C-17 missions play vital role in war on terrorism

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AFNEWS) - Sitting on the tarmac here, the "Spirit of Go for Broke," a C-17 Globemaster III from Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, looks like any other of its kind.

Large, grey, boxy, with expansive wings ending in a curved wingtip, this C-17 is one of eight aircraft jointly maintained and operated by both active duty and Hawaii Air National Guard Airmen at Hickam AFB, Hawaii. Like others in Hickam's fleet, the C-17 has a vital mission supporting the war on terrorism.

"We got an opportunity ... a mission ... a keeper mission coming all the way out of Hickam Air Force Base all the way into the AOR," said Master Sgt. Mike Cumberland, a loadmaster assigned to the 535th Airlift Squadron. "It's a great opportunity to show our reach, our global mobility reach and show Hickam Air Force Base can meet any challenges it is thrown."

"Go for Broke's" mission actually began six hours and several thousand miles earlier when "Go for Broke", also known as Reach 5152, after its tail number, took off over the tip of Oahu and turned sharply for the U.S. mainland.

Leaving the Hawaiian sunshine and chasing the darkness, Reach 5152 touched down in Colorado in the early morning hours, in weather 83 degrees less than when they left.

Neither the late hour nor the 5 degree outside temperature deters 5152's crew as they begin onloading the first of two shipment of cargo bound for northern Iraq.

"It helps the mission launch sequence. We'd rather get what we can get loaded at the end of the day rather than the beginning of the day," Sergeant Cumberland said. "Our on-time departure is more important than staying at the plane a little bit longer and loading up what we can, we would rather the launch sequence go correct."

The next day's sequencing is also incumbent on 5152 taking off on schedule, Sergeant Cumberland said.

"We also have a mid-air refueling scheduled for tomorrow so it is very important that we meet our timetable so that we are able to meet up with the tanker at the right time."

The next day Reach 5152 lifts off and heads out over the Colorado mountains bound for its midair refueling over Canada and then onto the remainder of its 10-and-a-half hour flight to Germany.

Down below, troops lay out on the plane's deck settling in for the flight. In Germany, Reach 5152 will make one more crew stop before pushing into Iraq and beginning the first of two missions -- the first to Mosul, the second to Baghdad.

Fort Monroe Hosts Joint Communication Exercise

HAMPTON, Va. (NNS) -- U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Task Force Civil Support (JTF-CS) hosted the Defense Interoperability Communications Exercise (DICE) 2007 at Fort Monroe March 5-16.

The exercise brings both Department of Defense (DoD) and non-DoD agencies together to simulate real-world scenarios that would require multiple groups to coordinate emergency communications.

DICE ensures that in the event of a natural disaster or mass casualty situation, local police, fire and rescue, and emergency medical crews can communicate with military units as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and American Red Cross.

“The goal is to take all pieces and provide a platform for everyone to talk together,” said Patty Critzer, the deputy director of communications systems at JTF-CS. “We want to make sure everyone is getting the best information they can. From the local first responders to the federal government, each one is here to simulate the types of challenges they could face.”

Many of the organizations and units participating in DICE brought with them communication trucks, equipped with a self-sustaining power supply and communication systems, which could operate on a wide range of networks. These trucks make it possible for communication to be established at sites where devastation may have knocked out the normal methods. Using the latest in advanced communication technology, they can link cell phones to walkie-talkies and military radios to their civilian counterparts or one device to any other. Some are even capable of providing secure lines for passing classified information.

“Our operational command post is used to provide interoperable communication to people in the area of operations,” said Matt Hopper, a representative of U.S. Army North, 5th Army. “Our main focus is interoperable radio communication. We network together so we can talk to one another.”

DICE will continue to be a yearly exercise, allowing multiple groups to train together. Practicing linking up communication equipment is a necessary part of emergency response training.

“We test our work with a wide spectrum of people we work with,” said Critzer. “We have to have systems that are interoperable; the way in which we can pass data, the way the other system receives it and can process it. We are here to get better situational awareness.”

JTF-CS is the only military organization dedicated solely to planning and integrating DoD forces with civilian authorities in an emergent situation. They are staffed by active, Reserve and guard members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. However, the majority of the JTF-CS communications staff is made up of Navy information systems technicians.

2007 Blue Angel’s Season Begins

EL CENTRO, Calif. (NNS) -- The Blue Angels held their first air show for the 2007 season in the Southern California area, March 10.

The Blue Angels play a part in the recruiting program. They attract many young, talented and ambitious people for the armed forces by publicly demonstrating the skills and abilities of Naval aviators.

“It involves lots of preparation,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Davis a pilot for the Blue Angels. “As soon as the previous season ended in November 2006, the new 2007 team immediately began training for upcoming events.”

The Blue Angels have more than 66 shows scheduled to appear in 35 different cities for the year of 2007. The F/A-18 Hornet,one of the most advanced aircrafts, marked its 20th year that it has been performing with the team.

“When we do air shows, the audience is always excited to see us,” said Aviation Ordnanceman (SW) 2nd Class Amani Brown, crew chief for the Blue Angels. “It also helps with the recruitment program.”

Every team member brings their own skills in a distinct job, but is expected to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Blue Angels.

“Here at the Blue Angels, our biggest concept is team work and we help each other with every little aspect,” said Brown. “It’s just a tremendous honor to be a member of the Blue Angels and we are excited to start the 2007 season.”

