Clearwater Coast Guard helps in Haiti

CLEARWATER - From the air the Coast Guards C-130 aircraft captured the massive devastation in Haiti.

Several Coast Guard units from Clearwater made the three-hour trip to the earthquake-shattered region.

Public Affairs Specialist Sondra-Kay Kneen witnessed the destruction firsthand.

"So many collapsed buildings so much damage between homes and businesses. It was hard to tell the difference between them because they were so damaged," Kneen said.

The Coast Guard Station in Clearwater sent several C-130 aircrafts as well as multiple MH 60 Jayhawk Rescue Helicopters. Early Wednesday morning crews accessed the damage and provided personnel relief where needed.

During its relief mission, the Coast Guard unit in Clearwater rescued nine U.S. Embassy workers from Port Au Prince.

Lt. Commander John Mixson says they were transported to Guantanamo Bay Navel Station for medical attention.

"All the injuries were described to me as crushing type or impact type injuries things subsequent to an earthquake," he added.

Mixson said they have the personnel and aircrafts ready to go at a moment's notice.

"Our C-130s are capable of logistic missions by moving personnel or relief supplies as well as conducting search patrols both on the shoreline and offshore should it be needed," Mixson added.

Mobility aircraft, personnel poised to support Haiti relief operations

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFNS) -- Air Mobility Command forces are actively working to support relief operations in Haiti after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated the Caribbean nation Jan. 12, AMC officials said here Jan. 13.

President Barack Obama directed a swift, coordinated effort from the U.S., saying "the people of Haiti will have the full support of the United States in the urgent effort to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble and to deliver the humanitarian relief of food water and medicine that Haitians will need in the coming days."

AMC identified several of its C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft for the relief operations according to officials, posturing them for immediate support. Additional aircraft will be made available as relief requirements become better known.

Brig. Gen. Robert K. Millmann Jr., who led Air Force mobility operations during relief efforts following hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike, has been selected to direct air mobility relief in Haiti.

Mission planning and command-and-control for the AMC portion of the humanitarian effort will be led by the 618th Tanker Airlift Control Center at Scott AFB. As AMC's hub for global operations, the 618th TACC plans, schedules and directs a fleet of nearly 1,300 mobility aircraft in support of strategic airlift, air refueling and aeromedical evacuation operations around the world.

In addition to supporting U.S. warfighters in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 618th TACC can transition at a moment's notice to support emerging global situations, including humanitarian airlift and aeromedical evacuation.

"Our role at the 618th TACC is to posture air mobility forces to be ready to respond quickly and effectively, and then plan and manage the missions as a coordinated effort," said Maj. Gen. Mark S. Solo, the 618th TACC commander. "We're currently assessing the state of the runway in Port-au-Prince and will plan our humanitarian air operations based on the number of aircraft we can safely operate into the airport at one time."

AMC officials already answered the call for several humanitarian operations in the past year, including in May 2009 when AMC officials delivered 30,000 H1N1 influenza prevention kits to the governments of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua to prevent the spread of the virus.

A major part of the humanitarian effort includes providing medical personnel, equipment and supplies needed to respond to the disaster, something the 618th TACC has already started coordinating. Current plans call for establishing a mobile aeromedical evacuation staging facility at a yet-to-be-determined location with multiple aeromedical crews standing by to administer emergency medical care and fly patients to more robust care, if required.

Another key player in AMC's support to Haitian relief operations will be the 621st Contingency Response Wing, based out of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. The 621st CRW staff maintains a ready corps of light, lean and agile mobility support forces who are prepared to rapidly deploy anywhere in the world to open airfields and establish, expand, sustain and coordinate air mobility operations.

"Air Mobility Command has the unique ability to respond within hours anywhere in the world," General Solo said. "It's an extremely fulfilling part of the mission, and we're going to be working around the clock on our 24-7 operations floor to provide the maximum amount of support possible for relief efforts."

Another ALE HF network to watch for possible activity associated with the Haiti earthquake relief effort is the US Department of State HF Emergency and Evacuation Network (mode ALE/USB).

US Army South Flight Following Service (SKYWATCH) Net, Soto Cano AB, Honduras

Joint Task Force-Bravo is located at Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras. JTF-Bravo is comprised of approximately 550 US military personnel and more than 650 US and Honduran civilians. They work in six different areas including the Joint Staff, Air Force Forces (612th Air Base Squadron), Army Forces, Joint Security Forces and the Medical Element. 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, a US Army South asset, is a tenant unit also based at Soto Cano.

