Eisenhower Strike Group Completes First OFRP SUSTEX

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) completed the first sustainment exercise (SUSTEX) under the Navy's Optimized Fleet Response Plan (OFRP), April 11.

Prior to OFRP, carrier strike groups disaggregated following deployment and did not reintegrate until the work up cycle for the next deployment. Under OFRP, the carrier strike group remains intact throughout the integrated and sustainment phases.

The sustainment phase includes pre-deployment, deployment and post-deployment timelines, ensuring forces remain ready to deploy and surge if necessary. This maximizes the Navy's forward presence with available ship capacity.

Ike and its carrier strike group are underway participating in the sustainment exercise designed to maintain deployment readiness as part of the Navy's OFRP.

"OFRP balances forward presence requirements with maintenance and operational tempo in a way that ensures forces are ready to deploy, or in our case surge forward, if needed, with the right capabilities," said Rear Adm. Jim Malloy, commander of Ike CSG. "By having the CSG maintained at peak material readiness while continuing to train and operate together, we remain ready."

The two-week, live event driven exercise consisted of staffs, air wing and ships that deployed together, including the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3, CSG-10, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, guided-missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87), and guided-missile cruisers USS San Jacinto (CG 56) and USS Monterey (CG 61).

SUSTEX is designed to reverify, test and train the carrier strike group's ability to perform and effectively respond as an integrated team during simulated scenarios the group may encounter while deployed or during high-end warfare.

CSG-10 worked in conjunction with CSG-4 to ensure the most realistic training evolutions including simulated opposing forces in anti-air warfare, anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, strike warfare, irregular warfare, and maritime interdiction scenarios.

The lessons learned and best practices will be incorporated into future CSG SUSTEX.

"Our successful SUSTEX has set the initial framework for other carrier strike groups to adopt and modify to their own post-deployment training plan," Malloy said.

At the conclusion of the exercise, Malloy said, "The strike group's outstanding performance in this complex and challenging exercise speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of the officers and Sailors in our ships and squadrons, as they rapidly integrated for the first time in three months and quickly regained fighting form, honing warfighting readiness and maintaining the edge that made our deployment so successful."

Japan's jets deployed in response to Russian bombers

Japanese fighter jets were scrambled to warn six incoming Russian aircraft flying near Tokyo-claimed airspace, NHK reported Wednesday, local time.

The deployment of the aircraft of Japan's self-defense forces took place on Tuesday after two Russian Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers were seen near Japan's claimed portion of the Pacific Ocean.
Russia then sent two Ilyushin Il-38 fighters to an area near the coast of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, and that same afternoon deployed two anti-submarine warfare aircraft, the Tupolev Tu-142, to the Sea of Japan.

Two of the aircraft, most likely the Ilyushin Il-38 fighters, flew across the Pacific Ocean, then made a U-turn after reaching an offshore area near Tokyo.

The fighter jets returned to Russian territory following a course toward Hokkaido, according to the report.

Japanese airspace was not trespassed, the military said.

Tokyo is on alert for any further provocations in the region, particularly from North Korea.

Pyongyang most recently conducted a missile test that ended in failure, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the launch a grave threat to national security.

Japan is also coordinating an upcoming joint exercise with the U.S. aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, the Asahi Shimbun reported Wednesday, local time.

The supercarrier is en route to the Korean peninsula, but will make a stopover in Japan to conduct joint training, according to Japan's defense ministry.

The drill is to take place in the East China Sea, in an area west of Kyushu in southern Japan.

Unusual Navy Patrol Activity Sparks Fear of Foreign Sub Off SoCal Coast

Anti-submarine aircraft have been loitering over the same area off the California coast for hours, which is fueling speculation that a Russian – or a North Korean – submarine was spotted in the area.

While the report of a foreign vessel is unconfirmed at this point, the military patrol is apparently not part of a routine exercise due to the number of aircraft hovering over the same area and the late hours of operation.