The air shows are one-day events that take a lot of planning and training to prepare for their performances.

“I have been watching the Blue Angels for about 20 years and their performances [get] better every year,” said George Ferguson, a fan of the Blue Angels. “These guys do a phenomenal job and it’s a great representation for the armed forces.”

Ike Returns to Persian Gulf to Support OIF, MSO

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), flagship of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG), entered the Persian Gulf on March 15, accompanied by the guided-missile destroyer USS Anzio (CG 68).

Starting March 17, Ike and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 began conducting missions in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and maritime security operations (MSO) in the Gulf.

Providing support to U.S. and multinational ground forces in Iraq helps set the conditions for security and stability within the region and establishes an environment that allows the Iraqi people to have the opportunity to determine their own future.

Ike and CVW-7 squadrons are ready to take on the challenges OIF presents.

“The whole squadron work-up cycle prepares us for this,” said Command Master Chief (SW) Jon Echols, from the “Jolly Rogers” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 103. “They’re professionals and will keep the jets flying in whichever environment they work in.”

CVW-7 had been flying missions into Afghanistan since the beginning of February. From Feb. 17 to March 14, the air wing flew more than 4,000 hours and more than 1,400 sorties providing close-air power support and reconnaissance to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops.

The Ike CSG departed Naval Station Norfolk on Oct. 3, for a regularly scheduled deployment in support of maritime security operations and entered the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations Oct. 30, 2006.

Oldest GPS satellite being prepared for disposal

The oldest operational satellite in the GPS constellation has broadcast its signal for more than 16 years, during which time that signal's mission applications -- and the people who make sure the signal is available -- have changed dramatically.

When Satellite Vehicle Number 15 launched Oct. 1, 1990, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., the 2nd Space Operations Squadron's mission was markedly different from what it is today, the 2nd SOPS commander noted.

"We did a great job of telemetry, tracking and control for satellites (when SVN-15 was launched)," Lt. Col. Kurt Kuntzelman said. "The mission today has expanded focus from pure satellite command and control to include effects-based operations."

Today, 2nd SOPS provides precision navigation and timing combat effects for war fighters around the world.

"We used to work our shifts, and as long as the satellites were broadcasting their signal and everything looked good on telemetry, we'd pat ourselves on the back," Colonel Kuntzelmen said. "But we didn't really have an appreciation for how people were using that signal. Now we're growing our user operations focus."

Colonel Kuntzelman was a second lieutenant at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., when SVN-15 became operational. At the time, the logistics plans and programs officer was helping to convert B-1B Lancers from a strategic to a conventional role in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

The Air Force used unguided and laser-guided munitions against Iraqi ground forces during Desert Storm. When the United States entered Iraq again in March 2003, the majority of air-to-ground munitions were GPS-aided.

"In a way, it's come around full circle for me," Colonel Kuntzelman said.

The colonel first became interested in space while working at U.S. Space Command and North American Aerospace Defense in future logistics and sustainment of space systems.

"My colonel was an aircraft maintenance officer who had transitioned into space," Colonel Kuntzelman said. "He took me under his arm and said, 'Logistics is privatizing and outsourcing, and you're going to need to get some operational experience.' I had a conference with my wife ... and we decided to give space operations a shot."

Colonel Kuntzelman went to Vandenberg AFB, Calif., in 1998 for space undergraduate training. When he graduated, he came to his first assignment choice: the GPS mission at Schriever.

"Space operations was a growing career field, and GPS is the flagship (satellite) of (Air Force) Space Command," he said. "So if you're going to do something, you might as well be part of the best."

Meanwhile, SVN-15 reached the end of its design life ... and kept ticking.

The change in focus from flying satellites to delivering combat effects has contributed to other GPS-based programs such as the small-diameter bomb and the Joint Precision Airdrop System, he said. Reservists with 19th SOPS are also playing an increasingly critical role in GPS operations.

In addition, civil applications have grown exponentially. GPS' use in a wide variety of navigational and financial applications, which has resulted in calls from Australian farmers, people navigating city streets and even a golfer.

"My father's an avid golfer," Colonel Kuntzelman said, smiling. "He gave me a call and told me he came up short with his 9-iron, and he tried to blame it on me for giving him the wrong GPS signal. He said it gave him the wrong yardage. Apparently it cost him a couple of bucks with his buddies."

In October 2005, SVN-15 (nicknamed "Firebird" by Boeing) turned 15. It had lived twice as long as its original design life and kept going. Recently, however, the aging satellite developed heart trouble.

"The operational clocks eventually couldn't maintain their signal within specs," Colonel Kuntzelman said.

Something didn't necessarily go wrong -- rather, everything went right for nearly nine years longer than engineers and satellite operators could have expected, the colonel added.

Satellite control authority for SVN-15 transitioned to 1st SOPS March 14. After end-of-life testing that will take about a month, they will boost the satellite into a disposal orbit.

USNORTHCOM Takes Part in Annual DICE Exercise

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - As the military combatant command charged with defending the American homeland, one of U.S. Northern Command's missions is providing defense support of civil authorities, such as support to state and local first responders, as directed by the president or secretary of defense during a national emergency.

Having Department of Defense personnel and their civilian counterparts working side-by-side at incident scenes means that everyone needs to be able to talk to each other. And that means having compatible communications equipment.