The Air Force Forces has among its functions; weather forecasting, fire protection, and maintaining a 24-hour C-5-capable runway. The Army Forces operate finance, food service and transportation. Joint Security Forces is comprised of Air Force, Army and Marine force protection personnel who patrol the base and downtown areas frequented by US servicemembers.

Since 1999, the 1-228th "Winged Warriors" have assumed the complete role of a Theater Aviation Battalion. The total force structure consists of a Headquarters & Headquarters Company (Phantoms); Alpha Company (Talons) with 10x UH-60A aircraft; Bravo Company (Sugarbears) with 4x CH-47D aircraft; and the U.S. Army Air Ambulance Detachment (Witchdoctors) with 4x UH-60A aircraft. The Battalion's Command & Control Detachment (Nomads) supports U.S. Army South with 2x UH-60A (C2) aircraft.

The 1-228th Aviation Regiment Conducts Aviation Operations Throughout USSOUTHCOM's Area of Responsibility with UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The purpose of the battalion is to promote and execute aviation operations to facilitate the CINC SOUTH's strategy of engagement and security in the theater. The battalion is capable of deploying and sustaining operations throughout the theater. Typical missions conducted by the battalion include: counter drug operations, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, air movement of people equipment and supplies, Aero-medical evacuation, and limited search and rescue. The command structure of the battalion is capable of exercising command and control for Commander, USARSO of army aviation assets deployed to the theater. In addition to these operational missions, the battalion participates in selected special events and VIP support missions.

Skywatch, the Army’s Airspace Infomation Center, monitors flights and provides timely communication to aircrews.

Their mission is to provide U.S Army South and U.S. Southern Command with direct flight support on all DoD and other government aircraft positioning 24 hours a day.
Skywatch maintains data for all aircraft operating within the visual flight rules of the USSOUTHCOM area of responsibility. They also assist in the coordination and tracking of all medical evacuations in Central America. These monitoring procedures are done through aircraft flight checks every 15 minutes while flights are in operation over the AOR and are maintained until aircraft reach their final destinations. Skywatch is manned with eight military members and eight civilians.

Vinson Deploys to Respond to Haiti Earthquake

MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) has been ordered to deploy to Haiti to conduct Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Response (HA/DR) missions Jan. 13. Currently, Vinson is underway in the Atlantic Ocean, and will briefly loiter off the coast of Mayport to receive equipment and supplies.

Along with Vinson, USS Bataan (LHD 5) embarked with Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU 22), USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), and USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) were ordered to get underway as soon as possible. Additionally, USS Normandy (CG 60), USS Underwood (FFG 36) and USS John L. Hall (FFG 32) will deploy from their homeports and stand ready to assist, while USNS Comfort (T-AH-20), homeported in Baltimore, Md., is preparing to get underway, if required.

A Navy P-3 Orion aircraft from the Patrol Squadron (VP) 26 detachment operating from Cooperative Security Location (CSL) Comalapa, El Salvador, took off early this morning to conduct aerial surveys of the area affected by the earthquake.

USS Higgins (DDG 76) based out of Naval Station San Diego will arrive on station off the coast of Haiti tomorrow to provide afloat logistical services for the Coast Guard helicopters.

Additionally, various units are prepared to provide assistance with sea-based helicopters, to include H-53 Sea Stallions and H-60 Seahawks.

As the Navy component command of U.S. Southern Command, NAVSO's mission is to direct U.S. Naval forces operating in the Caribbean, Central and South American regions and interact with partner nation navies within the maritime environment. Routine operations include counter-illicit trafficking, theater security cooperation, military-to-military interaction and bilateral and multinational training.

Lincoln Underway for Sea Trials

BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) departed Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) in Bremerton, Wash., for sea trials after an intensive nine-month maintenance period Jan. 13.

The underway period for sea trials and other testing and training is expected to last approximately five days, ending in the successful completion of the ship's planned incremental availability at PSNS.

Once sea trials are complete, Lincoln will return to its homeport of Everett, Wash., for further training and integration with the ships and aircraft of Carrier Strike Group 9.

"Sea trials are a culmination of a year's worth of diligent planning and hard work," said Lincoln's Commanding Officer, Capt. Patrick D. Hall. "Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Air Forces, and the Lincoln crew really came together as a team to make this a successful maintenance period."

The more than 90 checks and exercises planned for sea trials include a ship-wide Navy Occupational Safety And Health inspection and review of the ship's asbestos control program.

An inspection of the ship's catapults and jet blast deflectors will be conducted, as well as inspections of the ship's berthings, operational checks of aviation fueling systems, and demonstrations of search and rescue equipment.

