NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The Los Angeles fast-attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750) departed on a regularly scheduled six-month deployment from Naval Station Norfolk, Feb. 21.
While deployed, the crew of Newport News will execute the chief of naval operation's maritime strategy in supporting national security interests and maritime security operations.
Newport News is commanded by Cmdr. J. Carl Hartsfield, who became the submarine's 11th commanding officer April 20, 2010.
"Newport News Sailors are ready to execute the tasking directed by our operational commander and visit foreign nations as ambassadors of American good will," said Hartsfield. "We have worked tirelessly for over a year against accelerated training and maintenance schedules to give the nation a full deployment. The crew is well-trained and prepared.
"Our families have sacrificed much and supported us during this arduous work-up period. Family separation is never easy, but they are also prepared for the deployment because they are emotionally strong and informed. They understand that we have jobs important to our country that unfortunately require our absence," said Hartsfield.
Fast-attack submarines like Newport News have multi-faceted missions. They use their stealth, persistence, agility and firepower to deploy and support special force operations, disrupt and destroy an adversary's military and economic operations at sea, provide early strike from close proximity, and ensure undersea superiority.
Newport News has a crew complement of 15 officers and 127 enlisted. The submarine, the eighth ship to bear the name of the Virginia shipbuilding city, is 360 feet long, displaces 6,900 tons of water, and can travel in excess of 20 knots.

Essex ARG Completes Cobra Gold 2011

USS ESSEX, At sea (Feb. 19, 2011) (NNS) -- The Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) completed its part in the U.S and Kingdom of Thailand sponsored joint, multinational exercise Cobra Gold 2011 (CG 11) Feb. 19 in the Gulf of Thailand.
Throughout the exercise, militaries of the Kingdom of Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea and Malaysia worked with more than 7,200 U.S. service members to demonstrate the ability to rapidly deploy a joint task force to conduct combined operations at sea and ashore.
"We were able to achieve all our goals of interoperability and training by working side-by-side with our Thai counterparts," said Capt. Bradley Lee, commander, Amphibious Squadron 11 (PHIBRON 11). "We were additionally able to learn some lessons from our Thai counterparts and we greatly appreciate their hospitality to our Sailors and Marines."
CG 11 was punctuated with multiple training evolutions, including a non-combatant evacuation operation (NEO) exercise, a visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) exercise and a mock amphibious raid. The raid involved more than 11,000 personnel from various nations and employed almost all of the ARG's assets.
"The amphibious assault best exemplified the team work and bilateral training that we get from this exercise," said Lee. "The coordination of air space and sea space furthered our understanding of each other's tactics and techniques, which will prove invaluable should we have to do any of the scenarios in a real environment."
For the NEO exercise, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) and Assault Craft Unit 5 worked together to transport approximately 50 Japanese and American mock evacuees from Hat Yao Beach to Essex for medical care and processing.
The exercise demonstrated the ARG's ability to evacuate civilians during a time of crisis.
"The NEO exercise was an enormous undertaking, but it went very smoothly," said 1st Lt. Patrick Grainey, 31st MEU NEO team leader. "We utilized helicopters and amphibious craft from various countries and hit our timelines right on the dot."
The 31st MEU Force Reconnaissance Platoon conducted a VBSS exercise aboard USNS 1st Lt. Jack Lummus (T-AK 3011) Feb. 18. Fifty-six Marines fast roped from five CH-46E Sea Knight helicopters and searched the vessel for an on-board target designated in the training scenario.
"We conducted a fast, safe boarding and secured our target," said Marine Capt. Tyson N. Schroeder, assault force commander. "A good VBSS team is an invaluable asset to have when conducting operations at sea. There are a lot of challenges to taking control of a steaming ship, but our team proved they have what it takes."
The U.S. and the Kingdom of Thailand have been working together for 178 years. CG 11 was the latest in a continuing series of exercises designed to promote peace and security in the Western Pacific. This year's exercise marked the 30th anniversary of the CG series.
"I look forward to the next Cobra Gold and hope that we are able to build on the synergy that we achieved this year to create an environment even more integrated and efficient," Lee said.

