone Atlas V launch

WASHINGTON -- As part of the Defense Department's ongoing efforts to maintain assured, affordable access to space through 2030, the Atlas V rocket successfully lifted off from Space Launch Complex-41 at Florida's Cape Canaveral on June 20, Air Force officials said.
"This is an exciting time for the U.S. space launch community," said Scott Correll, the program's executive officer. "From today's successful launch of the 50th Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle to the recent success of Space X's support to NASA with their Falcon 9, it's clear the commercial space transportation industry is making notable strides."
The EELV program replaced the existing fleet of launch systems with two families of launch vehicles -- the Boeing Delta IV and Lockheed Martin Atlas V -- built and operated by the DOD's prime contractor, United Launch Alliance, Correll said.
An official from the Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base, Calif., explained that the Atlas V is a critical part of a spectrum of government missions.
"Atlas V launches space-based infrared systems, global positioning systems, the defense meteorological satellite program and the advanced extremely high frequency system satellites," said Col. Bob Hodgkiss, the director of the launch systems directorate. "I'm pleased to report that this year we have also already launched the wideband global sat-com IV aboard a Delta IV, and the Navy's mobile user objective system satellite 1 aboard Atlas V."
Because of considerable program costs, which can run as high as several billion dollars per launch, quality assurance and the development of a competitive market are paramount, Air Force officials said.
"Since the Air Force must by law self-indemnify, we do a very rigorous evaluation of the physical, electrical and radio frequency interfaces between the rocket, the satellite and the ground systems," Hodgkiss said of the process to determine flight readiness. "My team is the government's insurance policy, so we need to be sure we have the highest probability of success in one of the riskiest activities the Air Force does."
On the business side of the program, Hodgkiss said, the program's primary users, the Air Force, NASA and the National Reconnaissance Office, are developing strategies to infuse competition into space launch as a cost reduction measure.
"We are balancing the commitment we will make to ULA with the potential to reintroduce competition to the program when one or more commercial launch companies have demonstrated to the Air Force they are reliable launch providers," the colonel said.
Correll asserts that certifying new entrants will potentially enable competition, thereby lowering costs and creating innovation in government payloads such as communications, navigation, weather satellites, and science and national security missions.
"The framework offers multiple paths to on-ramp potential new entrants and part of this strategy requires an entrant to demonstrate at least one launch of a vehicle configured as an EELV-class national security space launch," he said.
ULA's next launch and the NRO's next mission, the Delta IV NROL-15, is scheduled for June 28.

Army Announces Force Structure Relocations
The Department of the Army announced today the planned relocation of two aviation units to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.: 1st Battalion, 229th Air Cavalry Squadron will relocate from Fort Hood, Texas, and convert to an Attack/Reconnaissance Battalion; and Company D, 123rd Aviation Regiment will relocate from Fort Wainwright, Alaska. These force structure actions represent a net increase of 531 military and zero civilian authorizations for the Army at Joint Base Lewis-McChord; a decrease of 402 military and zero civilian authorizations at Fort Hood; and a decrease of 129 military and zero civilian authorizations at Fort Wainwright. These actions will be completed by Oct. 15, 2012.
These force structure actions represent the final phase of the activation of the 16th Combat Aviation Brigadeat Joint Base Lewis-McChord to meet the Army's broader strategic and operational requirements. These actions incorporate the Army Force Generation Model and Army Transformation initiatives, both of which are required to achieve the Army's goal of rebalancing the force. Overall, these unit relocations will help the Army meet the increased demand placed on its aviation assets and provide combatant commanders with flexible, trained and highly-mobile forces to execute operations worldwide. USS Nimitz Coordinates Counter Narcotics Seizure

PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The crew of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) coordinated efforts with USS Princeton (CG 59), Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 6, Helicopter Maritime Squadron (HSM) 75 and the Mexican navy to retrieve 186 bales of marijuana, June 16, which were apparently destined for the United States.
"The coordinated response of all hands involved was phenomenal," remarked Nimitz Strike Group Commander Rear Adm. Pete Gumataotao. "The combined efforts of each of our strike group components demonstrated the flexibility and capability that defines how we conduct business."
"This crew's response was amazing," said USS Nimitz Commanding Officer Capt. Jeff Ruth. "To operationally shift gears quickly and safely from carrier qualifications to a real-world response shows what true professionals work here."
At approximately 1:50 p.m., USS Nimitz starboard lookouts, spotted two surface vessels, or contacts, approximately four nautical miles away and reported the contacts up the chain of command. The USS Nimitz crew then coordinated with HSC-6 to send MH-60S Seahawk helicopter 613 to perform a visual identification (VID) on the vessels.
"The [helicopter] was already in the air acting as plane guard for flight ops," said USS Nimitz' tactical action officer at the time. "When the Seahawk got overhead, they reported two white single engine boats about 25 feet in length, which immediately began dumping black hefty bags over the side. The small boats raced up to about 25 knots and fled to the east."
As the two small vessels fled at 2:22 p.m., USS Princeton, part of Carrier Strike Group 11, sent their rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIB) to investigate and retrieve the bags as evidence.
Eighty bales of marijuana, each weighing approximately 100 pounds, were recovered at that time.
At 5:05 p.m. USS Nimitz' officer of the deck spotted a small craft at approximately three nautical miles, which also appeared to be dumping in the sea. The USS Princeton positioned HSM-75's Lone Wolf 722, which is assigned to the USS Princeton, flying as a spotter for the rigid hull inflatable boats, or RHIBs, for further investigation. This caused those craft to flee as well.
"I thought it was pretty cool," said an HSC-6 pilot in the air at the time of the second spotting. "Most of the time we're a just-in-case asset. It was cool to be part of a situation where none of our guys got hurt and we were able to be a part of something bigger."
USS Princeton and a Mexican naval ship that came on scene retrieved more than 186 bales. The bales were then transferred to the Coast Guard Cutter Edisto for transport to shore.

Indiana National Guard takes part Bold Quest 12-1, tests digital communication technologies

EDINBURGH, Ind. - Indiana Army and Air National Guard members have been taking part in Bold Quest 12-1, a two-week air combat assessment exercise that focuses on testing digitally aided close air support technologies to reduce friendly fire incidents, enhance combat effectiveness, and increase situational awareness on the battlefield.
Held at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, and other training venues across Indiana, the exercise includes participants from throughout the U.S. military as well as from 12 foreign nations as well.
"Bold Quest is important on several different levels, said Army Maj. Gen. Omer Tooley, assistant adjutant general for the Indiana Army National Guard. “It represents what we consider to be the required testing of the 21st century in order to provide relevant capabilities to our young men and women going in harm's way."
As part of that, the exercise works to bring together different technologies and simulates wartime conditions to ensure coalition communication systems can effectively work between platforms.
"In a sense, what they are doing is taking these technologies that are present in various services as well as other countries and are actually putting them in a simulated and highly realistic environment to see if they actually work together," said Tooley, adding that one of the main goals is to work to eliminate the possibility of friendly fire incidents.
"Bold Quest is a unique area for arena testing and validation that our systems are compatible with U.S. systems and also other coalition systems so that we know when we meet in theater we can share the same information and eliminate fratricide," said Norwegian army Maj. Tommy Myrvoll, of the Norwegian Battle Lab.
And Camp Atterbury worked well to do just that.
"The Atterbury-Muscatatuck complex is designed and built to specifically support this type of event," said Tooley. "Where you are bringing these high-payoff technologies into a very realistic complex environment and working through the issues as to whether or not they are going to actually function as planned."
The Indiana Army National Guard’s 76th Special Troops Battalion and the Indiana Air National Guard's 122nd Fighter Wing were among the units to take part in the exercise and have benefited from that experience.
For Army Staff Sgt. Warren Sherman, the training noncommissioned officer with the unmanned aerial system platoon, B Company, 76th STB, this meant working with members of the Marines and the RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle.
"We have learned a lot here from the Marines on their Shadow system in regards to how they set up their equipment for operations, to how they troubleshoot issues and [compared our troubleshooting techniques]," he said. "I feel that we both have learned from each other."
Additional testing during the exercise consisted of taking commercial, off-the-shelf cellular technologies and incorporating that into a tactical military communications network.
"The advantage of what we are doing is leveraging commercial technology,"
said Army Maj. David Hernandez, deputy branch chief, Bold Quest future capabilities assessment branch. "With the low cost [of cellular] hand held devices as compared to a radio, we can provide one to each Soldier."
That can give servicemembers a greater sense of situational awareness, communication abilities and access to updated information.
"Each Soldier can have a common operating picture device or a friendly force tracking device in their hands,” said Hernandez. “They can also do voice [communication] and they can also do streaming video. This provides that Soldier a key advantage as opposed to our enemies in the battlefield."
And that is all part of the goal of the exercise and working toward eliminating potential incidents of fratricide, said Hernandez.

That can give servicemembers a greater sense of situational awareness, communication abilities and access to updated information.
"Each Soldier can have a common operating picture device or a friendly force tracking device in their hands,” said Hernandez. “They can also do voice [communication] and they can also do streaming video. This provides that Soldier a key advantage as opposed to our enemies in the battlefield."
And that is all part of the goal of the exercise and working toward eliminating potential incidents of fratricide, said Hernandez.
