SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (CSG) and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, will arrive in San Diego from a six-month scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Areas of Responsibility (AOR) March 19.
"I could not be more proud of the Sailors and officers in my squadron and the rest of the strike group," said Cmdr. Kenneth Strong, Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 77 commanding officer. "I am humbled to be a member of such a dedicated team. Obviously we are all happy to be coming home to our families and friends, and are pleased at having done our duty so well."
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) left its homeport of Everett, Wash., Sept. 7 and departed San Diego Sept. 11.
Personnel and aircraft from CVW 2, including San Diego-based Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30, Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 12 and HSM 77 arrive with Abraham Lincoln, after which Abraham Lincoln will continue to her homeport of Everett, Wash.
The Abraham Lincoln CSG and embarked air wing successfully flew more than 8,300 sorties and completed more than 23,500 flying hours, of which more than 3,600 sorties and almost 11,000 hours were flown in support of U.S. and coalition ground forces supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
In addition to supporting its primary missions throughout the deployment, Abraham Lincoln CSG completed the following:
• Conducted exercises with coalition countries and other nations, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman.
• USS Cape St. George (CG 71) , USS Sterett (DDG 104), USS Halsey (DDG 97), USS Shoup (DDG 86) and USS Momsen (DDG 92) assisted mariners in distress and provided humanitarian assistance to more than 10 vessels.
• Visited ports in Malaysia, Bahrain, UAE, Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Seychelles, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Oman, Maldives, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.
• Conducted community relations and community service projects in Malaysia, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Seychelles, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia and Maldives.
• Hosted the U.S. secretary of defense, chief of naval operations and more than 30 international dignitaries and military officials.
Abraham Lincoln was recognized during deployment as the best Pacific-based carrier for 2010, earning the prestigious Battle "E" award, as well as 13 individual departmental Battle "E" awards. Additionally, HSM 77 was recognized as a top West Coast helicopter squadron, earning their own Battle "E" award.
Abraham Lincoln CSG, led by Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, is comprised of CVW 2, Destroyer Squadron 9, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George, guided-missile destroyers USS Momsen, USS Sterett, USS Halsey and USS Shoup. The air wing squadrons of CVW 2 include the "Bounty Hunters" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 2, the "Vigilantes" of VFA 151, the "Kestrels" of VFA 137, the "Blue Blasters" of VFA 34, the "Sun Kings" of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 116, the "Lancers" of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 131, the "Providers" of VRC 30, the "Golden Falcons" of HSC 12 and the "Saberhawks" of HSM 77.
Abraham Lincoln CSG helps provide deterrence, promote peace and security, preserve freedom of the sea and humanitarian/disaster response within 3rd Fleet's 50-million square mile AOR in the Eastern Pacific, as well as supporting the Navy's Maritime Strategy when forward deployed.

Now as we get started into the air show season, I want to remind my readers on this blog that your air show reports are critical to keeping our annual MT Air Show Guide up-to-date. We would appreciate if you use our guide that you send along your air show frequency reports to the email address in the masthead above. Even if the freqs are on our list, we use all the frequencies heard at a show to confirm and verify the frequency information we provide in our guide.
If you hear it, we can use it!

Plan Improves Navy, Marine Corps Air Capabilities

WASHINGTON - Navy and Marine Corps leaders today signed an agreement by which the Corps will join the Navy in buying the F-35 joint strike fighter variant designed for aircraft carriers, service leaders announced today.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, and Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James F. Amos signed a memorandum of agreement today on the purchase of F/A-18E/F and F-35B/C fighter jets they say will improve air capabilities for both services.
Under the agreement, the two services will buy 680 F-35s. The Navy will buy 260 of the F-35C carrier variant, and the Marine Corps will buy 80 of the F-35Cs, along with 340 of the F-35Bs, a short-take off, vertical-landing variant. The Corps will assign five of its air squadrons to flying the F-35Cs in the Navy's carrier air wing, the agreement says.
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced in January that he was placing the F-35B on the equivalent of two years probation due to testing problems with the STOVL aircraft.
Today's agreement demonstrates the commitment of Gates, Mabus and Roughead to the purchase of the F-35B, Thomas E. Laux, the Navy's deputy assistant secretary for air programs, said during a press briefing. "These quantities match the fiscal 2012 budget request," he said.
The F-35Cs will be assigned to the Navy's aircraft carriers, while the "B" variants are assigned to L-class ships, Laux said. "Our priority is to do testing of the F-35Cs on the carrier," he said. "We will learn a lot about the F-35Bs on the L ships" to determine if the STOVLs may be used on carriers.
The agreement reflects the "enduring partnership" of Navy and Marine Corps aviation, Laux said. Training for the aircraft will be "completely integrated," and there will be only one pipeline, he said.
The combination of F-35B and C variants, along with the F-18s, will improve the services' advance air capabilities, service officials said.
"Together, the Navy and Marine Corps are stronger than they are alone," Laux said. "Together, we are more formidable than we are apart."