Firefighting capabilities, food service facilities, communication, radar, and navigation equipment will also be evaluated to determine the ship's mission readiness.

"I'm extremely proud of what this crew has accomplished over the past year," said Hall. "Lincoln is ready to become operational, execute our nation's maritime strategy and rejoin the fleet as a global force for good."

SOUTHCOM to Deploy Assessment Team to Haiti

MIAMI (NNS) -- A team of 30 people from U.S. Southern Command will deploy to Haiti in support of U.S. relief efforts in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake Jan. 12.

The team, which includes U.S. military engineers, operational planners, a command and control group and communication specialists, will arrive in Haiti Jan. 13 on two C-130 Hercules aircraft.

The team is scheduled to work with U.S. Embassy personnel as well as Haitian, United Nations and international officials to assess the situation and facilitate follow-on U.S. military support.

Other immediate response activities include;
- At first light today, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter evacuated four critically injured U.S. Embassy staff to the Naval Station Guantanamo, Cuba, hospital for further treatment.

- Elements of the U.S. Air Force 1st Special Operations Wing are deploying today to the international airport at Port au Prince, Haiti, to provide air traffic control capability and airfield operations. They are expected to arrive in Haiti this afternoon.

- A U.S. Navy P-3 Orion aircraft from the Forward Operating Location at Comalapa, El Salvador, took off early this morning to conduct an aerial reconnaissance of the area affected by the earthquake.

- The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), is underway and expected to arrive off the coast of Haiti Jan. 14. Additional U.S. Navy ships are underway to Haiti.

Florida-based SOUTHCOM is closely monitoring the situation and is working with the U.S. State Department, United States Agency for International Development and the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance and other national and international agencies to determine how to best respond to this crisis.

SOUTHCOM is well versed at providing humanitarian assistance in the region. Since 2005, the command has led U.S. military support to 14 major relief missions, including assistance to Haiti in September 2008. During that mission, U.S. military forces from USS Kearsarge and other units airlifted 3.3 million pounds of aid to communities that were devastated by a succession of major storms.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson is headed toward earthquake-devastated Haiti and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow to provide airlift support for the disaster-response mission, the commander of U.S. Southern Command reported Jan. 13.

Meanwhile, Gen. Douglas Fraser said, SOUTHCOM officials are "seriously looking" at deploying a large-deck amphibious ship with a 2,000-member Marine expeditionary unit to provide disaster response and, if required, to help maintain security.

Several other Defense Department ships and Coast Guard vessels, from small ships to destroyers to cutters, also are headed toward Haiti, some with limited humanitarian assistance supplies and helicopters aboard.

In addition, an 82nd Airborne Division brigade and "various forces around the armed forces" have been put on alert, ready to deploy if needed to support the effort, the general said.

The actions are part of a "very robust effort" under way to ensure the military is ready to respond to requirements identified through ongoing assessments, General Fraser explained during news briefings Jan. 13 at the Pentagon and the State Department.

"We don't know precisely what the situation is on the ground, so we are leaning forward to provide as much capability as quickly as we can to respond to whatever the need is when we get there," he said.

Meanwhile, the military is taking accountability of its own 64 troops assigned to Haiti. Most are part of the military liaison group there or support the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti, General Fraser said.

General Fraser is leading military support to the disaster response mission, being coordinated through the U.S. Agency for International Development and State Department's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance.

His deputy military commander, Lt. Gen. P.K. "Ken" Keen, was on the ground in Haiti when the earthquake struck, and is providing the initial on-the-ground military command.

The initial thrust in the operation is on assessing the situation on the ground to determine what's needed and where, and to provide communications and command-and-control equipment needed to support relief efforts, General Fraser said.

Toward that end, SOUTHCOM is deploying a 30-person team to Haiti this afternoon to support U.S. relief efforts.

Two Puerto Rico Air National Guard C-130 Hercules aircraft will deliver the team, made up of U.S. military engineers, operational planners, a command-and-control group and communication specialists. Once on the ground, they will work with U.S. Embassy personnel as well as Haitian, U.N. and international officials to assess the situation and facilitate follow-on U.S. military support.

"From practice, we've found that the assessments are critical to making sure we get the right equipment in there and make the recovery efforts and the life-supporting efforts as efficient as possible," General Fraser explained.

Meanwhile, the C-130s are transporting civilian search-and-rescue teams to Haiti, he said.