To that end, USNORTHCOM is participating throughout this month in the annual Department of Defense Interoperability Communications Exercise, or DICE. One of USNORTHCOM's subordinate commands, Joint Task Force Civil Support, is hosting part of the exercise at Fort Monroe, Va., while other participants are at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

"The DICE venue is an opportunity for Department of Defense, National Guard and local first responders to get together to test their communications systems and work with each other to ensure that the systems are interoperable and we can share information between DoD, federal and local responders," said Jim Rizzo, chief of USNORTHCOM's command, control, communications and computers plans section.

DICE participants include personnel and equipment from each of the military services and the Coast Guard, the National Guard, the Department of Homeland Security and state and local agencies.

The seven-week DICE exercise has two main goals, according to Rizzo.

"One is ... Joint Interoperability Test Center certification of military equipment," Rizzo said. "There's also, at the end of the certification period, an exercise on how we communicate so that the local responders and the other folks ... at the venue have an opportunity to get some hands-on experience with interoperating with military forces."

JTF-CS has medium and heavy tactical communications packages undergoing certification at DICE, said Patty Critzer, deputy of the JTF-CS communications systems directorate.

"We're working with the 20-some other units that are out here and actually doing radio checks and communication checks, making sure that we can talk from our command post down to our first responders," Critzer said.

Radios and hardware aren't the only components that need to be compatible at the scene of emergencies. Responders themselves may not communicate clearly due to cultural and language barriers, Rizzo said. But DICE and other exercises build cultural ties and help groups understand a little more about each other's point of view, he added.

"Every time we have an exercise where it affords us the opportunity to start working with the local responders and the local community or the state or the National Guard," Rizzo said, "it breaks those barriers down just a little bit more, so that we can effectively interoperate with each other."

Bonhomme Richard ESG Kicks Off JTFEX

USS BONHOMME RICHARD, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) (BHR) Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) departed their homeport of San Diego on March 14 to take part in Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX).

JTFEX is the third and final phase of BHR ESG's pre-deployment training. The exercise is expected to test the strike group's full range of missions from ballistic missile defense to amphibious landings.

"JTFEX is the strike group's graduate-level exercise," said BHR Commanding Officer Capt. Steve Greene. "It will test our ability to plan and execute our full range of missions. Unlike previous exercises, where our embarked mentors [Strike Force Training Pacific Staff] prepared us to function efficiently and effectively as a strike group. Now, they will stand back; let us operate on our own; and evaluate our effectiveness."

Commander Amphibious Squadron (COMPHIBRON) 7, Capt. Bradley Martin, said while JTFEX poses a wide range of unscripted and challenging events, the strike group will conduct the exercise with an emphasis on safety.
Martin commands, coordinates, integrates and executes the deployed operations of all surface ships and units assigned to BHR ESG and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).

"We will be very busy throughout the exercise," said Martin. "And as in any free play training environment, things can happen at any time. Having said that, the pace will be within the parameters of ORM [operational risk management]. This is still training."

Martin added, JTFEX will be a step up from the previously completed ESG Exercise and Composite Training Unit Exercise.

"We are making excellent progress towards completing our integrated training," said Martin. "While we're ready, this will be a more challenging exercise than those previously completed."

Martin said the strike group has shown continual and significant progress as an integrated force and will continue to do so as it moves into JTFEX, the final preparatory phase of training before BHR ESG is ready for deployment.

"This exercise will give us an opportunity to show what an expeditionary strike group is capable of," said Martin. "We can prove that they have the ability to do tremendous things. We're ready for deployment and everything that comes with it."

BHR ESG is comprised of COMPHIBRON 7, USS Denver (LPD 9), USS Rushmore (LPD 47), USS Milius (DDG 69), USS Chosin (CG 65), USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and the 13th MEU. The strike group is scheduled to deploy early next month.

HSL-49 Det. 3 Returns Home From Deployment

NAS NORTH ISLAND, Calif. (NNS) -- The "Dons" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 49 Det. 3, returned home to Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) on March 13, following a six-month deployment.

Embarked with Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 5 aboard USS Howard (DDG 83), the two-helicopter detachment performed maritime security operations (MSO) in the Persian Gulf in direct support of the global war on terrorism.

MSO sets the conditions for regional security and stability in the maritime environment and complements the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. In addition, MSO denies international terrorist organizations the use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other materials.

Det. 3 aided Howard and ESG 5 in oil platform defense south of Iraq by maintaining perimeter security around the Khawr Al Amaya and Al Basrah oil terminals. The oil exports from these two terminals account for 85 percent of Iraq’s economic revenues. In this capacity, the detachment provided surface surveillance and coordination to warfare commanders in the region and air support to visit, board, search and seizure teams from Howard and other coalition and Iraqi forces.

“This deployment has proven to be a valuable learning experience for both flight crew and maintainers alike," said pilot Lt. j.g. Jeffery J. Lassard. "The variety of operations and missions undertaken have challenged the detachment personnel and provided a solid experience base for future deployments. I am glad to have taken part.”

In addition to the defense operations around Iraq, Det. 3 carried out search and rescue missions, medical evacuations and logistics support flights. Det. 3's Sailors also on-loaded and off-loaded mail, distinguished visitors and vital parts to the ship and her crew.

Prior to arriving on station in the Persian Gulf, they participated in several joint naval exercises including an undersea warfare exercise with the Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group and forces stationed in-and-around the Hawaiian Islands. They also participated in Malabar 2006, a multinational exercise involving the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, as well as the Indian and Canadian navies.

