US Navy Blue Angels 2012-2013 Show Schedule Update 1

Blue Angels announce changes to 2012 show schedule, release of 2013 schedule

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, announces two changes to the 2012 show schedule and the release of the 2013 show schedule. The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform 69 demonstrations at 35 locations in 2012 and 65 demonstrations at 32 locations in 2013 throughout North America.

The 2012 changes include a show in Latrobe, Penn. on June 23-24, replacing the Pittsburg show; and two October shows have swapped dates. The air show in Jacksonville, Fla., is now Oct. 20-21 and in Houston, Texas, Oct. 27-28.

Demonstration sites are selected in support of the Department of Defense objectives and in the interest of the armed services with safety as the primary consideration. Performances greatly assist in the recruiting and retention goals for the military services, enhance esprit de corps among uniformed men and women and demonstrate the professional skills and capabilities of the Naval services to the American public and U.S. Allies.

In a break from tradition, the Blue Angels in 2010 adopted a two-year scheduling program to allow show sites more time for planning, advertising and fund-raising. The schedule posted on the blog is subject to change without notice and is weather permitting, for everyones safety.

Stay tuned to the MMP blog and check the "Milcom Blog Guide to Airshows" section on the right hand side of this blog for links to other schedules and field reports from readers during the airshow season.

"We are excited about the upcoming season and representing our fellow American Airmen," said Lt. Col. Greg Moseley, who will command and lead the team in the 2012 show season. "We feel honored to tell the story of U.S. Air Force Airmen serving on the front lines of freedom around the world. We will proudly represent each Airmen with the same pride, precision and professionalism in which they perform their duties each and every day."

As of 2012, the Thunderbirds will have been in existence for 59 years, dating back to 1953 when the team flew the straight-winged F-84G Thunderjets. This season will mark the 30th season the squadron has performed in the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the Air Force's premier multi-role fighter aircraft.

The Thunderbirds team is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots, including six demonstration pilots, four support officers, four civilians and more than 100 enlisted people serving in about 30 Air Force job specialties.

A Thunderbirds aerial demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, including the beginning ground ceremony, lasts about one hour. The air show season lasts roughly from March to November, with the winter months primarily used to train new team members.

ACC statement about reduction of single-ship demo teams in 2012

We face significant fiscal constraints and are making tough decisions about the best ways to continue providing combat airpower to warfighting commanders, which is what we do as the Air Force’s primary force provider.

One decision we’ve made is to sponsor one single-ship demonstration team for the 2012 air show season, scaling back from the six teams we’ve historically sponsored – A-10 East & West, F-16 East & West, F-15E and F-22.

For the 2012 season, we’re sponsoring our F-22 demonstration team to perform at up to 20 shows. In addition to the F-22 demonstration team, the Thunderbirds are set to complete a full season next year, and their schedule will be announced next week at the International Council of Air Shows conference.

Reducing the number of single-ship demonstration teams will allow us to reallocate more than 900 sorties to our wings so they can maximize their flying hours for combat readiness training, offsetting some of the reduction we’ve seen in flying hours. Most importantly, reallocating those sorties will provide an increase in more than 25 combat-ready fighter pilots – that’s a very good thing for our Nation and wise stewardship of our limited resources.

The opportunity to showcase our aircrew at air shows around the country is important – and we’re confident our Thunderbirds, F-22 demonstration team and the Air Force Heritage Flight Foundation will continue highlighting the extraordinary work of all our Airmen.

Miramar Air Show Commemorates Centennial of Naval Aviation

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Matthew Olay, Navy Public Affairs Support Element West

MIRAMAR, Calif. (NNS) -- Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar opened its gates to three-quarters of a million members of the local San Diego community Sept. 30 - Oct. 2 for the facility's annual air show.

Themed "A Salute to San Diego: Birthplace of Naval Aviation 1911 - 2011", the show focused on this year's Centennial of Naval Aviation (CoNA) by highlighting how far military aviation (specifically that of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard) has advanced during the past century.

"The Miramar Air Show is an excellent example of the Centennial of Naval Aviation. It's a tri-service celebration," said Lt. Harriet Johnson, a Naval aviator and protocol officer for the CoNA. "All three of the sea services go through the same flight training, so [this event] shows our mutual heritage and history that we've gone through."