Seventh Fleet Repositions Ships after Contamination Detected
USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC 19) - At Sea (NNS) -- The U.S. 7th Fleet has temporarily repositioned its ships and aircraft away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant after detecting low level contamination in the air and on its aircraft operating in the area. The source of this airborne radioactivity is a radioactive plume released from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant.
For perspective, the maximum potential radiation dose received by any ship's force personnel aboard the ship when it passed through the area was less than the radiation exposure received from about one month of exposure to natural background radiation from sources such as rocks, soil, and the sun.
The ship was operating at sea about 100 miles northeast of the power plant at the time.
Using sensitive instruments, precautionary measurements of three helicopter aircrews returning to USS Ronald Reagan after conducting disaster relief missions near Sendai identified low levels of radioactivity on 17 air crew members. The low level radioactivity was easily removed from affected personnel by washing with soap and water. They were subsequently surveyed, and no further contamination was detected.
As a precautionary measure, USS Ronald Reagan and other U.S. 7th Fleet ships conducting disaster response operations in the area have moved out of the downwind direction from the site to assess the situation and determine what appropriate mitigating actions are necessary.
We remain committed to our mission of providing assistance to the people of Japan.

USS John S. McCain Gets Underway for Search and Rescue

PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) departed from Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka on March 12, to provide humanitarian assistance in support of earthquake and tsunami relief operations in Japan as directed.
"We had just pulled into Yokosuka when I got the word to head back out and proceed north. We're now part of the search and rescue operations taking place off of the coast of Japan," said Cmdr. Matt Lehman, commanding officer of John S. McCain.
"As a member of Destroyer Squadron 15 and the George Washington Carrier Strike Group, we'll be working side-by-side with USS Ronald Reagan and other Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) ships, helping with any humanitarian operations that come up," he added.
McCain's mission involves using rigid-hull inflatable boats to search for anything adrift in the water and providing support for any helicopter operations by acting as a refueling station; an operation also known as "lily padding."
"I'm really proud of my guys," said Lehman. "We got the call late at night, right when we returned from an exercise and here we are again doing our thing. It's a real testament to the all the Sailors in the U.S. Navy that we can get underway in such a short period. I'm proud to be part of this operation and I know we'll do the best we can do and help everyone we can."
McCain along with the destroyers USS McCampbell (DDG 85) and USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) will assist Japanese authorities off the Miyagi Prefecture of Japan to provide at-sea search and rescue recovery operations.

SOUTH CHINA SEA (NNS) -- Seventh Fleet command flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) Sailors and embarked 7th Fleet staff members are preparing for humanitarian aid and disaster relief support operations while sailing toward the eastern coast of mainland Japan March 13.
Blue Ridge Sailors loaded a humanitarian aid/disaster relief (HADR) kit while moored in Singapore Friday night and set sail Saturday morning. Shortly after departing Singapore, the ship completed replenishment-at-sea operations with USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204), receiving fuel and additional supplies.
"I'm amazed at the things we've achieved in such a short time," said Master Chief Information Systems Technician Lonnie Gillilan, who led the recent on-load preparations aboard Blue Ridge. "We've all been pulling together, no complaining. I'm very impressed."
Sailors worked past midnight Friday, loading equipment to allow Blue Ridge to provide fresh water and supplies during HADR support operations.
"It's giving me a sense of accomplishment to know that the work we're doing could help people out," said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Patrick Ramos, who helped push crates of supplies from the flight deck.
Boatswain's Mate 1st Class Jonathan Howton, a leading petty officer aboard Blue Ridge, has experience conducting HADR support operations in conditions similar to those location in Japan affected by the recent tsunami.
"I was aboard USS Iwo Jima when we provided aid to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina," said Howton. "In a disaster situation you have to prepare for the unknown. You never know what's going to happen."
USS Blue Ridge is uniquely equipped and able to perform amphibious command and control operations and is ready to support assigned HADR relief efforts.

