US, Canadian jets intercept 8 Russian military aircraft near Alaska
According to numerous press reports received here at the Milcom MP overnight, two F-22 fighter jets intercepted six Russian military airplanes that neared the western coast of Alaska on Wednesday.
Lt. Col. Michael Jazdyk, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the U.S. jets intercepted the planes about 55 nautical miles from the Alaskan coast at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday evening.
The Russian planes were identified as two IL-78 refueling tankers, two Mig-31 fighter jets and two Bear long-range bombers. They looped south and returned to their base in Russia after the U.S. jets were scrambled (see related material below on the Vostok 2014 Russian military exercise).
At about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets intercepted two of the long-range bombers about 40 nautical miles off the Canadian coastline in the Beaufort Sea.
In both cases, the Russian planes entered the Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends about 200 miles from the coastline. They did not enter sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada.
In the past five years, jets under NORAD's command have intercepted more than 50 Russian bombers approaching North American airspace from our friends the Russian military.
And what is all this provocative military activity all about?
The Russians are conducting a major strategic exercise known as Vostok-2014

Crews Russian Air Force will participate in the exercises "Vostok-2014"
Air Force crews will actively participate in a large-scale strategic command post exercise "Vostok-2014" on the territory of the Eastern Military District. Russian Air Force will perform a set of tasks on a comprehensive aviation security interspecific groups of the Eastern Military District, reported the press service of the Office of Information and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
As reported by the Defense Department, the Air Force crews of the Russian Federation will fulfill the task relocation spare and operational airfields, cover troop columns on the routes moving troops, combat duty on defense, landing equipment and personnel, aerial reconnaissance, as well as the application of air strikes on ground and sea targets, simulating weapons and military equipment imaginary enemy.
The exercise will involve strategic bombers Tu-95MS missile, long-range bombers Tu-22M3 aircraft tanker Il-78 military transport aircraft Il-76 and An-12 aircraft airborne early warning
Direct participation in air support of troops in landfills TSB will provide Army Aviation helicopters Mi-8, Mi-24 and Ka-52, Sukhoi Su-24, Su-25, MiG-31 and Su-27, and the latest multi-function aviation systems of the Su-34, Su-30cm and Su-35s.
Recall exercises "Vostok-2014" will be held September 19-25, more than 20 land, sea and air ranges of the Eastern Military District, in the five regions of the Russian Federation from Anadyr to Vladivostok.
The exercise will involve about 100 thousand. Troops to 1.5 thousand. Tanks, and 120 aircraft, up to 5 thousand. Pieces of weapons, military and special equipment and up to 70 ships.
Obviously this was great timing on Putin's part since the Ukrainian President was in Washington addressing a joint session of Congress. But the tensions aren't over yet. As one military blogger posted, "can't wait for the general freakout in a few weeks when the exercise climaxes in a multiple ICBM/SLBM launch serial."
Here is some recent Russian Bear H Net activity reported via the UDXF group (Tom Hill and et al)
8162.0 kHz Tu-95MS Bear H net in CW (W Markers)
8895.0 kHz Tu-95MS Bear H net in CW (W/R Markers)
8033.0 kHz USB Comms

Another UHF Milair Spectrum Hole Frequency Has Biten the Dust
I have been closely tracking frequency usage (or lack of) in the 225-400 MHz milair band for years. When I first started doing this as a young Monitoring Times columnist, I coined the term "spectrum hole."
The 225-400 MHz band frequencies are normally spaced at 25 kHz intervals (except in the milsat subbands). Any lack of activity either reported, listed in official DoD pubs, etc. on any UHF milair freq will result in that freq being listed on my UHF Milair Spectrum Hole list (see our exclusive page at http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com/p/uhf-225-380-mhz-milcom-spectrum-holes.html).
Our close friend Jack Nesmith down in Central Florida yesterday identified some new
activity on one of those spectrum hole frequencies in my list.
277.775 MHz was active with Bolt-43 calling Lightning Ops (6AMW Command Post at MacDill AFB). Normally Lightning Ops uses 311.000 MHz so this would be a new frequency for that Command Post. Maybe this new one was up for the POTUS visit.
At any rate thanks Jack for passing that one along and if you hear any confirmed activity on any of my spectrum holes, please drop me some email at the address in the masthead. I look forward to hearing from you.

SECNAV Names Virginia-class Submarine, USS Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vt. (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus hosted a ship-naming ceremony Sept. 18 to announce that SSN 792, a Virginia-class attack submarine, will bear the name USS Vermont.
Mabus named the submarine to honor the longstanding partnership its namesake state has had with the Navy.
"From our nation's beginning, the people of Vermont have tirelessly supported our Navy, enabling us to become the unparalleled fighting force we are today," said Mabus. "I am here on the banks of Lake Champlain, to once again honor the sailors and Marines who have come from this great state, and to honor your support of our Navy and Marine Corps and your naval history."
Vermont's Lake Champlain was the site of two critical historic naval battles. Under the command of Commodore Benedict Arnold, the 1776 Battle of Valcour Island had a profound impact on the outcome of the Revolutionary War, and during the War of 1812, the U.S. defended Lake Champlain against invasion from Great Britain in the Battle of Plattsburgh.
"The name USS Vermont has a long history in our Navy," said Mabus. "In honor of the victories on Lake Champlain, following the War of 1812, the first USS Vermont was laid down and became one of our nation's largest and most powerful ships. The second USS Vermont was one of our great battleships in the years before World War I, and was one of the ships that led the Great White Fleet around the world."
This is the first ship named for Vermont since 1920 when the second USS Vermont was decommissioned.
Virginia-class submarines provide the Navy with the capabilities required to maintain the nation's undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. They have enhanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities, and special warfare enhancements that enable them to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements.
Virginia-class submarines have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land areas, littoral waters or other sea-based forces. Other missions include anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare; mine delivery and minefield mapping. They are also designed for special forces delivery and support.
Each Virginia-class submarine is 7,800-tons and 377 feet in length, has a beam of 34 feet, and can operate at more than 25 knots submerged. It is designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time. The submarine will be built in partnership with General Dynamics/Electric Boat Corp. in Groton, Connecticut.

Air Force: New Tanker’s First Flight Delayed by Months
Kris Osborn at Military.com is reporting that wiring problems with the Air Force's new KC-46A Pegasus tanker have delayed the highly anticipated first flights of the developmental refueling aircraft by several months.
The first flight of the KC-46A baseline test aircraft has been delayed from this past August to late November. Plans for the first flight of actual KC-46A variant will slide from early 2015 to April 2015.

New Net Call, New Net Name, Same Old CAP Net
According to the Civil Air Patrol Quarterly publication Vector, the USAF has granted the CAP National Traffic Net (NTN) the collective call sign of "TRIBLADE".
As a result the National Traffic Net will now be known as the "Triblade Net."
Guess I will spend some time putting together a Triblade callsign list.
