Secret Transmission Detected From North Korea?

 

Blog Note: Do you need a schedule for North Korea SWBC broadcasts to monitor for possible North Korean numbers broadcasts? Ms Gayle has posted the latest A13 Summer schedule on her Shortwave Central blog at http://mt-shortwave.blogspot.com/2013/04/north-korea-a13-summer-schedules.html.

Thanks to Rene and Ary B from the UDXF newsgroup for passing the info about the piece below from the ConspiracyHQ website.

Ary said in his UDXF post, "Interesting as these transmissions stopped years ago. Are they really back? So far no-one else reported this while I know that several DXers are following the Korean broadcasts. If you are in the position to listen and really hear these transmissions, please report and record them to UDXF and Spooks !!!!!"

Ary may question if these transmissions are back, but I'm just highly skeptical about this alleged North Korean numbers station broadcast. No details of date, time or a frequency that radio hobbyists provide with these sort of intercepts. Only the name of Tim who lives in the Midwest as the person who is suppose to have heard this transmission. So what is this Tim hiding from? North Korean commandos or the rest of the radio hobby?

Given the attention right now by the radio community monitoring every DPRK radio broadcast and the fact that no one else in our hobby has heard or reported this transmission leaves me no choice but to question the validity of the entire report. A North Korean numbers transmission using the same  Spanish language numbers female as the Cuban 5-digit numbers broadcasts? Really. Really. Really!!!

Oh.and did I mention that the author mentioned The CONET Project archives? Wonde if that little 5-digit burst of Spanish numbers is a clip from that library. The whole thing sounds like a bad audio mix of various items we hear on the ute bands everyday.

I should also note that the numbers format heard on the audio link in this article does "NOT" match the known format of the old North Korean number station transmissions (the last known broadcast was in December 2000). So if Tim, or whatever your name is, who heard this alleged North Korean number station would like to pass along some info on this intercept and a copy of the audio clip of what he heard to me, I will be glad to give it a fair and honest hearing. I'm not holding my breath that I will ever hear from this radio ham who heard this blast from the past numbers transmission, but hey it is the 21st century and anything is possible (my tongue is in ye ole cheek).

New DoD EAM format noted yesterday!

One of the dean of military monitors, Jeff Haverlah, posted the following to the Milcom newsgroup yesterday morning.

There's something noteworthy on the HFGCS. The HFGCS system has been running many 30-character EAM strings since at least 0300z+/- and probably earlier, with all 30-character strings rebcst at the systems h+00/h+30 restoral windows. Currently OFFUTT is bcsting 30-character strings 4V75ZO; 4VDWVK; 4VY6Vv at 1100z; and, a single string (4V75ZO maybe) at 1130z. As with any string greater than 28-characters all strings are sent with the character count statement. Unusual.

Yes, this is very unusual Jeff. I have a HF receiver parked on a HF-GCS and it will be interesting to see if we hear any 6/20/28c EAMs, in addition to those 30c messages you monitored yesterday going forward from here.

US to Move Missile Defenses to Guam

According to a published BBC Asia report the U.S. is sending a missile shield to the Pacific island of Guam as North Korea threatens nuclear strikes. The Pentagon said the shield would be ready within weeks, adding to warships that were sent to the area earlier.

The North had named Guam among a list of possible targets for attack that included Hawaii and the US mainland. North Korea is not thought to have the technology to strike the US mainland with either a nuclear weapon or a ballistic missile, analysts say. But it is capable of targeting US military bases in the region with its mid-range missiles.

The US Department of Defense said on Wednesday it would deploy the ballistic Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System (Thaad) to Guam in the coming weeks. The Thaad system includes a truck-mounted launcher and interceptor missiles. The Pentagon said the deployment would "strengthen our regional defence posture against the North Korean regional ballistic missile threat".
The US floated plans to send a Thaad system to Guam in 2009, but never followed through.

US officials recently also announced that the USS John McCain, a destroyer capable of intercepting missiles, had been positioned off the Korean peninsula.

China mobilizing troops, jets near Korea - the McCain enters Korean waters

Arleigh Burke Destroyer the USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) has been ordered into Korean Waters

Bill Gertz is reporting on the Washington Free Beacon website that "China has placed military forces on heightened alert in the northeastern part of the country as tensions mount on the Korean peninsula following recent threats by Pyongyang to attack, U.S. officials said."

"Reports from the region reveal the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) recently increased its military posture in response to the heightened tensions, specifically North Korea’s declaration of a “state of war” and threats to conduct missile attacks against the United States and South Korea."

"According to the officials, the PLA has stepped up military mobilization in the border region with North Korea since mid-March, including troop movements and warplane activity."

"China’s navy also conducted live-firing naval drills by warships in the Yellow Sea that were set to end Monday near the Korean peninsula, in apparent support of North Korea, which was angered by ongoing U.S.-South Korean military drills that are set to continue throughout April."

"North Korea, meanwhile, is mobilizing missile forces, including road-mobile short- and medium-range missiles, according to officials familiar with satellite imagery of missile bases."

Meanwhile, other press reports indicate that the U.S. Navy is shifting a guided-missile destroyer in the Pacific to waters off the Korean peninsula in the wake of ongoing rhetoric from North Korea, U.S. defense officials said.

The USS McCain is capable of intercepting and destroying a missile, should North Korea decide to fire one off, the officials said.

Who will blink first?