Pentagon Official Discusses Libya No-Fly Zone

WASHINGTON - Amid reports from Libya that indicate Moammar Gadhafi's troops are gaining the upper hand over the opposition, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell spoke during an MSNBC interview today about the situation in Libya and possible responses.
Morrell, who has just returned from accompanying Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to NATO for discussions on the situation in North Africa, said NATO defense ministers agreed "to continue planning for any and all military options, including a no-fly zone."
What happens with the no-fly zone will depend on a political decision that has not been made yet, Morrell said.
"However, as we saw over the weekend, now the Arab League is calling for it," he added. "So that will undoubtedly factor into the decision-making of the president and other European leaders as they go forward."
Three American ships remain off the Libyan coast: the USS Kearsarge, the USS Ponce and the USS Barry. Other NATO nations also have positioned ships in the Mediterranean.
"But remember," Morrell said, "this is to monitor the arms embargo that the U.N. put in place, as well as to provide humanitarian assistance if needed."
If the decision is made to establish a no-fly zone, the U.S. military can make it work, Morrell said.
"I don't think this has ever been a question of can we do this," he said. "I mean, this is the United States military. Even though we have significant commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world, Secretary Gates has made it abundantly clear we can do this."
NATO allies would help, Morrell noted. "It's important that we not do it alone," he said. "But this is not a question of 'can.' It's a question of whether we should. And that's a decision that the president will make at some point."
Meanwhile, two more U.S. military flights flew Egyptian civilians home from Tunisia over the weekend, Pentagon spokesman Marine Corps Col. Dave Lapan said today.
A March 12 flight out of Djerba airlifted 60 Egyptians back to Cairo, and a flight yesterday had 79 passengers. The Egyptians escaped fighting inside Libya and were stranded in Tunisia.
To date, 13 such flights have airlifted 982 passengers, Lapan said. The C-130 flights began March 5, and there are none scheduled today, he added.

Thousands Attend El Centro Air Show

EL CENTRO, Calif. (NNS) -- Approximately 45,000 spectators attended the Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro Air Show in El Centro, Calif., March 12.
The show featured more than 20 events, multiple military and civilian aerial demonstrations, as well as vintage aircraft on static display.
"It's an opportunity to give back to the community for all the support the community gives us throughout the year," said Cmdr. Erik Franzen, NAF El Centro executive officer. "It's kicking off the air show season."
One of the highlights during the air show was the Blue Angels, the Navy's Flight Demonstration Squadron.
"NAF El Centro is the winter home to the Blue Angels," said Franzen. "They do all of their practicing here in preparation for their upcoming show schedule. Their first show is here at NAF El Centro every year."
"I saw the Blue Angels in 1964, and they haven't changed," said Ed Chadek, a spectator at the air show. "They are just awesome; it was a great show."
A member of the "Black Daggers", the United States Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, displayed the American flag for the national anthem during a jump demonstration that opened the show.
"We bridge the gap between the American public and the military, to let them know what their special operations or armed forces are capable of," said Staff Sgt. Noah Watts, Black Daggers demonstrator and assistant team leader. "It is a great response. We walk around, everyone is cheering, they want to come up and shake your hand. Little kids want to give us high fives. It's a really great opportunity for us to give back to the supportive community."
The Black Daggers team members are comprised entirely of volunteers from the Army special operations community.
The owners and operators of many of the vintage and current aircraft were on hand to share their knowledge and their passion for aviation.
"You have such an enthusiastic crowd out here and great people," said John Collver, an air show pilot. "It is just a joy to fly for them and share my passion."
The crowd cheered and applauded as the pilots performed aerobatics and races during the show. The air show also featured pyrotechnics demonstration put on by Explosive Ordinance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 11 detachments from Fallon, Nev., and San Diego.
"I loved it, just like old times," said Alex Hooper, a spectator at the air show. "My father used to bring me out here as a little boy, and I thought I would give the experience to my son."
This year's air show was both a celebration of the "Centennial of Naval Aviation" and the relationship between NAF El Centro and the local community.
"I saw a wonderful interface between the military and the local community, and that is indeed a rarity," said William G. Vasilovich, official announcer for air show. "That's really a tribute to the efforts that the folks here at NAF El Centro make."
45th Space Wing officials launch satellite atop Delta IV

CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. (AFNS) -- Members from the 45th Space Wing successfully launched a United Launch Alliance-built Delta IV Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle here March 13 carrying a classified National Reconnaissance Office satellite.
"The outstanding ULA, NRO and Air Force partnership made yet another successful mission," said Lt. Col. William Heuck, the 5th Space Launch Squadron commander.
This is the fifth in a series of six launches scheduled during the NRO 50th anniversary year in 2011.
"I am extremely proud of the entire government and contractor team who supported this launch," said Col. Alan Davis, the director of the Office of Space Launch in the National Reconnaissance Office. We have had an amazing five successful launches in the past 12 months, two in 2010 and three this year. I am looking forward to the launch of NROL-34 in April, which will conclude our most aggressive launch schedule in over two decades.
The Delta IV is one of two EELV's used by the Air Force. The wing launched the other EELV, an Atlas V, March 5.
"This mission helps ensure that crucial NRO resources will continue to strengthen our national defense," said Col James Ross, the 45th Space Wing vice commander. "The teamwork used to make this launch a success is one example of how the 45th (Space Wing) delivers assured space launch, range and combat capabilities for the nation."

"A new U.S. spy satellite soared into the sunset sky above Florida today (March 11) on a clandestine mission to preserve national security.
"The satellite launched into space atop an unmanned Delta 4 rocket that lifted off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 6:38 p.m. EST (2338 GMT). High-altitude winds above the Air Force station's Launch Complex 37 delayed the satellite's launch by nearly a half hour, but cleared in time for a dazzling twilight blastoff.
"Rocket launch provider United Launch Alliance orchestrated the satellite's trip to orbit for the National Reconnaissance Office. The Chantilly, Va.-based NRO is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the country's network of intelligence-gathering spy satellites."
"The new satellite is part of the military's national defense program. Due to the classified nature of the mission, which is formally known as NROL-27, very few additional details about the launch or the satellite's purpose are publicly released. The mission went into a media blackout shortly after its successful liftoff."

Navy Units Prepare to Support Tsunami-Damaged Areas
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (NNS) -- U.S. Pacific Fleet ships in the Western Pacific were converging on Japan to be in the best position to help those in areas damaged by the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
They include the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), which departed Southern California waters on March 5 for a regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific and U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Reagan is the flagship of the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, which includes USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and USS Preble (DDG 88). All three ships were headed to Honshu's east coast. It is too early to say what they will be tasked with once they arrive.
USS Essex (LHD 2), also forward deployed to Sasebo, had just arrived in Malaysia, but is getting ready to return to Japan to rendezvous with USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) and USS Germantown (LSD 42) off Tokyo to prepare for any humanitarian assistance/disaster relief duties.
USS Tortuga (LSD 46), a dock landing ship that carries helicopters and landing craft to support amphibious operations, left its forward deployed port of Sasebo in Southern Japan last evening to embark MH-53 heavy lift helicopters.
USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19), the U.S. Seventh Fleet command ship, had arrived in Singapore yesterday for a port visit, but immediately changed its focus to loading humanitarian assistance/disaster relief equipment and preparing to return to Japan to provide support as directed.
"We obviously have huge sympathy for the people of Japan, and we are prepared to help them in any way we possibly can," Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a statement. "It's obviously a very sophisticated country, but this is a huge disaster and we will do all, anything we are asked to do to help out."