Iranian Warships Exit the Suez Canal - Head Northeast Towards Syria

STRIKFORNATO Supports Bush Strike Group During JTF Exercise

NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Headquarters Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) personnel supported USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group's (GHWB CSG) Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) at Commander, U.S. Second Fleet, Feb. 11-21.
In support of JTFEX, representatives from Canada, Denmark, Greece, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, UK, and U.S., are working together in a scenario-driven tactical exercise that focuses on major combat operations for the GHWB CSG, and serves as the final deployment certification.
"The key mechanism is information exchange from the U.S. domain into the NATO domain, and how we're able to plan with that information," said U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Mark Coppess, STRIKFORNATO. "It breeds a level of interoperability that facilitates responsiveness if we do get the call and have to come together to execute the task we're given."
While STRIKFORNATO has had routine engagements with U.S. forces in the past, this is the first time STRIKFORNATO is participating as a component commander in a CSG certification.
"We practice as we play," said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Cyrus Jones, STRIKFORNATO. "If we don't practice now, we won't be able to get it together later, which is why it's so important to train early and often."
With different standard operating procedures, languages, data systems and forms, the NATO partners are learning how each country operates, so they can work in concert together.
"This is a great opportunity to get together and see how other nations do business, because we can learn from them and vice versa," said German Navy Senior Chief Julia Klemme, Communication and Information Systems deploy senior chief.

Bush, USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Gettysburg (CG 64), USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Anzio (CG 68), the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, as well as Spanish frigate ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbon (F 102), French Frigate Primauguet (D644) and French Submarine Perle (S606).

Enterprise Strike Group Transits Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Enters Gulf of Aden
USS ENTERPRISE, Red Sea (NNS) -- Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) transited the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and entered the Gulf of Aden, Feb. 18 in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).
Enterprise, the world's largest aircraft carrier, transited the strait along with guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) and fast combat support ship USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8).
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the Strait of Bab el-Mandab is a key chokepoint between the horn of Africa and the Middle East, and a strategic link between the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. It is located between Yemen, Djibouti, and Eritrea, and connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. Three to four billion barrels of oil per day are shipped through the Strait, making it a vital waterway for the global economy.
"The Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden are strategically important to the United States as an important sea lane for lawful shipping and transit," said Rear Adm. Terry B. Kraft, Commander of Enterprise CSG. "Our presence in the region helps ensure this freedom of navigation and the defense of these interests."
Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing One are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR to conduct maritime security operations and to provide support to operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the Strait of Bab el-Mandab is a key chokepoint between the horn of Africa and the Middle East, and a strategic link between the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean. It is located between Yemen, Djibouti, and Eritrea, and connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. Three to four billion barrels of oil per day are shipped through the Strait, making it a vital waterway for the global economy.
"The Bab el-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden are strategically important to the United States as an important sea lane for lawful shipping and transit," said Rear Adm. Terry B. Kraft, Commander of Enterprise CSG. "Our presence in the region helps ensure this freedom of navigation and the defense of these interests."
Enterprise and Carrier Air Wing One are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet AOR to conduct maritime security operations and to provide support to operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