These exercises increased combat readiness and interoperability while enhancing the cooperative security relationship between foreign allies and the United States.

Det. 3, safely executed 649 flight hours during their six-month deployment. Of those, 400 were operational hours with the majority taking place in the Gulf.

During the course of their deployment, Det. 3 made several port visits including Pearl Harbor; Darwin, Australia; Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India; Manama, Bahrain; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Guam.

Bremerton returns to Pearl Harbor from Sea Trials

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- USS Bremerton (SSN 698) returned to Pearl Harbor Naval Station, March 14, after completing her first set of sea trials in more than three years.

According to Capt. Stephen Marr, Commander, Submarine Squadron One, Bremerton entered the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in February 2004 for an engineering refuel and overhaul and had been in the shipyard ever since.

“It feels tremendous to have Bremerton join us at the submarine piers,” Marr said. “After three years of hard work in the shipyard, their first set of sea trials went superbly and ahead of schedule.”

Bremerton’s return to the submarine piers at Pearl Harbor Naval Station marks her as an up-and-running, operational submarine, ready and willing for service with the fleet.

“It’s good to be back in business,” said Cmdr. Thomas Zwolfer, Bremerton commanding officer. “It’s good to bring her back to her natural home. The shipyard did a good job getting the ship back together and we look forward to getting out to sea again as soon as possible.”

Both Zwolfer and Master Chief Fire Control Technician (SS) Dave Steele, Bremerton’s chief of the boat, agreed the crew’s “high morale and hard work were key to the success and completion to the underway.”

Bremerton, the 10th ship of the Los Angeles class of submarines, was commissioned March 28, 1981. With a crew of more than 120 enlisted and 10 officers, she is 360-feet long and has the capability to carry Tomahawk missiles and MK-48 torpedoes.

3/15/2007 - LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. (AFNEWS) -- Gen. Duncan McNabb, Air Mobility Command commander, delivered the 463rd Airlift Group' s first combat-ready C-130J Hercules March 13. The aircraft will be used in combat operations around the world.

"This is a big day for Little Rock and it is a big day for Air Mobility Command. I'm really excited about what the future holds," said General McNabb. "I have gotten to fly the C-130J in theater with the Air National Guard. What a difference it made not only to the capability, but the contribution it makes to this global war on terrorism."

The general said his command's newest tactical airlifter is the latest link to a proud 51-year C-130 legacy of tactical airlift.

"This airplane doesn't just represent America, it is America," said General McNabb.

The 463rd Airlift Group is a primary component in the war on terrorism and the battle for Iraq. They are credited with taking more than 5,200 convoys off Iraqi roads through their tactical airlift mission there.

The new aircraft and its capabilities are another opportunity for the 463rd to push the boundaries of tactical airlift, said Col. John. Gomez, 463rd AG commander.

"We look forward to the opportunity to modernize the C-130 fleet as we remain on the forefront of national defense," said Colonel Gomez. "The quantum leap of capability provided by the J model allows us to go higher, faster and farther with more cargo as we respond to crises around the world."

"No one has a stronger track record of expanding the envelope or increasing our theater airlift capability to support the warfighter than the men and women of Little Rock Air Force Base," the colonel said.

SUBLANT Statement Regarding USS San Juan

NORFOLK (NNS) -- During the early evening of March 13, units of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) received a series of indications that USS San Juan (SSN 751), a Los Angeles class submarine conducting pre-deployment training with the Enterprise CSG, was in distress.

Fortunately, the submarine established communications in the early morning hours of March 14, and indicated that there were no problems; hence, units were able to stand down from the search and rescue that was already well underway.

Losses of communications, followed by the reported sighting of a red flare, are distress indicators. These indicators, combined with establishing communications with only two of the three submarines operating with the Enterprise CSG, was sufficient information to activate missing submarine procedures.

Ships and aircraft from the Enterprise Strike group immediately commenced a search of the area where San Juan had been operating.

The International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office (ISMERLO) in Norfolk, Va., was alerted to assist with the search and rescue effort. ISMERLO, an international organization, serves to facilitate the rapid call out of international rescue systems in the event of a submarine accident. The immediate response from various international entities was superb. In addition, San Juan family members were notified of the situation at hand.

Although this was a false alarm, the primary concern was the safety of our submariners and the support of family members. Procedures demonstrated that the submarine escape and rescue program is able to quickly respond to an event such as this – when every second counts.

The Submarine Force is concerned about how this event initiated from what would appear to be false indicators. The Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic will conduct a thorough review of the matter to determine any lessons learned.

Navy temporarily loses contact with sub

The Navy temporarily lost communication with a submarine off Florida's coast and sent ships and aircraft to search for the USS San Juan (SSN-751) before the vessel was contacted early Wednesday (March 14, 2007), military officials said.


The San Juan is part of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group operating off the Florida eact coast.

Duxford UK Airshow Freqs

Below are the CAA temp main allocations for use at airshows and air events in UK and then below that another list of special freqs that on busy weekends when the other five are in use across the whole of UK. They take some other freqs as well, in theory CAA could allocate any freq not in use within say 50 km or so, but tend to stick to regualr first five and then any of the others, also each year a new one or two are added.

3/13/2007 - BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq (AFNEWS) -- Helping to orchestrate the airpower symphony over Iraq are the Airmen of the 727th Expeditionary Air Control Squadron. Known as Kingpin, they turn non-stop air operations into a ground forces' favorite tune -- the sound of jets prowling the sky overhead.