Abraham Lincoln Arrives at Pearl Harbor
The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) arrives in Pearl Harbor for a port visit. The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is returning to homeport in Everett, Wash., after a six-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts. Lincoln is currently en route to her homeport of Everett, Wash., following a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility supporting operations in 7th and 5th Fleets.
Lincoln serves as the flagship of the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group (CSG), which worked alongside coalition partners in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
During the deployment, Abraham Lincoln CSG conducted exercises with coalition countries and other nations, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman; made port visits and conducted community relations and community service projects in Malaysia, Bahrain, UAE, Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Seychelles, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Oman, Maldives, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia.
The carrier strike group also hosted U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead and more than 30 international dignitaries and military officials.
The strike group and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2 successfully flew more than 8,300 sorties and completed more than 23,500 flying hours, of which, more than 3,600 sorties and almost 11,000 hours were flown in support of U.S. and coalition ground forces.
Abraham Lincoln CSG played a key part of supporting the Navy's Maritime Strategy, which calls for credible combat power to be continuously postured to protect America's vital interests, assuring friends and allies of the United States' continued commitment to regional security and to deter and dissuade potential adversaries.
Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is comprised of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9, Carrier Air Wing 2, flagship Abraham Lincoln, guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG 71), and guided-missile destroyers USS Momsen (DDG 92), USS Sterett (DDG 104), USS Halsey (DDG 97) and USS Shoup (DDG 86).
Space team improves GPS capability for warfighters

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AFNS) -- Joint force warfighters around the globe will soon be able to assess real-time and future GPS accuracy, both where they are and where they're going, with a new capability developed by the 2nd Space Operations Squadron's Global Positioning System User Operations team here.
The new capability uses the Google Earth software application to display data supplied by the GPS Operations Center for warfighters on the ground in places like Afghanistan.
Chaz Bowman, the GPSOC program manager, calls it an innovation that could be limitless for users once it is deployed.
It jumps way beyond the situational awareness tools warfighters are currently using, said Capt. Bryony Veater, the 2nd SOPS weapons and tactics flight commander.
"Right now, users must view slides and other similar forms of displays to extrapolate the scenario they are looking for, whereas this tool lays everything on one viewable screen, " Captain Veater said. "It even displays the terrain warfighters will need to traverse during their operation."
The new capability also creates a one-stop shop for ground-force mission planners who are looking for different forms of GPS core data.
"Until now, users would have to visit up to five or six different (secure) websites to obtain the GPS data they need," Mr. Bowman said. "Once we launch this capability, those same users will follow a link we send them once, and from then on, they'll be able to see what they need from GPS in one viewing."
Both Captain Veater and Mr. Bowman work as part of the GPS user operations team, which can be thought of as a 911 call center for military GPS user emergencies. The GPSOC provides vital data to GPS users in real time and though it was designed to primarily support military user, staff members also answer questions for civilians and Federal Aviation Administration officials.
"We are user support," Captain Veater said. "We're focused on what the user needs to get the job done. Our only job is to make sure the user has what they need to operate with and through GPS."
Jordan Scott, a former Army captain and GPSOC contractor, conceived the idea for the new capability after returning from a deployment in Afghanistan this past summer. Once he relayed the concept, the GPSOC team went about innovating and modifying software to make it compatible with Google Earth software. They began testing in preparation for product launch roughly three weeks ago, and Mr. Bowman said he believes the capability could be operational in a few weeks.
This innovation is so new that team members haven't even thought of a name for it, yet 2nd SOPS leaders say it holds clear and obvious advantages over previous situational forms of information.
"This new tool gives 2nd SOPS unprecedented situational awareness when assisting users in theater," said Lt. Col. Mike Manor, the 2nd SOPS director of operations. "The particular capability provides our team with a real time visual of the terrain and the GPS accuracy a unit is experiencing when they call for GPS- related assistance. The Google Earth picture is definitely worth a thousand words, and this tool basically eliminates the guess work when trying to understand the current situation our users are experiencing."