Harry S. Truman Conducts Ammo Offload

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) completed a three week underway period with an ammunition offload, Feb. 17.
Sailors from Truman's Weapons department, moved more than 1,500 tons of ammunition to USS George H. W. Bush (CVN 77) and USNS Sacagawea (T-AKE 2) during four days of connected (CONREP) and vertical replenishments (VERTREP).
"Overall the ammo offload was very successful," said Capt. James Daniels, USS Harry S. Truman weapons officer. "We have worked hard the last six days and I am proud of the job my Sailors did out there."
After conducting more than two years of high-tempo carrier operations, Truman is scheduled to enter an extended maintenance period next month.
"Our goal was to get all of the ammunition out of our magazines and onto the Bush and the Sacagawea," said Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class (AW) Daniel Trombley. "We cannot pull into the yards to work on the ship with explosives on board."
Through long and careful planning, Truman's weapons department ensured the offload was a successful evolution.
"About halfway through the deployment, we started getting everything ready by preparing tags and bar codes for all the ordnance," said Trombley. "All the ordnance is sentenced according to the condition code to ensure it's ready for the next squadron that is going to use it."
The department began moving the ordnance from storage magazines to the hangar bay earlier this week in order to organize and separate it.
"It took many long hours of collaboration between the divisions and various teams to get it out of the magazines," said Lt. Chris Dillard. "But it was all necessary to ensure it was moved safely and to the right place. The entire team showed a lot of pride and professionalism in getting the job done."
Even though Weapons department played a major role in the ammunition offload, it took an all-hands effort to make it a successful evolution.
"It wasn't just weapons department out there," said Daniels. "It was a big team effort from every major department on board that made this a successful ammunition offload. We had fire teams manning hoses, security patrolmen on station, air department manning the con-flag stations and deck department doing the connected replenishment."

USAF CAP Observed Implementing New Regional ALE Networks
BRASSTOWN NC -- If you were following me on twitter (MilcomMP) yesterday (see the twitter feed on the right side at the top of this blog), you might have guessed I was a bit excited monitoring CAP HF frequencies.
I posted an article earlier in the month on how the Civil Air Patrol is reorganizing their HF ALE networks. See my post at http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com/2011/02/civil-air-patrol-reorganizing-their-hf.html.
Yesterday around 1100 EST (1600 UTC) I ramped up my PC-ALE software program on the main receiver and antenna, and left it on over night. Looking at my owlog this morning was a lot of fun, and I can now make a couple of interesting observations from my monitoring.
1) It was probably the most active I have seen the CAP ALE nets in a long time.
2) Looks like they are now implementing their new regional ALE network frequencies.
Normally I don't post my raw owlogs on this blog, but since the only thing I saw during the period were CAP stations (except for two addresses that I have flagged), I will make an exception. It will give you an idea of where you can start listening for CAP ALE activity.
I will be running my CAP QRG load for the next few days until I flush out all the new regional net freqs. It should be a lot of fun.

I posted an article earlier in the month on how the Civil Air Patrol is reorganizing their HF ALE networks. See my post at http://mt-milcom.blogspot.com/2011/02/civil-air-patrol-reorganizing-their-hf.html.
Yesterday around 1100 EST (1600 UTC) I ramped up my PC-ALE software program on the main receiver and antenna, and left it on over night. Looking at my owlog this morning was a lot of fun, and I can now make a couple of interesting observations from my monitoring.
1) It was probably the most active I have seen the CAP ALE nets in a long time.
2) Looks like they are now implementing their new regional ALE network frequencies.
Normally I don't post my raw owlogs on this blog, but since the only thing I saw during the period were CAP stations (except for two addresses that I have flagged), I will make an exception. It will give you an idea of where you can start listening for CAP ALE activity.
I will be running my CAP QRG load for the next few days until I flush out all the new regional net freqs. It should be a lot of fun.