SOUTHCOM officials reported other immediate response activities:

--A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter evacuated four critically injured U.S. Embassy staff to Naval Station Guantanamo, Cuba, hospital for further treatment earlier today;

--Elements of the Air Force's 1st Special Operations Wing will arrive in Haiti this afternoon to provide air traffic control capability and airfield operations at the Port-au-Prince airport; and

--A Navy P-3 Orion aircraft took off from Comalapa, El Salvador, early this morning to conduct an aerial reconnaissance of the area affected by the earthquake.

An important initial thrust is on getting communications and command-and-control assets into Haiti to support relief operations, General Fraser told reporters.

He noted that the U.N. mission's headquarters was severely damaged during the earthquake, with much of its communications equipment lost.

As communications and other support goes to Port-au-Prince airport to restore it to full functioning, assessment teams will also evaluate the port facilities to determine if they are operational to receive incoming aid.

The USS Carl Vinson was on a training mission when it was ordered to Haiti to support the effort. It will transit through Mayport, Fla., to take on additional humanitarian support supplies and helicopters before arriving in Haiti later tomorrow, General Fraser said.

The arrival of a yet-underdetermined amphibious ship, probably a couple of days after the Vinson, will provide a broader range of capability to move supplies around and provide lift capability to support the effort, he said.

While not ruling out a deployment of the hospital ship USS Comfort, General Fraser said the amphibious ship could provide much of the same medical capability.

In the meantime, all available military assets remain on the table as a clearer picture begins to emerge about what's needed, the general said.

"We're focused on the life-saving measures that we need to do there -- the assessment, the emergency response -- and then looking at what the humanitarian and disaster relief requirements are and providing international support to Haiti, to help them through this significant disaster," he said.

National Guard Stands Ready to Help in Haiti

ARLINGTON, Va., Jan. 13, 2010 - The Army and Air National Guard are prepared to help in the humanitarian relief effort in Haiti, the chief of the National Guard Bureau said today.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Haitian people, who have been devastated by this earthquake," said Air Force Gen. Craig R. McKinley. "The National Guard stands ready to work with the Army and the Air
Force to provide humanitarian assistance to Haiti when called upon."

Specifically, the Puerto Rico National Guard, which is one of the closest U.S. territories in the area, has personnel and equipment on standby if they are needed.

The Puerto Rico Army Guard has alerted three UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from the 1/111th Aviation Company along with 12 crew members, and the Puerto Rico Air Guard has called up two C-130 aircraft from the 156th Airlift Wing with 21 support personnel, said Army Capt. Paul Dahlen, the Puerto Rico Guard's public affairs officer.

He said the aircraft have anticipated deployment times, but officials are waiting for final approvals.

U.S. Southern Command is coordinating with the State Department and U.S. Agency for International Development to assess the situation after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake left perhaps thousands of people dead and many more trapped beneath collapsed buildings, officials reported.

"If we are asked by the Department of State and the Department of Defense to provide assistance, we would do so in a supporting role," Southcom officials said in a written statement. The USAI D's Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance is the lead U.S. government agency for U.S. disaster relief efforts, the statement noted.

Command officials said they will deploy a team of 30 people to Haiti today, including military engineers, operational planners and a command and control group and communication specialists on the two C-130 Hercules aircraft from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard. The team will work with U.S. Embassy personnel as well as Haitian, United Nations and other officials to assess the situation to provide follow-on support.

The last time the National Guard supported relief efforts in Haiti was 2008, when eight Air National Guard medical personnel were onboard the USS Kearsarge when it was diverted from its Continuing Promise mission to Haiti, which was devastated by Hurricane Ike.

"With nearly 450,000 people throughout 54 states and territories, the
National Guard can deploy and respond to any disaster as needed, anywhere," said Walt Debany, a spokesman for the National Guard Bureau.

According to news reports, the quake was felt in the Dominican Republic as well as Guantanamo Bay.

Arkansas and Rhode Island Guardsmen currently deployed to Joint Task Force Guantanamo felt the tremors from yesterday's earthquake in Haiti. Air Force Lt. Col. Denise Boyer, commander of the 474th Expeditionary Combat Engineering Squadron, which is made up of about 50 Air National Guard members, said she was in her tent when the earthquake hit yesterday after duty hours.

"The tent shook, the floor shook, everything kind of rumbled around," she said. "Honestly, it felt like a big 18-wheeler rolled by outside."

Boyer had experienced seismic activity before at Guantanamo, but "this was definitely bigger than what we had in the past."

The Navy engineers there are dealing with some water breaks, but Boyer said her engineers are not responsible for any hard structures on the base.

"Tents fare a lot better in an earthquake," she said.