Key Army radio system has a 72 percent failure rate

The Defense Department's top weapons tester told lawmakers at a hearing Wednesday that a key component of the Army's battlefield network now in development failed 72 percent of the time in tests last year. The network is the centerpiece of the service's modernization strategy, according to testimony by Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli at the same hearing.
The Ground Mobile Radio version of the Joint Tactical Radio System worked so poorly in secure voice mode that the combat unit conducting the tests last year at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico had to rely on runners for communications, something "the Army has not done since World War II," J. Michael Gilmore, Defense's director of operational test and evaluation, said at a hearing of the Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces of the House Armed Services Committee.
The Army plans to install the Boeing-developed Ground Mobile Radio in its tactical vehicles, as well as use it to transmit broadband data across the battlefield along with voice communications, Chiarelli said. But the Army needs to demonstrate it can work in a 20- to 30-node network in tests at White Sands this summer, Gilmore said.

Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group Enters 7th Fleet AOR

Lee/Released) PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group arrived in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), March 9.
While in the 7th Fleet, the carrier strike group (CSG) will conduct exercises and port visits to enhance maritime partnerships and promote peace and stability in the region.
"We continue to seek opportunities to train and build partnerships with our allies," said Rear Adm. Robert Girrier, commander, Carrier Strike Group 7. "We are looking forward to every opportunity to enhance our commitment to the region."
The U.S. 7th Fleet AOR spans 48 million square miles, from the International Date Line to the Western Indian Ocean.
The strike group will participate in Foal Eagle, an annual field-training exercise designed designed to enhance combat readiness of Republic of Korea and U.S. supporting forces through combined training. The exercise highlights the longstanding military partnership and enduring friendship between the United States and Republic of Korea.
The CSG is comprised of USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), guided-missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG 62) and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 7, which includes USS Preble (DDG 88).
The embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14 on board Ronald Regan includes Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 154, (VFA) 147, (VFA) 146; Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 323; Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 113; Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 139; Carrier Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30, and Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 4.
Ronald Reagan departed from its homeport in San Diego Feb. 2, for a training exercise and its deployment to the 7th Fleet and U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Ronald Regan's last deployment to 7th Fleet was in 2009.
E10 Mossad HF Numbers Stations - SK!
Our good friend Ary Boender is reporting on the UDXF newsgroup that after about 45 years, the well known Israeli Mossad numbers (Enigma E10) transmissions have disappeared from the HF spectrum. The stations have been silent since March 1st. Callsigns include YHF, CIO, VLB, etc.
According to the March 2011 E2K newsletter the night of Feb 28-Mar 1 was the last time a E10 transmission was logged. Despite intensive monitoring of all the current and previous known frequencies since, nothing has been heard.
So where has this activity moved to? Satellite? Landlines? Has the E10 transmissions gone digital? Is the E2K editorial staff theory that the extra traffic that has been observed over in Europe on the HEW ALE network related? There just is no way to know at this time.

According to the March 2011 E2K newsletter the night of Feb 28-Mar 1 was the last time a E10 transmission was logged. Despite intensive monitoring of all the current and previous known frequencies since, nothing has been heard.
So where has this activity moved to? Satellite? Landlines? Has the E10 transmissions gone digital? Is the E2K editorial staff theory that the extra traffic that has been observed over in Europe on the HEW ALE network related? There just is no way to know at this time.

First geosynchronous satellite arrives in Florida for May launch
LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AFNS) -- Officials with the Air Force's Space Based Infrared Systems program completed a program milestone recently, successfully delivering the first geosynchronous satellite, known as GEO-1, to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla.
The delivery of GEO-1 sets the path for final checkout of the space vehicle before launch.
The satellite will be processed in the Defense Satellite Communications System Processing Facility. Work began March 4, when the satellite was hoisted from the shipping container and positioned into the high bay.
Final launch preparation activities include a launch-base confidence test to verify satellite integrity after shipment, an intersegment test to verify communication compatibility from the satellite to the on-orbit operations center and final battery reconditioning for launch. Following these activities, the satellite will be fueled and prepared for integrated processing with the Atlas V booster.
"The SBIRS team has met or exceeded all significant program objectives leading to this important milestone, and there is great enthusiasm and excitement across our entire workforce," said Col. Roger Teague, the director of the Infrared Space Systems Directorate's Space and Missile Systems Center at Los Angeles Air Force Base. "We are positioned well to successfully launch the first SBIRS satellite."
The GEO-1 satellite is scheduled for launch from Cape Canaveral AFS in early May.
The satellite was transported from the Lockheed Martin satellite integration facility in Sunnyvale, Calif., via a C-5 Galaxy.
The C-5 crew from the 22nd Airlift Squadron at Travis AFB, Calif., ensured GEO-1 was transported safely and according to the time-sensitive schedule. Security support was provided by the California Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing.
"Safe transport of the SBIRS satellite was paramount and the total force government and contractor team worked tirelessly to ensure mission success," Colonel Teague said.
The SBIRS program is designed to replace the Defense Support Program satellite constellation. The program is designed to provide significantly enhanced capabilities to support missile warning, missile defense, battlespace awareness and technical intelligence missions.
Engineers expect the state-of-the-art SBIRS sensors to provide enhanced operational capability for the warfighter and technical community.