Currently manned by the Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., 728th ACS, the 727th EACS is responsible for controlling all aircraft operating inside Iraq's 277,000 square miles of airspace. As a testimony to how daunting that task can be, during its previous deployment here from May to September 2006, the unit surveyed, identified and controlled more than 166,000 aircraft.

"Our 200 Airmen keep all airborne assets arranged and under control so ground forces get the air support they need," said Lt. Col. Frederick DeFranza, the 727th EACS commander. "A pilot is concerned about one mission. My Airmen are concerned about every mission so troops on the ground never have to wonder if their insurance policy in the sky is good."

The heart of Kingpin's operations lies in several mobile operation modules; conex-shaped trailers stuffed with an array of computers and communication equipment chilled to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Inside each 'box,' enlisted surveillance and weapons directors and air weapons officers chatter away in a language foreign to the untrained ear, simultaneously directing roughly 40 separate aircraft to multiple headings, altitudes and locations with the eventual goal of providing air support to ground forces.

"Thud 35 - approved 88 Alpha Sierra 12 to 15,000 - traffic stacked below you - surface to 10,000 - traffic stacked above 16 to 22,000 - elevator into your blocks and push tactical," rattles off Senior Airman Andrew Labadie, an enlisted weapons director.

To bring a semblance of order to the myriad of aircraft over Iraq, the ACS divides the country's airspace into 'kill boxes,' referred to as the common grid reference system. As aircraft launch and exit a ring of airspace surrounding military airfields, they are passed from the military air traffic controllers in the airfield tower and the combined enroute radar approach control into the capable hands of Kingpin's controllers.

As new blips appear on dimly illuminated scopes, Kingpin assigns each to a block of airspace to conduct missions such as surveillance or close air support. Other aircraft are shuffled to mate up with tankers or committed to support time-sensitive missions such as troops in contact with enemy forces.

Eyes dart from the scopes to a separate terminal that displays a classified version of a chat room. Snippets of information pop up as a joint terminal air controller embedded with ground forces punches in a TIC request for airpower and supporting organizations confirm and contribute other critical data. Kingpin controllers scan the Air tasking order, cross reference the radar scopes, and quickly determine the weapon configuration and fuel load of the nearest available aircraft. Within seconds, they've cleared the airspace and determined the ideal aircraft to assign to the unfolding drama on the ground.

"We're continuously developing a three-dimensional, real-time picture of the battlespace," said AWO Captain Stefanie Emery. "Our Airmen build the safety net in the sky that pilots, aircrew and ground forces depend on. It's an incredible team effort."

"It gets a little hairy sometimes, but it's nothing the four of us can't handle," said Airman Labadie. "Working together in close quarters every day, it sometimes seems as if we can accurately anticipate what we're all going to think and do as a particular situation arises."

The Airmen's faces reflected in the scopes display a calm demeanor in spite of the intense tempo. Their cool judgment and quick decisions are the result of the thorough training that precedes every deployment. It also helps that 45 percent of Kingpin's current Airmen were here only four months ago; hardly time for their Balad-honed skills to grow rusty.

"This TDY has been better than the last because of how quick we've returned," said Senior Master Sergeant Scott Delveau, 727th EACS first sergeant. "Many of us just left in September, so the tempo is still fresh. It has made a difference in how seamlessly we picked up the baton Mountain Home's 726th ACS handed to us."

Success inside the chilled boxes hinges on the hard work of the miniature Air Force that operates within Kingpin's compound. With 27 different Air Force specialties, an EACS is a self-sustaining force. Its diverse ranks include operations, security forces, medics, intelligence, services, supply, satellite communications and an array of maintainers including vehicle, radio, radar, communications, aerospace ground equipment and heating, ventilation and air conditioning, to name a few.

"Our unique composition and mobile nature allows us to pack up and deploy to austere locations," said Major Cooper Bowden, chief of maintenance. "The ingenuity and diverse skills of our maintainers and support personnel are the driving force that keeps Kingpin moving."

A stroll through the compound reveals Airmen changing humvee brakes, conducting communication component operational checks, diagnosing ailments in the clinic and even enjoying some downtime in the unit's fitness and recreation centers. These amenities support the Airmen whose job responsibilities often require them remaining on a short tether should the need arise for their invaluable skills.

"As important as it is for our controllers to direct aircraft in the skies, it's equally important to the Kingpin mission for an HVAC maintainer to repair an air conditioning system that keeps the controller's equipment operating properly," said Technical Sgt. Josh Phillips, Non-commissioned officer in charge of the AGE and HVAC maintenance shops.

Having deployed with the 728th ACS for all four of its OIF deployments since 2003, Sergeant Phillips makes sure his troops treat the equipment as if it were their own.
"We have some unique power and voltage requirements," Sergeant Phillips said. "We might operate outside the box, but the sharp Airmen maintaining our generators and cooling units know how critical they are to keeping those boxes humming. If we didn't do our job, our controllers couldn't do theirs and same for the operators in the sky. The food chain starts with these maintainers and we're proud of what we bring to the fight."

Well into this deployment, the Airmen of Eglin's 728th ACS are constantly looking for opportunities to improve future Airmen's deployments to the 727th EACS. While it enjoys the recreation and fitness centers christened by its predecessors, Kingpin's current occupants are looking to improve overall communications and situational awareness of the battlespace with a new Battle Command and Control center slated to open in November 2007. The center will co-locate the boxes, CERAP function and an Air Support Operations Center liaison to enhance communications and improve CAS response time.