More Fort Hood Soldiers to Deploy to Afghanistan

WASHINGTON - The 4th Infantry Division's 4th Combat Aviation Brigade will deploy to Afghanistan this summer as part of the surge of American troops to the country, Defense Department officials said here today.

The deployment order brings the number of U.S. troops notified for deployment to 25,000. President Barack Obama promised to send 30,000 additional U.S. forces to the nation this year.

The 2,600-man 4th Combat Aviation Brigade is based at Fort Hood, Texas, and makes up the greatest part of this deployment. Another 500 support-forces soldiers also are deploying. Officials did not say where the soldiers ultimately will be based in Afghanistan.

On Dec. 7, Pentagon officials announced the first deployment as part of the Afghan surge. Officials said 16,000 servicemembers would deploy, including a reinforced Marine battalion with about 1,500 Marines from Camp Lejeune, N.C. That unit has arrived in Regional Command South in Afghanistan.

Camp Lejeune also will send Regimental Combat Team 2 with 6,200 Marines in early spring 2010. An 800-member Marine headquarters unit from Camp Pendleton, Calif., also will deploy in the spring.

The 10th Mountain Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team, based in Fort Drum, N.Y., will deploy in the spring to train and mentor Afghan security forces.

On Dec. 22, Pentagon officials announced the 101st Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team from Fort Campbell, Ky., will deploy in early spring, along with another 2,600 support personnel.

Pentagon officials said they expect to identify the last of the troops to deploy with the surge soon.

About 70,000 American forces are in Afghanistan today, along with 43,000 allied troops from 42 countries. Ultimately, more than 100,000 U.S. troops and 50,000 coalition troops will be in the country.

Joint basing at Charleston moves forward with activation of 628th ABW

CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AFNS) -- Eighteenth Air Force officials activated the 628th Air Base Wing during an assumption-of-command ceremony Jan. 8 at Charleston AFB.

The activation of the 628th ABW is the latest step toward the stand up of Joint Base Charleston Jan. 31.

The joint base stand up in late January will begin the next phase in an ongoing process to merge Charleston AFB with Naval Weapons Station Charleston as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure Program.

A total of 12 joint bases across the Department of Defense will have been established when the last one stands up.

The activation ceremony for the 628th ABW was accompanied by the inactivation of two groups under the 437th Airlift Wing, the prior host unit, and their immediate activation as the new 628th Mission Support and 628th Medical Groups under the 628 ABW.

The 437th Airlift Wing had served as the base's host unit since 1991.

Aside from the inactivation of the two groups previously under the 437th AW, the 437th Aerial Port Squadron was realigned under the 437th Maintenance Group. Also, many wing staff agencies previously assigned to the 437th AW will now operate under the 628th ABW.

The organizational structure of other the tenant units on Charleston AFB will remain unchanged.

The leaders of the 437th AW will continue their mission to command assigned airlift and supporting units, providing for the airlift of troops and passengers, military equipment, cargo and aeromedical airlift; and to participate in operations involving the airdrop of troops, equipment and supplies when required.

As the general officer officiating the activation ceremony for the 628th ABW, Lt. Gen. Robert Allardice, 18th Air Force commander, formally introduced Col. Martha Meeker, the first commander of the 628th ABW, citing the depth of her intellect, warrior spirit and capacity for leadership.

"For the complexities of this great merger that we have, pulling together the best of what the Navy has to offer and the best of what the Air Force has to offer, we in the Air Force chose one of our great leaders, Col. Martha Meeker, to come down to Charleston ... so that this great day today, she could take command of the now-established 628th ABW," he said.

As the 628th ABW commander, Colonel Meeker will direct host unit duties for the tenant units of Charleston AFB, and after Jan. 31, for Naval Weapons Station Charleston tenant units as well, as they are merged into Joint Base Charleston.

With the activation of two groups under the 628th ABW, the air base wing's primary duties will be to provide base support for approximately 80,000 personnel, including active-duty and Reserve military members, civilian government employees and contractors, military family members and retirees.

Services provided by the 628th ABW will include base support provisions, such as housing and facilities maintenance, security, childcare, public works, communications, finance, logistics, medical support, personnel, public affairs, legal, food service, contracts and recreation.

The servicing agencies under the wing will employ approximately 2,100 personnel.

In her first public address as 628th ABW commander, Colonel Meeker spoke about heritage, continued commitment and hard work.

"On this day in 1790, George Washington gave the nation's first State of the Union address. A fledging institution itself, the United States had fought hard for its freedom, and President Washington began his remarks by reaffirming his belief in the common defense that made that freedom happen. For as in his words, preparing for war is the most effectual means to preserving the peace," said Colonel Meeker.