"The spokesperson said early post-flight analysis of the first X-37B vehicle indicates it could have stayed in space beyond the craft's 270-day design life. That knowledge could compel managers to keep OTV 2 in orbit longer."
"The covert space plane blasted off inside the Atlas rocket's pointy 17-foot [5.2-m] diameter nose cone at 5:46 p.m. EST (2246 GMT). The 20-story rocket let out a deep rumble as it streaked away from Florida's Space Coast into a clear blue sky, disappearing from view about four minutes into flight.
"The Atlas first stage's Russian main engine accelerated the rocket to the edge of space in four-and-a-half minutes, before turning off and giving way to a hydrogen-fueled RL10 engine on the rocket's Centaur upper stage.
"The military stopped releasing real-time updates on the mission when the upper stage engine shut down, but the Air Force and United Launch Alliance, the Atlas rocket's builder and operator, announced the flight was a success."
"Resembling a miniature space shuttle orbiter, the 29-foot [8.8-m]-long stubby-winged ship is hauling classified cargo inside a payload bay no bigger than the bed of a pickup truck. After launch, the space plane is programmed to open its clamshell-like cargo bay doors and deploy a solar panel to charge its batteries.
"The X-37's cost and specific mission are top secret, but military officials proudly boast of the space plane's ability to return experiments from space."
"With a powerful main engine, a renewable energy source and electromechanical control surfaces, the 11,000-pound [5,000-kg] spacecraft can stay in orbit much longer than NASA's space shuttle orbiters. But its cargo capacity is just a fraction of the shuttle's lift ability, limiting the X-37's potential use in launching or retrieving satellites.
"But the X-37B could still test spy satellite technology and do other research. And its engine has enough thrust and fuel to chase down other satellites in orbit, yielding some analysts to predict the space plane could rendezvous with another spacecraft and take pictures of it.

USS Ronald Reagan Strike Group Deploys

PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and its embarked air wing, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14, completed their pre-deployment training March 5, and departed the Southern California area of operations for its regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific and Central Command areas of responsibility.
"We have successfully completed all of our final qualifications," said Capt. Thom Burke, USS Ronald Reagan commanding officer. "The ship and air wing have been training hard and are ready for any tasking that we might receive in the upcoming months."
Embarked aboard Ronald Reagan with CVW 14 are the "Black Knights" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 154, the "Argonauts" of VFA-147, the "Blue Diamonds" of VFA-146, the "Death Rattlers" of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 323, the "Black Eagles" of Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 113, the "Cougars" of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron (VAQ) 139, the "Providers" of Carrier Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30 and the "Black Knights" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 4.

USAF AWACS Over Libya?

Media reports from NATO sources indicate that AWACS surveillance flights over Libya may be extended from 10 to 24 hours a day and that the US Air Force AWACS from the 552ACW would be capable of handling this mission.
I have pulled from my db frequencies that have had AWACS activity in the past by the French AF, UK RAF and NATO AWACS aircraft. I do not have any confirmed voicetell frequencies used by any USAF AWACS overseas in the past in my database.
The frequencies below have not been observed in use during this current situation and any intercept reports regarding any military service AWACS missions over Libya are certainly appreciated. You can email me at the email address in the masthead.