Eagle Vision program garners key award for keen Earth observation

HNSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (AFNS) -- An Electronic Systems Center program has been named the winner of a prestigious award presented by officials from NASA and the U.S. Department of the Interior.
The agencies honored the Eagle Vision program with the 2010 William T. Pecora award during a Pentagon ceremony Feb. 15. Eagle Vision was recognized for domestic and international contributions to homeland security, humanitarian aid and natural disaster recovery efforts.
The system consists of five deployable satellite downlink stations that collect and process near-real-time optical and synthetic aperture radar imagery from commercial satellite constellations. It ensures that U.S. forces or disaster responders have current, high-resolution imagery of an area of interest.
"The system provides unclassified, releasable and high-quality imagery to first responders," said Capt. Jason Moll, the program manager. "These pictures are more than sufficient to meet disaster response effort needs."
Eagle Vision imagery also can be exploited quickly, often within a few hours, he said. Processing time, though, ultimately depends on the amount of refinement -- adding in street names, etc. -- required by the end-user.
The program developed as a result of calls from warfighters, following Operation Desert Storm, for timely, unclassified imagery they could share with combat allies.
"However, the system has demonstrated phenomenal capability outside the combat zone," Captain Moll said.
Among recent notable incidents, the Eagle Vision imagery collection team here sprang into action within hours of the 7.0 earthquake that devastated much of Haiti last year. Two Eagle Vision units provided Haiti earthquake first responders with images within 24 hours of the quake. Disaster response officials used the satellite imagery to plan, prioritize and optimize their actions, often comparing overlays that contrast current conditions with pre-disaster imagery.
The program also has aided many other natural disaster relief and humanitarian efforts, including responses to the California wildfires and to Hurricane Katrina. Outside the United States, the Eagle Vision team provided support to 19 different disaster relief efforts in six different countries during 2009.
Units also were deployed to Africa between 2004 and 2007 to collect commercial satellite imagery of Chad, Mauritania, Uganda and Niger to build a broad-area geospatial library for humanitarian support.
The award was presented to James G. Clark, Air Force director of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Innovations and deputy chief of staff for ISR. NASA Chief Scientist Waleed Abdalati and Anne Castle, Interior's assistant secretary for water and science, made the presentation.
"Eagle Vision is an excellent demonstration of how Earth observations from space support not only our soldiers and allies, but make a big contribution to our country's humanitarian efforts at home and abroad," Mr. Abdalati said. "One of NASA's primary missions, according to our founding charter, is expanding human knowledge of the Earth. Eagle Vision is an excellent example of the great achievements that can be realized in Earth science through inter-agency collaboration."
Officials from NASA and the Department of the Interior present individual and group Pecora Awards to honor outstanding contributions in the field of remote sensing and its application to understanding Earth. The award was established in 1974 to honor the memory of William T. Pecora, former director of the U.S. Geological Survey and undersecretary of the Department of the Interior.

Active Geomagnetic Activity Due at Any Time
The first interplanetary shock, driven by the CME from Sunday, is expected any time. Soon thereafter, the shock from Monday evening's R3/CME is due. Look for G1-G2 (and maybe periods of G3 if the following shock compresses and enhances the CME magnetic field). Geomagnetic storming should persist 24- 48 hours. Back at the Sun, Region 1158 is still hot and fast-growing, Region 1161 is producing small flares.
US Air Force C-17 seized over Argentine drug smuggling accusations
Argentina is accusing the US military of attempting to smuggle arms, drugs and spy equipment into the country under the pretext of a police training course.
The US military disputed the claims, denying an attempt to smuggle equipment into Argentina.
Argentine authorities claim to have seized nearly 1,000 cubic feet of undeclared items ranging from machine guns and ammunition to drugs and spy equipment. Argentine officials said the items were found on a US Air Force C-17 cargo plane along with material for a training course a US Special Forces team had been invited to give to the federal police.