"When we look at his words today, all our Airmen, our Sailors, our Soldiers and Marines, and everyone here who makes up Joint Team Charleston, are taking their place today in our common defense. At the center of that Joint Team Charleston, you'll find now the 628th (ABW)," she said.

General Allardice also remarked on the impact the Charleston military community has had, which dates back to the Revolutionary War, and its current role in supporting military and humanitarian operations anywhere in the world.

Joint Base Charleston, he said, will continue that impact with greater efficiency.

"Nothing happens in the world without Charleston from a military perspective," he said. "This is a national treasure here at Charleston ... I know you are focused on preserving that, on building that and on establishing more and more of this great power projection platform that you represent here at Charleston."

Coast Guard announces decision to end LORAN-C

The Coast Guard officially published its decision last Thursday to discontinue its radio navigation tool, known as LORAN-C, after 66 years of operation.

The decision to decommission the Long Range Aids to Navigation program was published in the Federal Register. The Coast Guard will begin shutting off the North American signal Feb. 8 and finish the process by Oct. 1. The Coast Guard operates 24 LORAN-C stations.

NORAD Launches F-16s Due to Unruly Passenger

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - For the second straight day, fighter jets under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command launched in response to trouble with a passenger aboard a commercial airliner.

Two F-16 fighters launched at 11:44 a.m. MST today in response to reports of an unruly passenger aboard Air Tran Flight 39 from Atlanta bound for San Francisco.

Yesterday, F-15 fighters intercepted Hawaiian Airlines Flight 39 after a passenger caused a disturbance on the plane, which returned to Portland, Ore.

In today's incident, the fighters arrived over Colorado Springs Municipal Airport in Colorado as the pilot of the commercial airliner landed the Boeing 737 there safely at about noon MST, where the plane was met by law enforcement officers.

USS North Carolina to Homeport in Pearl Harbor

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) -- Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet announced Jan. 6 that USS North Carolina (SSN 777) will be the third Virginia-class submarine homeported at Naval Station Pearl Harbor.

Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny announced that North Carolina will join fellow Virginia-class submarines USS Hawaii (SSN 776) and USS Texas (SSN 775) at Submarine Squadron 1 in summer 2010.

North Carolina's keel was laid May 22, 2004, and the submarine's official commissioning ceremony was held May 3, 2008.

Measuring 377 feet long, weighing 7,800 tons when submerged and with a complement of more than 130 crew members, she is the fifth ship to be named in honor of the Tar Heel State. North Carolina's crew is excited to represent the namesake state both at home and abroad.

The state-of-the-art submarine is capable of supporting a multitude of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, strike, naval special warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, irregular warfare and mine warfare.

Recognizing the importance of the Pacific region and the increased threat posed by the proliferation of submarines in the western Pacific, the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review mandated that 60 percent of the U.S. Navy's submarines be homeported in the Pacific by the end of 2010.

F-15s Scramble to Escort Hawaiian Airlines Flight

SALEM, Ore., - Two Oregon Air National Guard F-15 fighters, under the direction of North American Aerospace Defense Command, intercepted Hawaiian Airlines Flight 39 yesterday after a passenger caused a disturbance on the plane and the pilot decided to return the aircraft to Portland.

The F-15s, stationed at Portland Air National Guard Base, escorted the aircraft until it landed at Portland International Airport without incident at about 1:15 p.m. PST, where the plane was met by law enforcement and the Transportation Security Administration.

The Oregon National Guard's 142nd Fighter Wing guards the skies from northern California to the Canadian border on 24-hour alert as part of the North American Air Defense system. The F-15 fighter jets become a federal asset once alerted, placing them under presidential authority, officials said.

Revolutionary Ship Readies for Commissioning

MOBILE, Ala. (NNS) -- Pre-Commissioning Unit Independence (LCS 2) will be commissioned Jan. 16.

Advanced technology, unique manning, and a very recognizable tri-hull – at first glance, nearly everything about Independence's steep angles, high bridge, and aluminum construction appears to be the first of its kind. That impression continues inside, where a spacious mission module bay is reached by stairs instead of shin-banging ladders, and down below, where four water jets compliment two diesel and two gas turbine engines.

LCS is a fast, agile, mission-focused ship that demonstrates the latest in naval warfighting technology. The ship is specifically designed to defeat "anti-access" threats in shallow, coastal water regions, including fast surface craft, quiet diesel submarines, and mines. To meet the combatant commander's increased demand for mission-tailored forces packages, LCS features an interchangeable modular design that allows the ship to be reconfigured to meet mission requirements.