As with each year, the air show featured a wide variety of airborne flight demonstrations from an assortment of Navy and Marine Corps aircraft, as well as demonstrations by the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team. The U.S Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team rounded out each day's performance with their signature demonstration of aerial agility, and the Marine Air-Ground Task Force provided the crowd with a dynamic ground and air pyrotechnic mock-combat demonstration.

Away from the main flight line, there were also a number of static aircraft displays for attendees to view. As this year's show commemorated the CoNA, air show organizers worked hard to bring a great deal of vintage Navy and Marine Corps planes from around the U.S. to be put on display.

"We don't have a lot of civilian aircraft out here this year, and that was by design," said Lt. Col. D.R. Lingman, MCAS Miramar's operations officer. "We wanted to illustrate 100 years of military aviation, [to honor] the people that build these great machines that we fly, and to show that this is the progression from where we were to where we're going."

For spectators like area resident Ty Phillips, the air show did not disappoint.

"It's amazing," he said. "It's my first time here, and I have to praise our military because they do an amazing job every day, and I thank them."

Johnson said that the CoNA isn't simply a military milestone.

"It's a milestone of the entire United States," she said. "The military services are all a representation of our country and of our public, so it's important to show the American public who we are, what we're doing, and to thank them for our history and heritage."

US Navy Blue Angels 2011 Show Schedule Update 1

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, The Blue Angels, has announced their show schedule for the 2011 season at the annual International Council of Airshows convention. Following winter training, the team begins the season March 12 at Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro, CA and will conclude the season Nov. 12 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, FL.

USAF Thunderbirds 2011 Official Airshow Schedule Update 2

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, NV - The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, "Thunderbirds," publicly announced their 2011 air show schedule. The team is scheduled to perform nearly 70 shows in 25 states, 1 U.S. territory and 10 European countries. They will kickoff the 2011 season by performing a flyover for the 53rd running of the Daytona 500, Feb. 20.

"The entire team is excited to announce our schedule for 2011," said Lt. Col. Case Cunningham, Thunderbird No. 1, Commander/Leader. "Our team is anxious to get on the road to represent the nearly 700,000 Airmen serving today. We take pride in all they do, and the manner in which they are doing it, with integrity and excellence, while placing service before self, time and time again."

The second year commander says it will be an awesome opportunity to engage with our Allies across the Atlantic. "We look forward to illustrating the selfless commitment and visible pride America's Airmen have in what they are doing, and what they stand for, both at home and overseas," said Cunningham.

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support officers, four civilians and about 110 enlisted people performing in more than 29 Air Force specialties.

A Thunderbirds' aerial demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, including ground and air, runs about one hour. The air show season lasts from March to November, with the winter months used to train new members.

For more information about the Thunderbirds, visit www.airforce.com/thunderbirds or follow us on Facebook (U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds) and Twitter (USAFThunderbird).

US Navy Blue Angels Official 2010-2011 Schedule Update 2

Below is the first airshow schedule posted here on MMP for the 2010 season.

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, The Blue Angels, announces its show schedules for the 2010 and 2011 season at the annual International Council of Airshows convention. Following winter training, the team begins the season March 13 at Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro, CA and will conclude the season Nov. 13 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, FL. The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform 67 shows at 35 locations throughout the United States in 2010.

Allies.

In a break from tradition, the Blue Angels have adopted a two-year scheduling program to allow show sites more time for planning, advertising and fund-raising. You can read more on this part of the story on this blog at click here. This schedule is subject to change without notice and is weather permitting, for everyone's safety.

Other officers beginning their first season with the team are Thunderbird No. 3, Capt. Chad Shenk, right wing; Thunderbird No. 6, Capt. Aaron Jelinek, opposing solo; Thunderbird No. 8, Maj. John Gallemore, advance pilot and narrator; Thunderbird No. 9, Capt Thom Bowden, flight surgeon.

The new team members will join returning officers Thunderbird No. 2, Maj. John Baum, left wing; Thunderbird No. 4, Maj. Sean Gustafson, slot; Thunderbird No. 5, Maj. The Thunderbirds, originally known as the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit out of Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., was activated May 25, 1953.

The demonstration squadron is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots, including six demonstration pilots, four support officers, four civilians and about 110 enlisted people performing in more than 29 Air Force specialties.

The Thunderbirds' aerial demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The pilots perform about 40 maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, including ground and air, runs about one hour. The airshow season lasts from March to November, with the winter months used to train new members.

"We are humbled to have the opportunity to travel the U.S and Canada this year, representing the 700,000 Airmen in America's Air Force," Captain McCree said.