USS Gettysburg Completes COMPTUEX

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and embarked Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 70, completed a successful Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) as part of the George H.W. Bush Strike Group, Feb. 10.
A critical step in pre-deployment training, COMPTUEX is designed to train the ship, embarked air wing and carrier strike group for combat readiness by simulating scenarios the strike group may face while deployed.
"If you don't prepare the Sailor while you are preparing the ship, you are preparing for failure," said Capt. Patrick O. Shea, USS Gettysburg commanding officer. "We organized our family readiness group, educated the families through the Ombudsman, plugged into the community support structures, and took a mindful look at all the Sailors' individual lifestyles to support the eventual longer periods underway."
During COMPTUEX, Gettysburg's primary mission was air defense. The ship was tasked to support Rear. Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, Carrier Strike Group Two; and maintain air superiority.
"We work very closely with the aircraft carrier itself, the air wing that is embarked and the other ships that are like us with air defense capabilities," said Shea. "We are able to coordinate all our activities in such a way that Adm. Tyson can move the aircraft carrier wherever she needs to move it in order to conduct missions that national tasking would have us do."
Completing COMPTUEX qualifies Gettysburg for open-ocean operations.
"COMPTUEX is essential," said Shea. "It proves to the Sailors that they have the endurance and fundamental skills. If they bring that together as a team, we can remain adaptable to changing circumstances, applying our skills to the mission ahead; regardless of what mission that might be."
Following the completion of COMPTUEX, Gettysburg pulled into Port Canaveral, Fla., for a weekend of liberty. ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- USS Gettysburg (CG 64) and embarked Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 70, completed a successful Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) as part of the George H.W. Bush Strike Group, Feb. 10.
A critical step in pre-deployment training, COMPTUEX is designed to train the ship, embarked air wing and carrier strike group for combat readiness by simulating scenarios the strike group may face while deployed.
"If you don't prepare the Sailor while you are preparing the ship, you are preparing for failure," said Capt. Patrick O. Shea, USS Gettysburg commanding officer. "We organized our family readiness group, educated the families through the Ombudsman, plugged into the community support structures, and took a mindful look at all the Sailors' individual lifestyles to support the eventual longer periods underway."
During COMPTUEX, Gettysburg's primary mission was air defense. The ship was tasked to support Rear. Adm. Nora Tyson, commander, Carrier Strike Group Two; and maintain air superiority.
"We work very closely with the aircraft carrier itself, the air wing that is embarked and the other ships that are like us with air defense capabilities," said Shea. "We are able to coordinate all our activities in such a way that Adm. Tyson can move the aircraft carrier wherever she needs to move it in order to conduct missions that national tasking would have us do."
Completing COMPTUEX qualifies Gettysburg for open-ocean operations.
"COMPTUEX is essential," said Shea. "It proves to the Sailors that they have the endurance and fundamental skills. If they bring that together as a team, we can remain adaptable to changing circumstances, applying our skills to the mission ahead; regardless of what mission that might be."
Following the completion of COMPTUEX, Gettysburg pulled into Port Canaveral, Fla., for a weekend of liberty. USS Truxtun Completes COMPTUEX, Begins Joint Task Force Exercise

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (NNS) -- The Arleigh Burke guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG 103) and its crew of more than 290 Sailors, departed Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Feb. 14, for Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) as part of the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group.
Truxtun traveled to Fort Lauderdale for a liberty call after completing a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), which tested unit-level and individualized warfare skill sets through a variety of simulated scenarios.
"We're experiencing a sample of the operational tempo for deployment," said Cmdr. Ron Walker, USS Truxtun executive officer.
During the port visit, the Fort Lauderdale and Broward Country Navy Leagues hosted a ceremony for more than 125 Sailors from Truxtun and USS Mitscher (DDG 57).
"It's always a great experience to be with Sailors," said Larry M. Ott, Fort Lauderdale Navy League member. "The Navy is standing watch for the peace of our country, and the defense of the world."
The Navy League of the United States is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating citizens about the importance of sea power to U.S. national security and supporting the men and women of the sea services and their families.
"Their hospitality was outstanding," said Damage Controlman 3rd Class Jason R. DeShields. "It meant a lot to me and my shipmates to have folks with great spirits welcome us. Thank you for the great evening before we start JTFEX."
JTFEX tests the capability of a carrier strike group to operate with multinational forces in a joint environment.
"Now that COMPTUEX is complete, we are focused on applying proven tactics and lessons learned toward the challenges and tasks ahead in JTFEX," said Walker. "We also have an added focus of ensuring our coalition partners are folded into the mission, and this is what makes a JTFEX truly joint on a multi-national level."
Along with USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), GHWB Strike Group assets participating in COMPTUEX/JTFEX include USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Gettysburg (CG 64), USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Anzio (CG 68), the squadrons of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, the Spanish frigate ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbón and the French frigate FS Primauguet (D 644). GHWB Strike Group is scheduled to depart on its first overseas deployment this spring