"The ship is large enough and flexible enough to hold just about anything you could think of in terms of coastal and littoral warfare," said Cmdr. Michael Riley, commanding officer, Gold Crew. "If you build modules we could carry them. That's one of the true unique things about Independence. I think we are going to expand way beyond the initial three mission sets the ship was designed to do, and of course do those extremely well."

The Sailors who will bring the ship to life on Jan. 16 are part of an innovative manning reconstruct that reduces crew size, demanding each Sailor maintain high levels of proficiency in multiple fields, and optimizes ship operability with multiple crews. Independence is manned by two rotational crews, "blue" and "gold," of 40 Sailors each. These crews are further augmented by detachment specialists for each of the mission modules.

"We ask every one of our Sailors to be on their game all the time, and in terms of manpower provide a great product," said Cmdr. Curt Renshaw, commanding officer, Blue Crew. "That team has come together, and with this great product and this great ship, we will be ready to take her and do the nation's tasking, hopefully sooner rather than later."

"Both LCS 1 and LCS 2 were designed to meet the same requirements with reduced manning," said Rear Adm. Jim Murdoch, LCS program manager. "In the last several years, we have conducted a great deal of assessment to be sure we implement this shift without any loss of efficiency or increase in vulnerability. Manning of the ship is centered around the question of whether you have enough people to fight it."

"On other ships, Sailors from every department help in the kitchen, and the cooks do just that – they cook," said Renshaw. "On LCS, we have three cooks who can also shoot a gun, fight a fire, manage systems, and stand anti-terrorism watches. Our Sailors have a lot of skills."

"My best machine-gunner is a culinary specialist; my best emergency medical technician is an electronics technician," Riley said. "We've really brought out the best in the Sailors we have on board."

The rotational crew model is already proving effective aboard USS Freedom (LCS 1), Independence's predecessor in the LCS class. Freedom is currently readying for her maiden deployment, accelerated approximately two years. The Navy expects to learn key operational lessons about Freedom in a deployment setting, and to integrate those lessons into the larger LCS fleet, projected to eventually reach 55 ships.

While Freedom prepares for early deployment, Independence looks forward to commissioning. The decision to commission the ship in Mobile, Ala., where construction began nearly four years ago, is testament to the incredible support the community has lent the Navy.

"By commissioning in Mobile, we are also fortunate to have many of the required resources in place to allow for detailed and efficient planning for this exciting occasion," said Renshaw.

"The city of Mobile has really made us feel welcome," Riley said. "I want to extend my gratitude for everything they have been doing and continue to do for us."

Following commissioning, Independence will conduct further testing and evaluation before eventually heading toward its homeport in San Diego.

CanForce Snow Birds 2010 Airshow Schedule Update 2

15 WING MOOSE JAW, SASKATCHEWAN - The Canadian Forces Snowbirds have officially released their 2010 show schedule.

During the 2010 season, the Snowbirds are scheduled to participate in over 33 air shows in 30 locations, proudly telling the Canadian Forces story through their inspirational flying. As ambassadors of the Canadian Forces and Canada, the team will travel as far North as Anchorage, Alaska, as far South as Daytona Beach, Fla., as far West as Victoria, B.C. and as far East as Halifax, N.S. June 12 and 29 the Snowbirds will be in Victoria, B.C. and Halifax, N.S., respectively to celebrate the Centennial of the Navy.

During the team's 39-year history, the Snowbirds have performed in about 2,195 air shows, before almost 135 million spectators.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds' mission is to represent the skill professionalism and teamwork of the Canadian Forces and to inspire Canadians to consider an exciting career in Canada's military. This schedule is subject to change without notice and is weather permitting, for everyone's safety.

US Navy Blue Angels Official 2010-2011 Schedule Update 2

Below is the first airshow schedule posted here on MMP for the 2010 season.

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, The Blue Angels, announces its show schedules for the 2010 and 2011 season at the annual International Council of Airshows convention. Following winter training, the team begins the season March 13 at Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro, CA and will conclude the season Nov. 13 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, FL. The Blue Angels are scheduled to perform 67 shows at 35 locations throughout the United States in 2010.

Demonstration sites are selected in support of the Department of Defense objectives and in the interest of the armed services with safety as the primary consideration. Performances greatly assist in the recruiting and retention goals for the military services, enhance esprit de corps among uniformed men and women and demonstrate the professional skills and capabilities of the Naval services to the American public and U.S. Allies.