Reuters is reporting that the United States has sent F-22 stealth fighter jets to South Korea on Sunday to join military drills aimed at underscoring the U.S. commitment to defend Seoul in the face of an intensifying campaign of threats from North Korea.

The advanced, radar-evading F-22 Raptors were deployed to Osan Air Base, the main U.S. Air Force base in South Korea, from Japan to support ongoing bilateral exercises, the U.S. military command in South Korea said in a statement that urged North Korea to restrain itself.

North Korea Rockets 'Ready To Hit US Bases'

Kim Jong-Un reportedly tells generals to prepare for an attack on US bases after a show of force by American bombers.
The country's KCNA news agency said Kim Jong-Un had signed off on the order to train sights on American bases in South Korea and the Pacific after a midnight meeting with top generals.
The move was followed by reports of increased activity at North Korea's mid to long-range missile sites, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

It comes after two American B-2 stealth bombers flew over South Korea in a show of force to Pyongyang, following an escalation of rhetoric from the North's young leader. Both China and Russia have appealed for calm.

The two nuclear-capable B-2 planes flew a 13,000-mile round trip from an air base in Missouri, dropping a dummy bomb on a target range in the South.

The planes were taking part in a joint South Korea-US military exercise that has inflamed tensions with Pyongyang, which earlier this month threatened to unleash an "all-out war" backed by nuclear weapons.

"This .... demonstrates the United States' ability to conduct long range, precision strikes quickly and at will," the US military said in a statement.

"The B-2 bomber is an important element of America's enduring and robust extended deterrence capability in the Asia-Pacific region."

KCNA reported that Mr Kim had "judged the time has come to settle accounts with the US imperialists in view of the prevailing situation".

The agency said: "He finally signed the plan on technical preparations of strategic rockets of the KPA, ordering them to be on standby for fire so that they may strike any time the US mainland, its military bases in the operational theatres in the Pacific, including Hawaii and Guam, and those in South Korea."

Following their leader's call to arms, thousands of North Koreans turned out for a mass rally in the main square in the capital.

Chanting "Death to the US imperialists" and "Sweep away the US aggressors," soldiers and students marched through Kim Il-Sung Square during the 90-minute rally.

The US has denied its military exercise was provocative but said it was "committed to a pathway to peace" and "prepared to deal with any eventuality" in the region.

Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the B-2 bombers were a message intended more for allies than Pyongyang.

Blue and TBirds Grounded Due to Sequestration

With $85 billion in automatic cuts that took effect on Friday, millions of fans across the country will likely miss out on the precision flying team's thrilling shows this year.

Blue Angels shows scheduled in more than two dozen cities between April and September are expected to be canceled as part of the cuts, said the team's spokeswoman, Lieutenant Katie Kelly. Some shows featuring the Blue Angels already have been called off in the face of budget uncertainties.

Air shows scheduled for May at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina, and for June in Indianapolis, already have been canceled, organizers and U.S. Air Force officials announced in recent weeks.

The Air Force said its Thunderbirds exhibition flying team is expected to be grounded if the so-called sequestration cuts happen.

TACSAT-4 Dowlink Active

Our friendly Tacsat 4 (2011-052A) DoD Milsat is on an ascending pass towards apogee right now and located 11,900 km in altitude just south of Puerto Rico. It's 253.000 MHz downiink is active with AM ATC traffic picked off by its uplink. The 253.000 MHz downlink is a flame thrower here in Btown right now. None of the other known UHF downlinks are currently active.

Russian Bear Bombers Over Guam

Noted military reporter Bill Gertz on the Washington Free Beacon website is reporting that two Russian nuclear-armed bombers circled the western Pacific island of Guam this week in the latest sign of Moscow’s growing strategic assertiveness toward the United States.

The Russian Tu-95 Bear-H strategic bombers were equipped with nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and were followed by U.S. jets as they circumnavigated Guam on Feb. 12 local time—hours before President Barack Obama’s state of the union address.

Air Force Capt. Kim Bender, a spokeswoman for the Pacific Air Force in Hawaii, confirmed the incident to the Washington Free Beacon and said Air Force F-15 jets based on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, “scrambled and responded to the aircraft.”

“The Tu-95s were intercepted and left the area in a northbound direction. No further actions occurred,” she said. Bender said no other details would be released “for operational security reasons.”

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Whenever the Pentagon wants to call one of its nuclear subs in the Pacific, the call goes through the quiet Navy professionals whose E-6B Mercury communication aircraft fly out of their unobtrusive alert facility on Travis’ south side.

Like fishermen, the aircrew of Travis’ VQ-3 detachment spends long hours out over the Pacific, catching messages with a five-mile trailing antenna that will then be sent to the subs cruising safely and silently under water within 1,000 miles of the aircraft.

“We are one big relay platform,” said VQ-3 Detachment Officer in Charge Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jason Anstead.

The unit’s unofficial name, TACAMO, stands for Take Charge and Move Out. It was born in July 1963 when the director of naval communications for the chief of naval operations used those words to start work on coming up with a better way to communicate with the Navy’s nuclear submarines.
This system had to be capable of surviving any hostile military action, something ground-based communications sites were incapable of doing, according to Anstead.

The result was the creation of Strategic Communications Wing 1, which is headquartered at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla., and oversees three fleet air reconnaissance squadrons. One of those, VQ-3, has the detachment, which is stationed on the south side of Travis Air Force Base’s runway. It’s sister unit, VQ-4, has a detachment that is stationed on the East Coast at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
