Mode-S/ADS Milcom Intercepts 19-23 Mar 2016 - Brasstown NC

Last evening had a USAF E-4B NAOC Mode-S callsign Paddy 17 (ADFEB6 75-0125) over the ranch here in western NC and also caught him passing a 30c 6V424B EAM on UHF 323.800 MHz. 

 

Tip for my Milcom friends: Make sure regardless of where you are located here in the US that you keep 323.800 MHz plugged your Milcom UHF bank of freqs.

Interesting times on HFGCS

Most ute monitors usually do not pay any attention to the message traffic that is passed on the DoD JCS HFGCS HF radio system. We have Emergency Action Messages (EAMs) and Skyking aka Foxtrot message traffic (see my detailed discussion of these messages on this blog at http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com/p/what-is-emergency-action-message-or-eam.html).

Recently things have become more interesting. Instead of a 3-character message that has been the staple of the Foxtrot messages since forever, they have now started using creative code words. The last three days Foxtrot message traffic have consisted of  Springstein, Santana, and now this morning Hendrix.

It also looks like we have gone back to our Cold War roots and have started using tac code words calls for various HFGCS stations when transmitting these EAM and Foxtrot message traffic when transmitting on this net. Prior to this you would have heard Andrews, Offutt, McClellan or one of the other HFGCS stations worldwide using their location as the identifier.

In addition, we have some other HF RF indicators being seen throughout the HF spectrum that would indicate that things are changing in the mil HF world.

So who says that HF is dead hasn't either turned on a receiver lately or monitored the right frequencies.

Chief Sends

New DoD EAM format noted yesterday!

One of the dean of military monitors, Jeff Haverlah, posted the following to the Milcom newsgroup yesterday morning.

There's something noteworthy on the HFGCS. The HFGCS system has been running many 30-character EAM strings since at least 0300z+/- and probably earlier, with all 30-character strings rebcst at the systems h+00/h+30 restoral windows. Currently OFFUTT is bcsting 30-character strings 4V75ZO; 4VDWVK; 4VY6Vv at 1100z; and, a single string (4V75ZO maybe) at 1130z. As with any string greater than 28-characters all strings are sent with the character count statement. Unusual.

Yes, this is very unusual Jeff. I have a HF receiver parked on a HF-GCS and it will be interesting to see if we hear any 6/20/28c EAMs, in addition to those 30c messages you monitored yesterday going forward from here.

Monitoring EAM Traffic Streams on HF-GCS

If you are sitting on the HF-GCS freqs monitoring EAM traffic streams this afternoon, you have probably heard quite a few passed. I can confirm that the 28 character OQ traffic streams are NOT real world. Earlier heard Turbo 70 ask Andy on 11175 kHz what the current 6 character training message was. Andy passed OQCPEF. At 1900 UTC Andy passed that preamble and the rest of the message as a 28c EAM.

So the current OQ 28c messages are not real world. Can't tell you anything about the 36/48c AE EAM streams.

Flash -- STRATCOM Exercise

Based on monitoring it would appear USSTRATCOM is conducting some sort of exercise. No more details available. Good time to park on 11175 kHz USB and keep an ear open.

Interesting Comms on 11175 kHz this Sunday

As I posted on the Milcom and UDXF newsgroups this morning I have heard some interesting comms on 11175 kHz HF-GCS primary (digital burst/ALE/Arabic language speakers).

And for my old friend Jeff Haverlah in Texas at 1545 UTC caught a SkyKing message (heard in the US and Europe) by NCS Offutt, followed by an EAM 28 characters (WZ5LCZ) broadcast by Andrews. At 1549 Offutt broadcast another 28 character EAM (WZLOAS). At 1607 Offutt broadcast another EAM, 22 characters (WZQ34I). So we have a worldwide Skyking message, followed by two 28c/one 22c EAM. Sound familiar Jeff.

Interesting note, after the 22c EAM, McClellan broadcasted all frequency call for Reach 295 several times. Nothing heard on the Euro receiver other than King 88 working Croughton for pp traffic.

At 1734, Offutt passed a 28 character EAM (WZUQUP).
At 1738, Lajes passed an EAM restoral message for the WZUQUP above.
At 1746, McClellan was up making an all frequency call for Reach 599.
At 1748, McClellan passed a six character EAM (YFZ5ME) for High Racks.
At 1753, McClellan passed a six character EAM (YFHNTF) for High Racks.