In a break from tradition, the Blue Angels have adopted a two-year scheduling program to allow show sites more time for planning, advertising and fund-raising. USAF Thunderbirds 2010 Official Show Schedule Update 1

Officials from the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, "Thunderbirds," have announced its 2010 airshow schedule.

The team's 57th show season is scheduled to take them to more than 65 shows in 27 states and Canada.

Lt. Col. Case Cunningham will join the team as commander and leader for the team and fly the No. 1 position.

Other officers beginning their first season with the team are Thunderbird No. 3, Capt. Chad Shenk, right wing; Thunderbird No. 6, Capt. Aaron Jelinek, opposing solo; Thunderbird No. 8, Maj. John Gallemore, advance pilot and narrator; Thunderbird No. 9, Capt Thom Bowden, flight surgeon.

The new team members will join returning officers Thunderbird No. 2, Maj. John Baum, left wing; Thunderbird No. 4, Maj. Sean Gustafson, slot; Thunderbird No. 5, Maj. Rick Goodman, lead solo; Thunderbird No. 7, Lt. Col. Derek Routt, operations officer; Thunderbird No. 10, Capt. Petrina Hanson, executive officer; Thunderbird No. 11, Maj. David Lemery, maintenance officer; Thunderbird No. 12, Capt. Jason McCree.

The Thunderbirds, originally known as the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit out of Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., was activated May 25, 1953.

The demonstration squadron is an Air Combat Command unit composed of eight pilots, including six demonstration pilots, four support officers, four civilians and about 110 enlisted people performing in more than 29 Air Force specialties.

The Thunderbirds' aerial demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The pilots perform about 40 maneuvers in a demonstration. The entire show, including ground and air, runs about one hour. The airshow season lasts from March to November, with the winter months used to train new members.

"We are humbled to have the opportunity to travel the U.S and Canada this year, representing the 700,000 Airmen in America's Air Force," Captain McCree said.

Ike Strike Group Deploys

USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER, At Sea (NNS) -- The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (IKE) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) deployed Jan. 2 for a six-month deployment in support of 5th and 6th Fleet operations.

IKE CSG is made up of Commander, CSG 8; the aircraft carrier IKE, homeported in Norfolk, Va.; Carrier Air Wing Seven (CVW) 7; Commander, Destroyer Squadron 28; the guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul (DDG 74), homeported in Norfolk; and the Mayport, Fla.-based ships, guided-missile cruiser USS Hue City (CG 66) and guided-missile destroyers USS Carney (DDG 64) and USS Farragut (DDG 99).

IKE CSG missions focus heavily on maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts that help establish conditions for regional stability.

"I'm extremely proud of the men and women of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group," said Rear Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of IKE CSG. "They've exceeded all expectations in a very short amount of turnaround time. We are ready to go over the horizon and support the troops on the ground in Afghanistan, support the nation's Maritime Strategy, and protect our nation's interests."

The deployment is part of an on-going rotation of forward-deployed forces to support maritime security operations in international waters around the globe.

IKE CSG consists of approximately 6,000 Sailors who, over the last four months, have successfully completed refresher training and certifications to ensure they operate effectively and safely together.

"IKE returned from a successful combat deployment last summer. We spent most of November (2009) at sea training during a challenging Composite Training Unit Exercise, and we spent December (2009) making sure the ship, our Sailors and our families are ready for this deployment. This is an amazing ship, but what's even more amazing are the young Americans who bring it to life," said Capt. Dee Mewbourne, IKE's commanding officer.

Blue Angels Heading to El Centro

The U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron - The Blue Angels - will arrive at Naval Air Facility El Centro Sunday, January 3, 2010. The Blue Angels F-18 Hornets are expected to arrive at the El Centro base at 4:00 p.m. Sunday , January 3, 2010.

While in the Imperial Valley, the teams winter home, they will complete at least 120 training flights during their 10-week stay.

The training will end with the Blue Angels first airshow of the 2010 season on March 13, 2010 at Naval Air Facility El Centro. The teams schedule continues through November when they wind up at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida the weekend of November 12 and 13, 2010.

Fat Albert, the Blue Angels C-130, is expected to arrive at NAF El Centro Sunday at about 5:30 p.m. with 15 maintenance personnel and equipment. The remainder of the maintenance and support personnel will arrive on a C-9 transport aircraft at an undetermined time.

Charleston Air Force Base: C-17s could take shortcut over the North Pole

In a copyrighted story published By SCHUYLER KROPF and the The (Charleston) Post and Courier, they are reporting that "pilots from the Charleston Air Force Base could soon begin flying over the North Pole to reach the Afghanistan war zone. And if the order comes, one flyer says it won't be that hard to do."