"We know we'll be proudly sporting the Kingpin call sign in eight months, so we're starting the improvements now to reap the benefits when we return, Lt. Col. DeFranza said. "Between the contributions of Mountain Home, Eglin and Hill AFB's 729th ACS, Kingpin and its mission are a work in progress each of us leaves a little better off than we inherited it."

Dover Reserve squadron flies final C-5 flight

3/13/2007 - DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. (AFNEWS) -- The 326th Airlift Squadron, a unit in the Air Force Reserve Command's 512th Airlift Wing here, flew its final C-5 Galaxy flight March 10.

The squadron converts to the C-17 Globemaster III mission April 1.

The base's first C-17 arrives in June and it will receive 12 more of the aircraft over the course of two years. The base will keep 18 of its original 36 C-5s.

The 326th AS has been flying the C-5 since it arrived at Dover in 1973. Their sister squadron, the 709th Airlift Squadron, will continue to fly the C-5.

"It's a great moment in history for the 326th AS," said Lt. Col. Louis Patriquin, who has 3,000 flying hours on the C-5 and was the aircraft commander on the final flight. "The squadron has been flying the C-5 for 34 years, and today we're starting a new chapter adding the C-17."

It was a bittersweet moment, said Lt. Col. Rob Shepherd, 326th AS commander. He too has flown 3,000 hours in the C-5 and is currently attending C-17 school at Altus Air Force Base, Okla.

"The C-5 has been good to me," he said. "I have a long history with the aircraft and have made a lot of great memories. It's taken me all over the world."

Colonel Shepherd will continue those travels in the C-17, adding he's excited about the new aircraft arriving at Dover.

"It's an exciting time for the squadron," he said. "It's like getting handed the keys to your dad's new sports car. It's a great aircraft and paired up with the C-5 it will make a great team."

"That's the beauty of Dover's airlift team; we will be able to leverage the strengths of both weapon systems in one fight," added Lt. Col. Craig LaFave, chief of the 512th AW Program Integration Office. "Nothing in the world can haul cargo like the C-5; it can clear out even the busiest aerial ports. The Galaxy can haul 36 pallets and land at a forward base with longer runways. In contrast, the C-17 can carry up to 18 pallets and, like the C-5, can haul out-sized cargo. However, the C-17 has the ability to take its load to more austere and unimproved airfields."

The C-17 can land on a 3,500-foot dirt runway, taxi backwards out of tight parking spots, and can combat offload its cargo under fire. The C-17 can fly at 300 feet at high speed, and with the assistance of night vision goggles, crews can land on blacked-out assault zones.

Until the first C-17 arrives, the 326th AS aircrew members who have completed C-17 school are flying the aircraft at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., and Jackson Air National Guard Base, Miss., Colonel LaFave said. Several squadron members are currently in C-17 school, and all squadron members should complete the school by next year. It takes 100 days to train each crewmember, but up to 18 more months to fully season instructors and flight examiners.

The active duty unit here, the 436th Airlift Wing, also begins conversion in April. The wing's 3rd Airlift Squadron will fly the C-17 and its sister squadron, the 9th AS will continue to fly the C-5.

Data links give Airmen attack controllers 'big picture'

3/13/2007 - NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. (AFNEWS) -- A small group of Airmen are having a dramatic effect on the battlefield. They're in demand from everyone from Army squads and platoons to large defense contractors. Everyone wants a joint terminal attack controller (JTAC) on their team -- and with good reason.

They are crucial to putting air force bombs on target by controlling the air strikes the ground commander needs.

With less than 1,100 of them to go around the Air Force, their career field has been forced to come up with better ideas for fighting the war on terrorism. One of those "good ideas" is being tested here at Nellis in the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron and the Joint Datalink Information Combat Execution or JDICE.

"We needed a better way of working in our air support operation centers," said Staff Sgt. Erik Roberts, 422nd JTAC. "In the past, we've marked the positions of friendly forces on a map using tacks and symbols or markers."

That way of tracking troops is archaic in today's information age. The ASOC has been using digital means to track the battlefield but haven't had the capabilities the new system will provide at their fingertips.

Sergeant Roberts is currently testing and developing training plans and tactics for the Ground Mobile Gateway. The GMG is a humvee with a shelter that contains the tactical battlefield command and control functions, in real time, which will be used at the ASOC level. The ASOC is the primary control agency component of the Theater Air Ground System for the execution of close-air support. The ASOC coordinates and directs air support for Army or joint force land component operations. The GMG is an upgrade to the existing ASOC capabilities which incorporates joint-range extension data -- making visible the blue force and the red force assets on the battlefield.

"In a nut shell, it takes all the different tactical data links into one system and spits them out to the right people," said Sergeant Roberts.

It does that by tapping the Link 16 on the F-16 Fighting Falcons, F-15EsStrike Eagles and F/A-18 Hornets and the situational awareness data link on the A-10/OA Thunderbolts. Those two data links provide the friendly aircraft information to the GMG live - combined with the blue force tracker information and GPS coordinates from the ground troops and JTACs -- it provides a live common operating picture of the battlefield.

"I can now see the ground picture and the air picture as it's moving," said the seven-year veteran. "We let the machines do the math and let the warfighters make the decisions."