The patrol includes multiple low-flying aircraft including a Navy EP-3E Aries II, which is used for electronic surveillance, a Navy P-3C Orion, which is used for submarine spotting, and a Boeing P-8 Poseidon used for anti-submarine warfare.Additionally, a Royal Canadian CP-140 Orion, also known for submarine spotting, joined the search.

While their is speculation about the above story by some on the net, other sources indicate that there is a multi-national military exercise currently being conducted off the SoCal coast.

U.S. Reroutes Warships Toward Korean Peninsula in Show of Force

WASHINGTON — The commander of American forces in the Pacific has ordered an aircraft carrier and several other warships toward the Korean Peninsula in a show of force by the Trump administration just days after North Korea tested another intermediate-range missile.

The officer, Adm. Harry B. Harris Jr., the head of the military’s Pacific Command, diverted the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and its wing of fighter jets from a planned series of exercises and port calls in Australia, the command said in a statement. The Vinson and three guided-missile destroyers and cruisers steamed out of Singapore on Saturday for their new mission in the Western Pacific.

USS Carl Vinson CSV transiting the South China Sea

The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) transits the South China Sea. The Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet. USS CARL VINSON, At Sea (NNS) -- Adm. Harry Harris, commander, U.S. Pacific Command, has directed the Carl Vinson Strike Group to sail north and report on station in the Western Pacific Ocean after departing Singapore April 8.

Carl Vinson Strike Group, including Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) and USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112), and Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), will operate in the Western Pacific rather than executing previously planned port visits to Australia. The Strike Group will remain under the operational control of U.S. 3rd Fleet as part of the 3rd Fleet Forward initiative.

Deployed from San Diego to the Western Pacific since Jan. 5, the Strike Group has participated in numerous bilateral exercises with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and Republic of Korea Navy, various maritime security initiatives, and routine patrol operations in the South China Sea.

For more than 70 years, the U.S. Navy has maintained a persistent naval presence in the Indo-Asia Pacific. The U.S. Navy is committed to continuing this forward presence, which is focused on stability, regional cooperation and economic prosperity for all nations. Carl Vinson has deployed to the region several times, starting with a deployment to the Western Pacific in 1983, a year after commissioning. Most recently in 2015, Carl Vinson conducted port visits and exercises with regional navies in the South China Sea.

U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Indo-Asia-Pacific theater of operations.

Russian warship steams toward US destroyers that launched Syria strikes

Fox News is reporting that one of the Russian Navy's most modern frigates  has entered the eastern Mediterranean Sea Friday and is heading toward the two U.S. Navy destroyers that launched missile strikes into Syria.

The Russian naval frigate, Admiral Grigorovich RFS-494, crossed through the Bosphorus Strait “a few hours ago” from the Black Sea, according to a U.S. defense official. 

The Admiral Grigorovich class (Фрегаты проекта 11356Р/М) is the latest class of frigates ordered by the Russian Navy for the Black Sea Fleet. Six ships (two batches of three ships) have been ordered so far to be built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. Some reports indicate that the Grigorovich uses the CW call sign of RGR79 and a voice call sign of Buryevestnik.

More Mystery US Registered Aircraft Over Iraq

Peter Harley, who follows our @MilcomMP twitter feed posted yesterday about a probable fake US registration/hex code. The registration N11710/A048C8 in the FAA database is reserved to NCH Flight Services in Tampa FLA. Of course a Google search drew a complete blank. Spec Ops or a three letter agency would be my best guess.

And now today Peter Harley posted on his twitter feed (@PeterHarley20) that he has spotted another mystery US aircraft registration flying over Iraq. Like yesterday's registration/hex code this one it is not a current US registered airframe.

The aircraft was seen flying over the same area as above using the registration N5064N with a hex code of A6532B. The FAA database says this registration is cancelled and not assigned. So is this an aircraft that was sold to some entity in Iraq and they have not replaced the US credentials with Iraqi reg? Or is this something else such as what I mentioned above, Spec Ops or an aircraft from a three letter US agency?