The "math" the JTACs do could be anything from calculating distance from an IP (initial point of entry for aircraft) to a target to calculating the kill radius for weapons effectiveness.

That takes a lot off the shoulders of a JTAC in the middle of a battle - doing "math in public" is often a challenge for many -- imagine when mortars are raining down and you're under intense small-arms fire. The machines will help eliminate fratricide that human-error played into previously.

Because the math will be more exact, the target area will decrease in size also.
"Using DPSS (Army version of Precision Strike Suite-Special Operations Forces), we're able to sweeten the target," said Sergeant Roberts. "Instead of 'which building' will be targeted, we're talking 'which window' in that building now."

The GMG has been tested in the past three red flag exercises here and at the Joint Expeditionary Force Experiment, or JEFX. The GMG is using for tests is "on steroids," and the ASOCs will receive a toned-down version when they start fielding them, Sergeant Roberts said. But, some JTAC units passing through Nellis for training are already gaining valuable insight they can use in combat.

"We used it during the last Red Flag in February with the 5th (Air Support Operations Squadron) and we worked with them on their digital TTPs (training, tactics and procedures), which they will use in their upcoming deployment," said Sergeant Roberts.

As for future deployments, the ground and air communications is continually expanding capabilities. The 1,094 JTACs will only become more valuable to the ground war as advances in the way they do business increases.

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Sailors known as the Leap Frogs, members of the U.S. Navy’s Parachute Team, conducted training for their upcoming 2007 schedule at Qualcomm Stadium on March 8.

The Leap Frogs perform precision freefall and parachute jumps in support of Navy-wide retention, recruiting and community relations programs.

“We travel around the [United States] to help keep the public aware of the Navy,” said Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Nix White, leading petty officer of the Leap Frogs. “Our main focus is to show public awareness and aid in the recruitment of Navy Special Warfare.”

The Leap Frogs generally hold performances 35 to 50 times annually. They practice for three months out of the year to ensure that safety measures are met.

“Safety is our number one concern,” said Special Warfare Operator 1st Class John Murray, a team member of the Leap Frogs. “Skydiving is an inherently dangerous sport already, and when you add in a stadium full of people, safety is paramount.”

The Leap Frogs are renowned for their exciting and complex skydiving formations. They bring a different type of halftime show to an event.

“It’s very exciting to see them do their stunts,” said Janell Lucken, a deputy sheriff for San Diego County. “Seeing the show has really instilled pride in me and has given me a very patriotic feeling.”

US Overflights/Russian Long Range Air Force

Following extracts taken from articles on Russian MOD website, dated 30 November 2006. Translated by Old Crow and submitted to MT's Milcom Blog for information and interest.

An observation flight over USA territory
Within the framework of the International Open Skies Agreement, The Russian Mission will carry out an observation flight over the United States during the period 11th to 16th March 2007. The flight will be accomplished by an observation TU-154M operating from Wright-Patterson airfield to a range of some 4900 kilometres. The observation flight over US territory will be carried out on completion of the current work being carried out by the Open Skies Mission which began on 6th March over Canadian territory, operating from Trenton airfield to a range of some 5400 kilometres. Russian, Canadian and American specialists aboard the TU-154M will be checking that all the agreed rules and regulations for such flights are observed. As far as the Russian specialists are concerned, this flight is the first one of the current year to be carried out over US and Canadian territory under the Open Skies agreement.

A briefing on the theme "65 years since the formation of Long Range Air Force - its composition and development" (The CinC Long Range Air Force - Lt General Igor' Khvorov - answers questions and comments). Date of article 12th March 2007.

There will be at least 10 live firings of airborne cruise missiles by LRA crews during the course of combat training in the current year. The intensity of LRA flight operations in the current year is at a very high level. During April, LRA crews will participate in Strategic Command-Staff training by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation; and in the summer, will take part in large-scale manoeuvres "Peaceful Mission 2007" within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation organisation at the Chebarkul' training area in the Volgo-Urals Military District. In addition, LRA aircraft will be actively participating in combat training involving the Joint Air Defence systems of the CIS - "Combat Community 2007" which will take place at the Ashuluk training area near Astrakhan' (No dates given). In the current year, the flying hours of crews has been increased to 5-10 hours, as a result of increased aviation fuel supplies reaching the units.

The Long Range Air Force is to take delivery of two modernised TU-160 missile carrying aircraft during 2007. The active process of refitting and modernisation of this type of aircraft has now begun. At the beginning of the year, two TU-160 were sent off to the Kazan' aircraft factory. At the beginning of April, practical bombing evolutions involving a highly
modernised TU-160, which was modernised during last year, will be carried out by a test-flight aircrew. The development of a new missile system - a cruise-missile with a higher speed - is taking place in parallel with the modernisation of already-existing missile weapons of the LRA. The CinC underlined that Russia had taken the world lead position in the area of cruise-missile systems of the "Air-Surface" and "Air-Air" category.

The Long Range Air Force carries out Combat Duty using rapid reaction readiness conditions. Russia's Long Range Aviation is carrying out Combat Duty with the missile-carrying aircraft on the ground, revealed the CinC of 37 Air Army of the Supreme High Command (Strategic Mission), Lieutenant-General Igor' Khvorov. "At the current time, we are maintaining Combat Duty posture with the aircraft on the ground. At the given signal, the duty crew is ready to carry out the combat mission against any point on the planet". The CinC also stated that the duty aircraft/crew did not have nuclear weapons on board, either on the ground or in the air. Present at a press-conference, the previous CinC LRA during the 60-80's - Hero of the Soviet Union, Colonel General of Aviation Vasilij Reshetnikov confirmed that during the years of the "Cold War", missile-carrying aircraft on Combat Duty did not have nuclear weapons on board.

Russian LRA aircraft are capable of suppressing elements of the US's anti-missile defence. Missions to suppress elements of the US's anti-missile defences in Europe can be carried out by all LRA aircraft, revealed CinC 37 Air Army. "In as
much as all the elements of the antimissile defence appear to be weakly defended/shielded objects, then all types of aircraft of our air force will be able to suppress them electronically and by physical destruction".

Ariane-5 Launches SkyNet 5A

A United Kingdom military communications satellite, SkyNet 5A, was launched on an Ariane-5ECA (V175)/535 rocket on March 11, 2007 from French Guyana. Skynet 5A carries an international designator 2007-007A/SSC#30793. Skynet 5A will operate in geostationary orbit at 1 degree west in the Clarke Belt.

The Skynet-5A (and 5B) satellites were designed by the European company Astrium SAS in its Stevenage and Portsmouth production centres in the UK, and integrated in Toulouse, for Astrium Ltd/Paradigm Secure Communications based in Stevenage, under the terms of a turnkey contract with the British Ministry of Defence. Paradigm will supply secure high-speed voice and data telecommunications facilities to the British Armed Forces, NATO and other countries. Skynet-A payloads were manufactured at the Astrium site in Porthmouth (UK). Final assembly and testing were carried out in the Toulouse plant (France). Skynet-5A and 5B will replace the current Skynet-4 satellites, also built by EADS Astrium for Paradigm Secure Communications, owner and operator of the spacecraft.

Skynet-5A is the first of the series 5 satellites to be launched by Arianespace, following the series 4 spacecraft. It is also the 26th military payload to fly on the European launcher.

Skynet 4B was launched in December 1988 on flight 27 on an Ariane 44LP, with Astra 1A,
Skynet 4C was launched in August 1990 on flight 38 on an Ariane 44LP, with Eutelsat II F1,
Skynet 4E was launched in February 1999 on flight 116 on an Ariane 44L, with Arabsat 3A,
Skynet-4F was launched in February 2001 on flight 139 on an Ariane 44L, with Sicral.
Skynet -5A forms part of a 3-satellite (Skynet-5A, 5B and 5C) communications system.

This system provides links with terminals on the ground, at sea and on board aircraft, with protected transmission for voice messages and high-speed digital data transmissions. When initially placed in service, the system will operate under the control of the US Air Force Satellite Control Facility (AFSCF) at the Sunnyvale station in the USA. Control will then be transferred to the British RAF ground segment at Oakhanger (with redundancy provided by the Sunnyvale facilities for a given period).

To facilitate manufacture, transport and assembly, the satellite structure has two independent platforms round a central tube on which the payload equipment is installed. The lower, Service Module (SM) carries the greater part of the Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), and the power units. This module is substantially derived from the Eurostar 3000 generic platform. The upper, Communication Module (CM) carries most of the communication equipment.

A Liquid Propellant apogee Engine (LAE) is used for orbit circularisation. Four identical tanks (two MMH and two NTO) are secured symmetrically round the central tube and supply the LAE mounted on the central cone, and the seven modules housing the main, redundant nozzles. The helium pressurisation tank is installed inside the central tube. The Service Module equipment is mounted on the North and South panels for the thermal dissipation units. The Chemical Propulsion System (CPS) is mounted on the bottom of the SM.

The North and South panels of the Communication Module (-Y, +Y) carry the travelling wave tubes (TWT) and other high thermal dissipation equipment, and like the Service Module panels also provide a heat-sink function. The batteries, which also require efficient temperature control, are mounted on the side walls of the SM.

The Communication Module (CM) carries two helicoidal UHF antennas. These will be deployed under remote control when the satellite is in geostationary orbit. The central part of the CM also carries an S band telemetry and telecommand (TTC) deployable mast antenna.

Electric power supply for the satellite is delivered by two solar panels, folded during the launch (on ± Y) and deployed after 3-axis stabilisation of the satellite (the outer panel of each wing is deployed one hour after separation from the launcher). Energy is supplied by a Li-lon cell battery in transfer orbit and during eclipses.

In-orbit pointing of the satellite is controlled by the ADCS, a simple and reliable system. Low-thrust (10N) thrusters are used in the pulse or continuous mode for housekeeping and attitude control operations.

USS New Orleans Commissioned in Namesake City



NEW ORLEANS (March 10, 2007) – Operations Specialist 2nd Class Israel Flores and Quartermaster 3rd Class August Sorvillo assigned to the amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18), prepare to raise the ship's commissioning pennant during the ship's commissioning ceremony. New Orleans is the second ship in the Navy’s new San Antonio class. As a critical element in future expeditionary strike groups, the ship will support the Marine Corps mobility triad, which consists of the LCAC (landing craft air cushion), the expeditionary fighting vehicle, and the Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft (MV-22). The ship also provides improved warfighting capabilities including an advanced command-and-control suite, increased lift-capacity in vehicle and cargo-carrying capability and advanced ship-survivability features. The ship holds the distinction of being the only ship in recent naval history built and commissioned in its namesake city.
